What *is* ironic is how much Disney contributed to copyright, and free domain, and everything in between, and… I don't think they as of now like the idea of free domain. Just to make a clarification here. The short _Plane Crazy_ had the first ever appearance of Mickey Mouse. _Steamboat Willie_ is the first *sound* cartoon that featured Mickey and it was more successful than the _Plane Crazy_ short. Both of these shorts are now part of the public domain though.

I can see this majorly affecting Disney’s brand image over time. If a version of Mickey can be used in less than savory ways, that may force them to start to distance themselves from the mascot. But it’s going to be forever engrained in the public consciousness as a Disney property. I’m interested to see how this all plays out for them.

R34 happens regardless. I might be wrong but I think that stuff generally falls under parody law so it doesn’t require public domain. But companies who own the characters might sometimes send cease and desists to get them to take it down, but it’s pretty much impossible to fight the proliferation of that stuff there’s just too much of it to take to court.

I like to imagine entering the public domain for a work is the equivalent of becoming an adult for a human. They can finally move on from the family and become anything they want to be. For many works, this is a beautiful moment they look forward to, though for some others, they have grown to be afraid of that moment because of how hard their company has tried to keep them from entering public domain. As a result, Mickey would be terrified for this moment because of how he had been raised to believe it's the worst thing that could happen to a creative work. But the reality is that he is now truly free, and he can be shared with the world beyond what a corporate entity would ever allow. There will be some bad, but there will also be good that will become of him. Something that I think he will realize throughout the years. Welcome to the world, Mickey Mouse. We've been waiting for you.

Keep in mind that only the oldest versions of Mickey Mouse are available. You cannot use stories or titles after 1928 yet. Same thing happened with Sherlock Holmes, the character was available for copyright free adaptation but not all the stories were. Touch Fantasia Mickey and the Mouse will still devour you.

I’ve seen a few people point this out but there were many versions of Mickey that entered public domain including ones were he wears red shorts and gloves so as long as u don’t give him modern styled eyes u should be fine

I’m patiently waiting for the thousands of recreations of the “lost” Mickey and Minnie sex tape. People are forgetting that Minnie (the steamboat version) is entering the public domain with Mickey. Edit: Stinky Pete too! He was the boat captain; he was more cat-like back then.

The colored rubberhose variant is gonna be public domain in 2031, as the cartoon The Band Concert is the first Mickey cartoon in full color, so we might get the colored retro design in a couple years.

In addition to the 1928 version of Mickey Mouse the 1928 version of Minnie Mouse is also public domain because she is in both shorts from 1928 that became public domain yesterday those being Steamboat Willie and the silent version of Plane Crazy

Disney might be a little hesitant to sue for likeness, as last I heard there's no solid case law on if newer revisions of mickey are still protected by copyright or if the character as a concept in whole is now public domain. Nobody has really been brave enough to either blatantly copy later versions of pooh or mickey yet, and Disney hasn't sued yet. Unless it's super blatant, I don't think either side will kick that legal hornets nest.

A fun use of Mickey I saw was for a vampire survivors type game called inverse ninjas vs the public domain, they had a trailer for him a week before new years and dropped him almost immediately on new years, was nice to see them technically get it first before any horror schlock lol

I also think horror is so clashing with the two characters (Winnie and Mickey) that the genre is more enticing. Romance/comedy movies can be really cheap too, but horror is kind of perfect for these children's characters who have long been revered as wholesome kids heroes.

Infestation 88 looks like it has inspiration from Bendy And The Ink Machine and a lot of Five Nights At Freddy's. MOUSE definitely is that classic rubber hose and sorta Mickey style, both look interesting
