The fact that they want the wolves to be afraid of humans is so fascinating! Conservation work is always so interesting and wonderful
@BeesSides3 ай бұрын
that's the general rule with all animals that go back into the wild after rehabilitation or programmes like this. it's important that the wildlife learns independence from humans and just avoids people for mutual safety.

Something similar is done with bears; it’s called “hazing”. The goal is to keep them away from population centres so there’s no conflict between them and people.
@jannetteberends87302 ай бұрын
I’m from the Netherlands, and the wolf is returning to our country. But there is the problem that they aren’t afraid of people. This summer there was a wolf close to where I live. He bit a child, nothing serious, but it’s because the wolf wasn’t afraid of people. Now they are thinking of methods to make them fear people again. It’s a problem in other areas as well.

I watched a bit more of the stream, and a fun fact about Silas jumping on the fence at 9:24 . Silas actually learned this trick from another wolf, who learnt it from another older wolf. Now Silas never met that older wolf, but due to the trick behavior being passed down still learnt it. Super cool to learn, and have an evident example of how wolves can pass behaviors down generations! Ps. I feel like I didn't do the best job at explaining this so it's well worth giving the stream a watch if your interested

I remember when I was a kid there was a wolf conservation not far from my house where my parents and me went once. We "adopted" an older wolf who had a huge chunk missing out of his one ear he lost in a fight with another one, but he seemed very intelligent compared to the other wolves so we "adopted" him, meaning we spent $100 to have our name next to his. Only saw him once but I've always wanted to go back to see all of the other wolves as I'm pretty sure he died a couple of years ago. I always love seeing wolf conservation videos though, reminds me of that core memory and that wolf, I think his name was Doug not sure though.

Can you talk about any issues with genetic variation of population that are rebuilt from such small numbers? For the red wolves, it seems like there were 8 wild ones and the rebuilt a population that you'd have big issues with in breeding and low gene pool variance. I'm just curious.
