He repeatedly tells her she’s worthless and unworthy of being loved. Then his apology consists of “that was awful to say”. Notice he does NOT say “those things aren’t true, I only said out of anger”. He only says that it was awful to say: Tells her only HE cares about her enough. He’s very insecure about this relationship, and thinks that “flaws” like her prior teen drug history and whatever else she revealed to him in vulnerability, are what make him worthy of somebody out of his league. The controlling behavior is only a sign of his insecurity and immaturity, but not the worst thing about him. He doesn’t respect her but he knows she’s too good for him. And only way to feel secure is putting her down and being the one who fixes her. Positioned himself as the arbiter of her worth . But even if she doesn’t articulate it, she can feel its icky and no way this lasts. Ironic thing is she probably recognizes the qualities that he tries to lord over her, but he’s too insecure and immature to stop throwing it in her face (and to stop throwing any of her past mistakes in her face). I’d be curious to see what these two look like.

This guy shows extreme signs of BPD. My ex had it and she could go hot/cold like that guy and it was wild to deal with. I read books on it, talked to medical professionals about it, spent over a 1000 hours in group therapy with people who had it. So I got to know quite a bit about it because the way I saw it was just because she has BPD doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve love. Problem is if the person with BPD isn’t willing to work on their behavior then there is nothing you can do… and that guy had so little self awareness that I can guarantee that he doesn’t think there is anything wrong with himself, and that’s scary to deal with!

This whole encounter threw me back to when I dated a guy who would start fights over the dumbest things to show he had control. One night, we were out with friends, and I wanted to try a beer. I was young and had never had that particular brand. From across the room, he pointed at me and scolded me like a bad dog. I took the beer, drank some of it, and simply told him, "we're doing this outside." We fought for 45 minutes out in the parking lot about how disrespectful he was, and just because he didn't like beer, that didn't mean i wasn't allowed to drink it. Anyways, that relationship lasted a total of 9 months, and I left him when he showed signs that he would get physical with me. I'm glad this girl is leaving the dude in this text, too. He will go down the same route eventually. It's not worth it.
