I think Guilliman should be given more credit. For one, his reservations about psykers isn’t unwarranted or exaggerated. A alpha class, or alpha+ class psykers could doom a planet in an afternoon. I think he privately knows full well, big E was there. But there is something important about sending a message to your subordinates about respect. The preacher lost all my respect when he ordered(hinted at) the sister to steal the girl out of custody. Even tho it ultimately turned out right, that’s treason. And exactly the excesses of zealotry the emperor warned of in “the last church”. In the third book, Guilliman totally gambled that big E would show up and save his neck. He knew he was going to lose to mortarion. His plan overall made no sense. He steps out on the field and calls mortarion out. The was only 1 logical conclusion and that was Guilliman getting a dose of God Blight. Guilliman had no guarantee big E would show. But he did it anyway. I’d say that’s a lot of faith on Guillimans part. 🤷🏻♂️

Guilliman again getting a taste of what the Emperor had to deal with wholesale with Lorgar and the Word Bearers. But in this case it was a battle that stood at a knife's edge with that girl psyker being either damnation or salvation. But simultaneously the fight to wrest humanity's need to pray and blame any sort of unknowing or unseeable being was probably always an impossible one. Deeds and Words aren't enough, and the Inquisition isn't all powerful either if they weren't also believers in the Emperor's divinity or at least knew from their manipulative places of power as agents of the Imperium that faith in Big E was good as a control tool. And you honestly can't look at the literal Miracles, like Guilliman and El'Johnson's resurrections as anything more than the will of an actual godlike being. Who extends his power across vast oceans of stars as if he were sending a simple vox message. At this point it almost doesn't matter what the Emperor is. But I do understand Robuté's anger at this “priest militant” for allowing such a foolhardy risk. Yet.... He himself knows the Emperor works in mysterious ways. His orders are clear but his actions are never so. If he wasn't on the Golden Throne and instead a fully realized Warp entity rivaling all 4 major Chaos Powers by himself, there'd be nothing the Lord of Ultramar could do to contradict That kind of Faith. And I Felt all of that in every word here. Now I really want there to be more audiobooks with this kind of delivery from the characters. Especially when they're arguing or being “talked to”. Like the Tau being berated by the Ethereals if they step even a centimeter out of line because of their fear of them ending up like Commander Farsight and becoming a true-blue rebel of their own empire. With him taking in anyone who starts to wake up to the fact that similar to the Emperor, the Ethereals are and have likely always been lying to them as a way to maintain order. And if they weren't entirely lying, they were still more than likely hiding things That would probably help their people out a lot. Like not trusting the actual evil space elves. Lol

This scene is a fascinating parallel to an arguement the Emperor himself had with Ollanius Perrson a catholic perpetual whom had walked the earth most likely longer than the emperor himself yet still held to his old world catholic beliefs. Oll makes an unbelievably long and perilous pilgrimage to get face to face with the Emperor that takes him from the start of the heresy all the way to its final climatic battle, where he comes to learn that the Emperor has pulled so much of the warp's power into himself that he is undergoing apotheosis into a 5th chaos god, that prophecies called the Dark King. The machinations of the four chaos gods only become clear as their scheme reaches its zenith and they make their final move. It turns out the four outplayed the Anathema (the name the neverborn have given to the emperor) they used Horus as a pawn to put the Emperor into a lose, lose scenario. In order to beat Horus with the power the gods had bestowed upon him, the emperor would have to reach his full potential by drinking deep the powers of the warp, pulling more warp energy into himself than he had ever done before, drawing every bit of the warps malignant energies into himself that he could. He drew so much of the warps power into himself that it began to change him, corrupt him and remake him into the Dark King, the fifth god of Chaos. So Oll finds the Emperor in the midst of the Siege of Terra and confronts him, demanding to know why he has chosen to become exactly what he always refused to allow himself to become. Why it was alright for him to throw away his principles, his lifes work, the work he and Malcador had sacrificed everything for. It was the final plea on behalf of Malcador that was able to pierce the hurricane of psychic energies being drawn into what was quickly turning from the Emperor into the Dark King. It was the thought of his oldest friends final sacrifice, taking his place on the Golden Throne, the sacrifice he made to save their dream for mankind and as a final gesture of the fraternal love Malcador had for his Emperor. However that apotheosis wasn't truly stopped only delayed, as with all things involving the gods of chaos they are eternal, beings for which the passage of time is meaningless. The Emperor is becoming the 5th Chaos God within the warp, whether he likes it or not. The question is, did 10,000 years of loving devotion and worship nourish him with a power that can be used for the betterment of Mankind or is the Dark King still destined to be a malignant force of Chaos within the emperyian? Looking at the warp entities the Emperor creates with the powers he bestows, suggests he will be a god of order, perhaps even light but only time and the whims of Games Workshop can give us that answer.

What i love about this scene is both party's are effectively correct It is highly likely it was big E who acted But likely the twsed warp version of him born out faith of a billions of people Something Gman has likely not factored in, but also he is completely correct that such actions are insanely risky because in the same breath it could have been anything. This poor man of logic and science has awaked into a world where faith is a tangible real force and he simply can't ignore it and its clearly driving him nuts
