The free repair to the sticking throttle body isn't filing down the butterfly, it's banging a self-tapper in from underneath - Tbody off - so that it protrudes in just enough to stop the butterfly from knee-locking into the stuck position. Make it so it just barely closes but can't kick-over into the locked position. It's only when it kicks past that last 1 or 2mm that the "stuck" condition arises. Bang it back on, run a position re-learn & save 500 quid. Or 6k in this case. :-) Won't work? Wanna bet? Oh yes it will. I file the tip of the screw flat once it's in, then adjust it so it acts as a physical stop. Bosh - issue resolved. Costs 10p - or 100 quid if you pay me to. Because.

Take off the pipe running between the air filter and the engine. There is an electrically operated butterfly valve there. Check for soot that prevent its operation.
@hughmarcus17 ай бұрын
He wants to get rid of that pronto. It says Gen2 on the pipe. What they've done with the gen2 TDV6 is utter madness. There's an electronic control on the oil pump that reduces oil pressure at idle to 'reduce emissions' for Euro 6. This on an engine where they've pushed the limit of the crankshaft. This owner has had multiple DPF problems, so you can guarantee oil dilution. It's a ticking time bomb. There's such a demand for rebuilt/replacement gen2 engines that they're making £8-10k on the black market. JLR can't even a delivery date for a short motor. BTW I've owned multiple LR models down the years.
@MadAntz9707 ай бұрын
Its also a problem that I'm starting to see on VAG group current gen v6 tdi's as well. Not sure why people seem to hate on them either. If you need a vehicle with some balls for towing, they're a great car. There aren't many vehicles out there where you can tow a 3500Kg trailer with relative ease. A friend on mine recently had a 3.0L Discovery; he used it for towing a trailer stage. Other than the split inlet manifold (which he knew about when he bought it) it's not given him any bother. He only moved it on as he had 4 vehicles, and of the vehicles he had, it was the least practical.

Why on earth wouldn't you look at the least intrusive thing first. Took 2 seconds to remove the clip and inspect. If it sticks shut, boost is high! Carbon clean or replace with new. Tbh the turbo was probably leaking oil and mixed with the egr carbon and caused this to stick. Its makes a right mess. Vws are bad for the throttle sticking due to carbon. No idea why you would try file that throttle, that's just odd.

Those jag/land rover vehicles are just utter shite now. My favourite is probably the Ingenium engine in the discovery sport. Prone to timing chain failure, but to change the chain you have to pretty much take the car apart as it lives on the flywheel end of the engine! Of course if you're already in there you might as well do a clutch. Even if you're doing it for yourself it soon becomes an expensive undertaking!! Designed to fail for sure.

Didn't your tester show you the sensor was blocked? Was the throttle body really broken? I can see why the customer didn't want to buy a new one. There is no way all the people spending £6K to £12K on this repair went to a main dealership. They have been going to backstreet garages who think a fault code reader tells them what to change. You still need to know how the engines work as a fault code shows a condition. It just gives a clue.
@Duxieking697 ай бұрын
tools won't tell you sensor is blocked as the car computers can't check that lol, they can tell you if its underboosting or overboosting or expected pressure hasn't been met but that's about it - which is exactly what the fault would be in that Range Rover, with the throttle body blocked you would get overboosting codes

It depends of how you drive. When the engine is cool the DPF loads up fast. So if you are only doing shorter trips you can gain 1-2 grams in 10 km. But when all temperatures are up and you are driving on highway you can get 1-2 grams in 60 km. So it really depends on how you drive these cars.
