'He Mele No Lilo' - Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu & The Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus. Something I did years ago to practise subtitling.

I bet if Queen Liliuokalani and her brother King Kalākaua, whom she succeeded, were alive to hear this they would smile. Such a beautiful song.

Modern Hawai'ians are upset by this song, if it's anything to go by. It's like cutting and pasting songs of George Washington with Abraham Lincoln together, into one song. "Wha...?"
@wc-83368 жыл бұрын
I don't know. It's only at the beginning and middle of the song, so it would be like saluting the Queen and her memory at the beginning (and middle, I never said my theory was solid) before commencing with the song. At least they respect their former Queen, we see our Presidents as f***s and we hate 'em (even Washington gets crap from time to time).
@eveningdim71678 жыл бұрын
WC-83 I mean, presidents and royalty are people. They all have done bad and good things. (I say that grudgingly...). I know it seems great to have a perfect fairytale king, but...They're only fully loved by the people when they're dictators requiring people to say that xD Even Britain's queen gets criticism, but she's loved and praised.
@eviticussavali30587 жыл бұрын
Every person in a Royal or leadership position gets bullshit because theyve done or had to do things that werent favorable by the people form time tot time but thats what comes with the job description. I dated this Hawaiian girl once and she and her family told me about their story. Theyre highly respected and loved but of course people hate some of the things they had to do
@johncisney1512 жыл бұрын
It takes on a new power when you actually know what they are saying. I knew this song had power, but I never knew the reason for that power was because they were praising someone. Kind of like a hymn or gospel, where the power emanates from the words themselves.

This is beautiful. And yes I cry with joy when I hear it. The first time I heard it as a child it just hit my soul. And I knew not what they were saying. And 18 yrs ago I got the translation from my teacher. Yes I was in the middle of history crying. And No 40 with 4 kiddos. And it still has gives me chill and tears of joy. Thank you to the country of Hawaii. And thank you Disney for helping outside such as myself be able to experience such a song understanding and remembering of such a beautiful culture. ❤❤❤😘🥺🥰🥰🥰

It does seem a little off, but these are the official lyrics I believe. Maybe they slurred the pronunciation a bit during that last part. I do happen to know why the 'kulele' in the lyrics sounds like 'tulele'. It's because [k] and [t] in hawaiian are variations of the same phoneme /k/, and although [k] is the more favored pronunciation nowadays, [t] is still quite common, especially in the Ni'ihau dialect.
