Look, I love cats. I have had a small army of them over the years. But theres a reason I keep them indoors. And it's exactly what Craigo says, they are not native to Australia. And its not just the birds that are being driven to extinction, many of our native one of a kind species are being hunted to near zero numbers too. Also there is nothing worse than the lingering stench of non-neutered tomcat spray. The cat repellent system is a pretty humane way to deal with the problem.

Same for me. Mine originally became indoor because my mom was tired of being woken up at 3 am to let the cat in. But they're currently indoor only because A I don't want to lose them & B because I don't want the few songbirds around killed by them. My indoor well fed spoiled princess has already got field mice that got in. Turned into a demon cat over it when I tried to take it away. I pried her jaws open & may have rescued it this time.

Nirrrina - Good for you. Keeping you cat under constant control 24/7 is the right thing to do. There’s no such thing as an “outdoor cat”. That’s a fallacy created by irresponsible cat owners who think the cat calls the shots. We’re called pet owners because WE decide who goes outside on what leash. 👉😿
@Nirrrina5 жыл бұрын
@@xyrzmxyzptlk1186 Ironically my cats also have to be kept indoors unless they're on a leash. Literally the apartments I live in sent out a note awhile back stating even cats have to be on a leash when outside. I don't know if it's still required because it was a couple of managers back. Didn't bother me since the very rare occasion I take one of my cats outside my door is on a leash. Although I have let them sniff around the door a couple of times. But I was blocking their way out too. I keep meaning to pick up orange collars too. Orange is supposed to mean an escaped prisoner. Or indoor cat only that needs help immediately.

That comment going "Boohoo just feed the cats and they won't kill birds" is so stupid, cats kill even when they are provided with a food source because it is their nature as a predator. My aunts cat is a good example he's an absolute chonker at eight kilograms and still hunts constantly. and if anything wouldn't feeding them just attract more cats?
@Nirrrina5 жыл бұрын
Yes it would definitely attract more cats to feed them. There's a couple around my apartment belonging to a neighbor. I made the mistake of very occasionally feeding them the stake cat food my precious little snobs don't like. Now a couple of times a month they follow me home if they're hungry. It's really not too big of a deal though. Because they're spayed and neutered. Plus they literally run off any other stray cats that dare to show up around here. Which is great. As for hunting. My spoiled always indoor only tiny princess cat is still a successful huntress. She also turns into a demon cat if you try to take away the poor field mouse she caught indoors. I may have saved the last one though by literally prying her jaws open. Boy was she pissed. Even with an entire can of food to bribe her with/as a reward. A cat simply enjoys killing. They're one of the few species that seems to hunt for fun. Fat lazy housecats are simply genius hunters. They enjoy it and they're good at it.

I wish more people understood this invasive predator vs. native species concept. Sometimes they'll retort with "but native predators are killing native species!" As they should, that's the balanced ecosystem. Some people are letting their love for cats cloud their logical judgement. I'm not really a dog or cat person, but I absolutely love snakes to death and they are some of my favorite animals ever. Yet it is well known that Burmese Pythons are awful invasives in FL. So guess what? I live in FL and I kill Burms on sight without hesitation, even though I've meet tons of sweet and docile captive animals. It's not their place, and my love for them doesn't matter in this context. Period. For both the cats and the pythons, it isn't their fault that they are invasive, they're just doing what animals do. But we humans made a horrible mistake letting them out, and unfortunately it's the animals that pay the price.

I could do with one of those cat repellant guns. I'd have to install the outside power and water, but it'd be worth it. Can you ship to England? A thought for an upgrade: Move the sensor further right and put a second squirter off to the right of it, so the cats get a double stream while they're in the middle with not quite enough room. Whichever way they go, they'll get a full soaking from one tube or the other. I still think you should preload it with food colouring so the first cat of the night goes home bright red and stains everything.

This is so not about the food chain guys goodness... Many people own cats as pets and feed them. *The cats are not naturally sustained by nature and they don't need to kill these birds to survive, they get sustained by humans and their massive population is artificial, because we keep them as pets.* If they were living by themselves then we'd have a natural balance of cats and their preys, but the way it is we have an unnatural amount of cats that kill a shitton of birds - and no matter how many they kill the cat population will not decrease for lack of food and a depleted bird population, because they get fed by humans. This is no natural balance why is this so hard to understand ffs

Agree, most domestic cats hunt for amusement.

@@emeraldbonsai From a certain philosophical standpoint you may be right, but only from that one. Humans are the only beings that are able to completely disrupt the natural way of things and the natural balance, changing and destroying ecosystems, plundering ressources, completely wiping out whole species etc. Why is that? All other beings are part of a pretty stagnant cycle of things, but technological progress and our own human will very much completely changes that. So yeah I would agree with you if we lived in nature without technology, like old native tribes eating from the lands, but the way we behave is not the natural 'take what you need' cycle. We also willfully alter things with directed purpose that other animals will never have. (like only hunting certain species because their pelts sell well) Also because of that human will we can do things like that - protecting birds purposefully to balance out our other actions again like keeping tons of cats as pets. So yes while you could argue that we're part of the cycle as well and the order of things I'd say that we don't behave like that. Without human interventions these would not be issues to deal with and they would balance themselves out so we need to balance out what we disrupted ourselves.
@AlisSpark5 жыл бұрын
@@emeraldbonsai like I said from a certain philosophical view yes - though I could argue though that humans are keepers of nature and above it like many religions do but let's go with what you say - since in essence you are only arguing for apathy with it. "It does not matter, let's destroy as much as you wish to, because it's all part of the natural order and cycle anyway." Which is completely uncaring, I mean sure if you want to live in a world like that. You know we as people have the possibility to influence our behaviour and I could also say that from your point of view maybe my arguing is already part of the natural cycle of things: The fact that you say that we are nature and nature is rebalancing itself and rebalancing what humans disrupted means that we also rebalance ourselves. So that would make me arguing for preservation part of the balancing act of nature since I'm also part of that nature restoring what humans have disrupted. But honestly it's really more a question of conscience: Do you want to help some more birds live or do you simply not care if cats just wipe out tons of birds? One could just keep them indoors during the time where the baby birds are still in their nests or one could protect some of those nests with some measures like the uploader^^
@Hick255 жыл бұрын
Gisol even if the cats were living by themselves, it wouldn’t be a natural balanced especially in Australia, due to the fact that in Australia cats are an introduced species and and Australian wildlife isn’t adapted to cats
@AlisSpark5 жыл бұрын
@@emeraldbonsai It seems pointless to discuss and you sound like the future is predetermined, yet what is going to happen is not a fact set in stone but depends on many factors. Global warming does not have to kill us all and birds do not all necessarily have to be wiped out in australia by cats either. it's not a fact what is going to happen, only what has happened. Many factors can influence the future. (Also yes it is a fact that we have the bodies of animals indeed but whether that makes you as a being an animal is an entirely different discussion as well. For example I'd disagree that you are your body)

A good strategy I recently learned from my mate is to trap the neighbour cats using a $30 eBay trap. Once trapped drop it off at the local pound but make sure you do it late afternoon. By the time the pound alerts the owner it will be too late to pickup that day & as the cat now has to stay overnight it will cost the owner more money to retrieve the cat. Also I recently heard KFC is irresistible bait to even the most trap savvy cats. Also I’d love to see a multi water jet ground pad type setup, something to wet the whole underside of the cat at once when triggered, I reckon the resulting aerial acrobatics would be amazing.

can we all just agree to keep our pets indoors?.. cats arent natural predators in a lot of areas, so please just keep them indoors. if you want to keep them outside then dont even get one, at that point you are just feeding a stray you bought, named and put outside. i have been tempted on many occasion to trap the ones around me and give them to animal control because they keep pissing on the grill i like to cook food on.
@denisegore18845 жыл бұрын
That's so disgusting. Maybe you could make flyers an do a letterbox drop in your area. Suggest that you are going to trap cats. Maybe that you will release them far from home even.
@alysani01935 жыл бұрын
@@denisegore1884 That would only cause issues.. the only way to fix that would probably be to trap the ones without collars and bring them to the pound without my neighbors finding out. it would be a big issue if that crazy bitch across the street saw me trapping cats.. she gave me a look that could kill just for petting a cat on my way out of the house. havent seen that little cat since that day, idk what she did with it.

taygata - if you (as the owner) decide to let your pet wonder outside on their own, then you (as the owner) are 100% responsible for making sure they don’t interfere with other people & are responsible for any damage they cause. It’s your job no matter what to keep your pet (that you have taken responsibility for) off of other people’s property. If you can’t guarantee your pet will stay off of another person’s property, then keep them inside! There are several ways for you to let your pet roam with out interfering with others. * not trying to sound angry at you, just the situation *

taygata - I’m saying by our human laws & social acceptance: if you have a pet, than it is your responsibility to make sure it doesn’t interfere with others. Think of it like this: if you have a bird that makes calls so loud that can be heard through the walls to your neighbors, then who is at fault? Answer: the human owner. The bird has no concept of being too loud or annoying a neighbor, but the human does. If they choose to have the bird as a pet, then they choose the additional responsibility of making sure it doesn’t bother unwilling people around them.
