Finally natural environment degradation and climate change that the animal farming industry is one of the main contributors to have many victims both human and not. So there are definitely victims. I feel like this guy is aware, to the extent that he understands the disconnect. I hear people saying it's about choice. Of course, we're not obligate omnivores. However, if children are educated on where their food comes from (the whole process) they will not have a disconnect by blindly following, and they will be allowed the opportunity to make informed choices. When I was around 13 years old, my mother brought home a live chicken and asked me to kill it for her to cook it. I attempted to do it, but could not feel any feelings in my hand, and could not look at the chicken. Realizing I couldn't do it, my mother asked my brother, who was younger than me. He couldn't do it, neither could my mother. A neighbour eventually did, and my mother cooked it. But, although I was very hungry, I never touched the food. I went without food the whole day. I remember seeing pigs, ducks and chickens being killed when I was a child, and I still remember each and every one of them. I always knew that it wasn't right, but always dismissed what my heart said in favour of tradition. Thankfully, as I learned more about veganism, the light went on over my head. I think I needed confirmation that what I felt in my heart was real, and was therefore able to connect with my actions.

What made me become vegetarian was when I finally realized what I was eating. I always knew a steak was a part of a cow, but I wasn’t fully aware. However, the day when every time I took a bite out of a steak, I realized that it was flesh, like mine, and I saw images of them being killed and tortured with every bite I took, that was more than enough to take the good taste off my mouth permanently! It would be like having this great dinner that tastes great. Then asking the cook, “What did you do to make it taste soooo good? This dinner was delicious!” Then he tells you he used some of his boogers and phlegm to give it that amazing, oh so good taste! After hearing this, you probably would vomit because you know now what it actually is. Even if he tells you the cooking destroys all bacteria that may be in it. We also must stress out that taste buds adapt to new food. I don’t miss great taste in my life at all. I enjoy food as much as ever! Veganism was not a sacrifice, at all. This is something that must be told! It is just like when I was a kid, I hated avocados. Today, I love them on rice, on California rolls, which I consider to be the best food I have ever tasted. Something happens to my tastebuds when avocado, rice, cucumbers, and sea weed combine with soy sauce. Every time I eat it, I feel angels coming to arrest me, for they don’t have it in haven.

Its impossible to argue virtue signalling. Virtue signaling' is the practice of using moral talk in an attempt to enhance one's moral reputation. Virtue signalling actively undermines the proper functioning of public moral discourse and impedes moral progress. An example of virtue signalling would be comparing hens to humans or equating the slaughter of a pig as murder. You just have to smile and nod and remember that vegans are the cult of virtue signalling and change nothing.

Being carnivores, dogs and cats both have a short intestine length and are predisposed to do best on diets composed of quickly digestible foodstuffs like protein. Evidence for this can be found in their highly concentrated stomach acid, which has a high amount of enzymes that break down protein, and the lower levels of enzymes that break down carbohydrates (amylases) in their intestines. Cats and dogs also don’t have many of the specific enzymes that are required to digest many complex plant proteins. While not all carbohydrates are like this (corn and rice are easily digested by both species, if processed correctly), this can mean that less-digestible high-carbohydrate diets pass through the intestines of cats and dogs too quickly for the carbohydrates to be properly broken down and absorbed, and the end result is a lot of poop and not much nutrition. All animals need some amount of fiber to maintain a healthy intestinal lining and to prevent diarrhea, but too much fiber can impair protein absorption and cause digestive upset (Case et al. 2014). Based on the short, simple intestines of dogs and especially cats, we can see that they have fast passage rates, and therefore need easily-digestible, nutrient-dense food so that their physiology can make the most of what they do eat, and meat best fulfills all of those those requirements. Obligate carnivores like cats and ferrets have a limited ability to digest carbohydrates and are instead extremely efficient at making new glucose from non-glucose materials (a process called gluconeogenesis). Humans are also capable of using the gluconeogenic cycle to get energy, but we can turn it on and off as needed because our liver is able to regulate it. For cats the gluconeogenic cycle is always on, and that causes big problems when their diet does not contain enough protein. Since the cycle is always running, a cat’s body preferentially burns protein for fuel over everything else - if they don’t get enough easily digestible protein, the body will start breaking down and digesting its own muscles for energy. A recent study found that cats fed high-carbohydrate diets were unable to stop their bodies from breaking down any available protein to create glucose, rather than shifting gears and utilizing the glucose from the carbohydrates in their food (Harmon, 2016). In extreme cases, this could mean that the cat would wind up digesting its own muscles for energy. The inability to efficiently utilize carbohydrates as sources of energy is not the only problem with grain-heavy diets for dogs and cats: there’s also the issue of essential nutrients. The concept of essential nutrients is a common one - they are nutrients the body cannot create for itself that must be acquired regularly from the diet for an animal to survive. (For instance, vitamin C is a well-known essential nutrient for humans, guinea pigs, and some bats.) These can be amino acids, which build proteins; fatty acids, which build lipids; or vitamins. Imbalances or deficiencies in any of these can make a dog or cat very ill, and many of them are very hard if not biologically impossible for carnivores to synthesize from plant-based diets.
@treysonbates61102 жыл бұрын
Most mammals (including dogs) are able to process beta-carotene from plant tissue in order to get enough Vitamin A in their diet - cats, however, lack this pathway and require a dietary source of pre-processed vitamin A such as animal fat or organ meat (McNamara, 2014). Vitamin A is crucial for proper skin, fur, muscle, and nerve function, and chronic deficiency will lead to night blindness and muscle weakness. All animals need vitamin B in their diet, but cats have a unique requirement for high levels of the vitamins B3 and B6. Dogs also need B vitamins to stay healthy, but they are able to break down the amino acid tryptophan (McNamara 2014) to create a small amount if their diet doesn’t provide it. Because a cat’s digestive system burns through protein at such a high rate, their bodies don’t convert tryptophan into B3, which means they are obligated to get all their B vitamins from their diet. While B vitamins do occur naturally in many foods (Higdon et al. 2013, 2014), it is most efficiently acquired through a meat-based diet: in the wild, the high concentrations of B6 and B3 in organ meats would fulfill a cat’s daily requirements. B vitamins are water-soluble, which means cats cannot store them for later and must always have a steady supply, as the excess amounts each day are excreted in their urine. Without proper levels of B3 and B6, cats are unable to use protein to provide energy. (McNamara 2014). don’t worry only 5% of life feels pain (note this is rough estimate it most likely to be less) According to the U.S. National Research Council Committee on Recognition and Alleviation of Pain in Laboratory Animals, pain is experienced by many animal species, including mammals and possibly all vertebrates. Going vegan side effects sometimes include anemia, disruptions in hormone production, vitamin B12 deficiencies, and depression from a lack of omega-3 fatty acids. That's why it's crucial to include plenty of proteins, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, calcium, iodine, zinc, and omega-3s in your diet. -Timesofindia Vegetarians and vegans may have an increased risk of stroke The types of stroke were also analyzed, including bleeding into the brain (hemorrhagic stroke) and nonbleeding stroke (ischemic stroke). -health.harvard In the course of normal gestation plasma volume expands, producing a decrease of vitamins and minerals concentrations; however, plasma lipids and cholesterol arise. During early gestation the fat stores of mothers increase, whereas the last gestation is characterized by increased insulin resistance: these are metabolic changes essential to support fetal growth [29]. According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), pregnant women have to consume a variety of foods to maintain energy and nutrient requirements and to gain recommended amounts of weight. According to the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) and Institute of Medicine (IOM), caloric necessities are no higher than the estimated energy requirement for nonpregnant women until the second trimester. The extra energy requirement per day is 340 kcal in the second trimester and 452 kcal in the third trimester (IOM), or 260 kcal and 500 kcal, respectively (according to European Food Safety Authority-EFSA) [30,31]. The Guidelines recommend practicing moderate intensity physical activity during pregnancy for benefits to both the mother and fetus [32]. All pregnant women need appropriate nutritional supplementation. Iron supplementation is essential for iron deficiency anemia during gestation [33]. Folic acid consumption of 600 mcg/day from fortified foods and dietary supplements is needed to avoid neural tube defects (NTD) [34]. In addition adequate levels of vitamin D (600 UI/day), choline (450 mg/day), and iodine (220 mcg/day) are needed for normal fetal growth and brain development [35,36,37]. During a normal pregnancy the efficiency of calcium absorption increases, so the intake of calcium is equal to a nonpregnant woman of the same age. During pregnancy and lactation, adequate calcium intake is considered to be 1000 mg/day. Women with calcium intakes less than 500 mg/day need additional amounts to achieve maternal and fetal bone requirements [38]. Supplementary Materials Table S1 shows the daily nutrients requirements of the principal macro- and micronutrients during pregnancy and lactation, as well as a comparison between the American Guidelines, IOM, EFSA, and International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) [39,40]. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine suggests that vegetarian pregnant women have to follow the recommendations for protein intake and should increase up to 25 g of protein each day to reach 1.1 g/kg/day as in pregnancy the demand of protein increases [40,41]. The recommendations are to consume daily portions of dark green vegetables (1-2 servings), other vegetables and fruits (4-5 servings), bean and soy products (3-4 servings), whole grains (six or more servings), and nuts, seeds, and wheat germ (1-2 servings). Vegetarians should include sources of protein, iron, and vitamin B-12 intake, as well as calcium and vitamin D if avoiding milk products. Charts listed in these guidelines are useful for substituting beans, tofu, nuts, eggs, and seeds for meats, and include alternative food sources for calcium if milk and dairy products are rejected [3,41]. -ncbi.nlm.nih “The rising popularity of vegan lifestyles has led some people to consider feeding vegan diets to their pets as a “cruelty-free” alternative to normal meat-based kibble. Because marketing has led people to believe that their dog or cat is able to thrive on a meatless diet, they feel comfortable imposing their ethical views about eating animal products or the agriculture industry onto their pet’s lifestyle as well. However, this is a situation in which human morality not only does not apply to animals but also ends up being dangerously inhumane when expected to be ethical. Canine and feline bodies are not built to subsist singularly on plant matter; both cats and dogs evolved to subsist on a meat-based diet - dogs as opportunistic omnivores and cats as obligate carnivores. Dogs on a vegan diet are very likely to suffer from malnourishment that will drastically affect their quality of life, while vegan-fed cats are guaranteed to be sick and risk death from malnutrition. Recent research into the evolutionary history and gastrointestinal tracts of both dogs and cats proves that it is unwise, if not outright cruel, to feed them a truly vegan diet. Pets Evolved From Obligate Carnivores
@treysonbates61102 жыл бұрын
Of the two pet species, dogs fare better than cats (but not optimally) on plant-based diets due to adaptations towards omnivory during the domestication process. The domestic dog evolved from ancestors of the gray wolf some 15,000 years ago (Driscoll et al. 2009). In the wild, the gray wolf is a carnivore, deriving most of its nutrients from hunted or scavenged prey, and any vegetable matter came from the guts of their prey, or from self-medication (like how dogs will eat grass to induce vomiting). During the domestication process, dogs adapted to utilize a more omnivorous diet while scavenging around human settlements, and therefore have more flexibility regarding nutrient sources (McNamara 2014). However, their gastrointestinal tract is still primarily geared towards digesting a higher protein diet and their bodies still respond best to nutrients from animal sources. In contrast, the digestive system of domestic cats is still very similar to that of their wild counterparts. The domestication of cats mostly modified their flight distance and tolerance of human proximity, rather than radically altering their physiology as occurred with domestic canines (Driscoll et al. 2009). Without significant physiological changes during the feline domestication process, it follows logically that cats still get the most nutrition from a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that maximizes available protein sources. Visible Physical Attributes Indicate Meat Is A Primary Food Source There are multiple places in which the physiological evidence for this evolutionary predisposition to carnivory is easily visible in domestic cats and dogs. Both species have molars that are shaped to best crush bone and grind viscera. Animals with a more herbivorous diet will have differently shaped dentition: cows have flat molars to pulverize plant matter and humans have a mix of grinding and tearing teeth to allow an omnivorous diet. Cats have far fewer grinding surfaces than dogs do - their dentition is entirely geared towards shearing meat and bone (Bowen, 2006). This is even evident in regard to jaw motion, as herbivores like cows have wide, flat molars and jaw muscles that allow them to chew side to side with repetitively with ease (Orr, 2016), while carnivores like cats and dogs have a large vertical range of motion in their jaw that allows for efficient removal of a single mouthful of food without the need for chewing. “ This is from whyanimalsdothething They only people saying this is peta and there dumb while (Standard co uk) there no different, also while I was researching this clam I found that vegan kid are shorter and weaker then non vegan kids. Sources: (theconversation) & (totallyveganbuzz) Also (shutterheath org) says it not Heathy for baby’s and toddlers, and (webmd) (ncbi nlm nih gov) says that it not Heathy for for all stages of development to be vegan. In fact all Scientific date point to only adults being able to be vegan. Mice and ants are still used in test but this is the last test before humans so it has to go through a hundred more test before the get to animals test and this has lead to very few mice death. Also this is a necessary evil. If we don’t do this it ether stops helpful thing form coming out or slowing down. Source

@Treyson Bates Im a Vegan, though my cat and dog are currently not as I dont have ready access to proper vegan foods for them.. Very interesting information you supplied me (also dogs are omnivores not carnivores, which you even explained, despite calling them carnivores the same as cats) Very techy sounding, but I literally have no idea how to validate your credibility. How is it you know all this information? Are you a veterinarian or animal nutritionist? And what exactly is your point? As far as I've learned the science is beginning to show clearly that a dog can eat a (highly specialized) vegan diet, and there are a few pet food companies that have done and are doing research into it as we speak. As for cats I believe its less certain, but there is at least one study (bmcvetres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12917-021-02754-8) showing that cats on a Vegan diet live just as long as cats on a meat diet(over 800 cats were in this study and like i said these pet foods are highly specialized for these animals to be able to fully absorb and utilize the nutrients) Also have you seen a gorillas teeth? Or a hippos teeth? We arent feeding our cats and dogs grass my friend... and did you know the number one oldest record setting athlete in the world at over 100 years old ran marathons in his late 80's and accounts his longevity and wellbeing to a whole-food-plant-based-diet? His name is Mike Fremont. Also have you heard of the woman named Rocky Luedeker? She ha 13 world records for weight lifting under her belt at 62 years old and is a Vegan... I mean these are just a couple examples but do you know how much disease high meat based diets cause? Its the leading cause of heart failure ( though possibly losing out to the vaccine now) I think the pros of a vegan diet on health far outweigh any cons alleged by one organization.. Do you know how many studied there are that shows how healthy a plant based diet is compared to other diets? BUUUT despite all this, i care about the animals my friend, and if i have a few percent more chance of getting a stroke by not contributing to the mass enslavement, torture, rape, and murder of animals, im okay with that.

Im willing to adapt to the necessary changes and "necessary evils" as you call it for the betterment of my children. I currently dont have any children so its a non-issue for me at the moment. Buut, over the next couple years I intend to have a child and will be doing my own extensive reading (actual research takes a lot more than just reading something and regurgitating it) on the topic of feeding our growing kids a whole-food-plant-based-diet. But considering my cousin is a strict vegetarian and doesnt eat much cheese or eggs anyway, her 2 young children seem perfectly healthy and normal for their ages and they have shared the same diet their whole lives thus far. But i will be doing a lot more searching and reading on it. Thanks for all your info I suppose.

Then again, our ancestors weren't in numbers of billions whilst completely annihilating the global ecosystem through generationally-lasting pollution spearheaded by massive corporations, which is doing way more damage than generations of animals would. Animals weren't being batter-caged or shoved into massive warehouses back then, nope. Although plants do give protein, they are incomplete, & cannot be solely survived off of; us humans DO need it in our diets.

I went to UC Irvine, and stopped eating meat while I was there! Hopefully he has the same experience. What pushed me over the edge was twofold. 1. There’s an In-and-Out right across from campus where I ate all the time. It was cheap and tasty. The pure volume of burgers I was eating created a philosophical question in my mind about how many animals I was impacting just so that I could be eating.. and would I kill all of those animals to have as many burgers as I was having or was I overdoing it? 2. I went to Disneyland around the same time and they had this fall themed area with hay bales and a real life cow. And I met the cow and they were so sweet I realized in that moment I would *never* kill that animal just to eat it. And it sunk in how many burgers I was eating and how I had no connection between what I was eating and this being who I met. That sealed the deal for me and I’ve never eaten cow again.

"we're talking about 15 minutes of pleasure vs the entire lived experience and life of someone else". I am actually vegan (or mostly), but I don't entirely understand this argument. Isn't it the case that these animals wouldn't have any lived experience or life at all, if they weren't bred into existence for food? On the other hand, it could be argued that regardless of 'why' a conscious being is brought into existence, they are deserving of rights. I would also be curious to know if Ed would be supportive of a hypothetical animal farm where animals live an entire happy, 'natural' lifespan before being slaughtered for their meat. (ignoring the environmental/resource argument). It brings up some interesting philosophical questions that reminds me of the book, "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro.

I was a hardcore conservative and vegan hater and it was Ed's TED talk on veganism that petered out my conservatism-driven hatred towards veganism and it just happened almost 2 months ago. Before I was not listening to vegans and thought that vegans were unscientific, crazy, and always spout hatred, until I realized that mostly, it's the vegan critics who are unscientific, crazy, and always spout hatred, arrogance, and mockery. I was so blinded by my conservatism-driven and bible-based hatred that I always criticize and mock vegans, LGBTQ+, and others who are labelled today as non-conformists. Now, am I a vegan? No, but due to the awareness that I obtained from Ed's debate and talks, I am now making conscious decisions in my diet, and I am planning now to be a vegan. I know, it will be hard at first, but hopefully I'll get used to it. Probably, my innate dislike towards any type of burger, beef, ham, pizza, and the likes are blessings in disguise (yes, I don't eat burgers and hams, and I don't like beef and pizza. Ever since I was a child, I've been like this. Before, I tried to eat a burger and ham, but I really couldn't stand their taste. I don't know why). I think, it's also a blessing in disguise that I live in an agricultural country (the Philippines) which grows hundreds of varieties of fruits, crops, and vegetables, and that I am not heavily consuming chicken, fish, and pork in my daily diet. I think, on my part, one of the hardest things to give up is the fermented krill. I'm so used to eating fermented krill/ shrimp paste that, sometimes, I eat that for dinner (of course, with rice). Good luck to my kidneys and uric acid level lol. Also, I don't know if this also applies to the western countries, but we have this "culture" in our country called "meatless Friday", where every Friday, most households and local eateries will cook a delicious dish called "ginisang munggo" (it's a mung bean soup with jute leaves/ bitter gourd leaves and tofu- some would include pork or smoked fish to it, but many people use tofu as it is a lot cheaper than meat). Most Filipinos would eat ginisang munggo every Friday and it's very delicious! Another vegetarian dish that I love is the ginisang sayote (chayote soup). Sometimes, it's added with ground pork, but you can think of other alternatives to ground pork as it is not the main star of the dish. The first time I tasted it (almost 14 years ago), I already fell in love with it.

The argument of “I was brought up eating meat” is the reason people don’t find the mere thought of eating it so disgusting that they want to throw up. I stopped eating meat at the age of 15 in 1976, I always looked at eating meat as something I had to do although not wanting to because it was prepared for me. Anyway since then I have never taken any supplements, turned vegan a number of years ago, never worried about protein, just eat what my body craves. I have not had a doctor visit except for an ear infection in the past 45 years, I’m not overweight, although I am somewhat weaker and have trouble competing with my grandkids like I was able to a few years ago. The idea of eating a piece of a dead animal just disgusts me I guess because “I wasn’t brought up” that way not at least the past half century or so.
