Man that dricus situation was so dumb bc he wanted to actually off dricus bc he gave him the same energy and then he went on a long pity party on twitter and theo von's podcast. To explain the Japanese thing you were talking about, the word “otokonoko” spelled as 男の子 means literally a male child, pretty much used how we would use the term boy. The kanji 子 meaning child can be substituted for the kanji 娘 for a female child. Typically it’d be pronounced “musume”, but you can pronounce it as “ko”. So even though otokonoko typically means male child, if you replace the kanji with 娘 it can still be pronounced as otokonoko but it’d be spelled 男の娘 which would translate as male daughter.

the point he makes about just politely telling someone to stop is so valid and ludwig's response is braindead as usual, OBV it won't work every time, but it is FAR more likely to work than yelling at them, especially if you are a girl. you are not intimidating anyone by yelling, you are just giving them exactly the response they wanted and now they know you're a fun target and will mess with you even more. plus, becoming confrontational just makes them push even harder, a troll will NEVER give in to you and will ALWAYS continue to escalate the situation because they find it funny, so don't yell or get mad and they don't get what they want, getting super mad about it and screaming at a monitor makes YOU the loser.

❤ Great vid. I’m a girl who plays OW partly bc I have older brothers who made me play shooters while growing up. Acheeto is 100% correct that we like playing support, not dress-up, that’s irrelevant when the underlying gameplay is still PvP. It’s Its not that we dislike shooting/ DPS role, but the reality is girls have slower twitch muscles in our hands than boys, but better prediction ability & slower heart rate. Therefore we can excel more in support roles where we can anticipate rather than roles where we have to react quickly. It’s literally more enjoyable for girls to play support than for guys who often get frustrated by it. Same w/ girls playing healer in MMOs like WoW. Note that Blizzard games like WoW, OW & Hearthstone have the highest girl % but I think that’s also bc those are just good games with great art & colorful aesthetics that appeal to everyone.

Ok just wanted to add a note for around the 57:00 mark where TBYS is talking about RDR2. I’m a 19 yo female (college student and private pilot). Not a gamer at all but I absolutely freaking loved rdr2. It came out when I was in middle school and I could not stop playing it on my brothers play station. It was his game but I played it exponentially more. It started all because of the horses, they were so freaking awesome. I had a collection, and my main one was the white Arabian you find in the snowy mountains, can’t remember the name of the area. i spent some much time searching for that horse and trying to tame it. I also loved the brindle thoroughbred and Buell, the Dutch warmblood that was gold colored. The horse aspect got me really into the game. I would steal npcs carriage horses if I thought they were pretty. One time my brother let my white Arabian get attacked and killed by an alligator near Saint Denis and he didn’t have a save point from after I got the horse and I literally cried, I was so mad at him too lol

You know what's bullshit about RDR2? You can only have 4 horses total. (Technically 5, but 4 in stable.) I don't know who decided there should be a limit like that, instead of letting you own as many as you want, but that person needs to never make suggestions again. Currently, with the game beaten, I have: A white arabian - randomly found while hunting for the legendary bison, lmao. Almost quit the hunt to get the horse. Rachel - John's horse. Buell - the horse of the veteran. And a Mustang, because Mustangs are a classic. But man oh man, I wish I could have 1 of each. A full collection :/

As a woman, the games I tend to gravitate towards are fantasy rpgs and story rich games. Character customization is a huge draw to me and that’s why I got into modding. Red dead redemption 2 was interesting to me due to how good the story was, the horses were something that I really started to like halfway through the game. BG3, dragon age, Skyrim, dragons dogma: I played all those because they’re story heavy, rpg, customizable. Assassins creed are also enjoyable because of how atmospheric they are and I do actually enjoy the combat of those (the story can be hit or miss). The only multiplayer game I play is Black Desert Online because I have a pretty character and I enjoy the grinding (similar to why I like stardew valley and breath of the wild). Most of my girl friends (not all, of course, but most) tend to share my interests.

That's the third or fourth genre women are most into. The first and second are Sim games (like stardew) and puzzle games. Management games like Roller Coaster Tycoon are also up there. Competitive shooters are the worst at single digit percentages.

Something people seem to skip over the point of insulting people online. Women get more gendered harassment cause its more likely to get a rise out of women then men. They're trying to insult you complaining about it only shows that its working.

It does more too. For a wider audience it pushes a binary decision, the false choice of like one of our stuff but not the other. It also solidifies your base by making a friend enemy distinction with who you're insulting. It's weakness is that its aggressive which scares some people off and leaves you open for huge gotcha moment if the otherside reacts well

Same reason people use race or ethnicity so often for insults. It’s so much easier to get under someone’s skin with those than it is to make a specifically tailored insult while having limited information

If an insult doesn't get a rise out of people, you become the clown. Missing a tailored insult is more embarassing than nabbing someone with universal insult.

There's an interesting point around 22:30 about people being data illiterate. I am currently attending a technical college where we frequently have to write reports and analyses, which of course need to have sources and data to back it up. This kind of behavior is rewarded, we're taught to do this. One of the most frequent critiques we get in my class is that our reports aren't 'convincing' enough. If we use a source that doesn't back up our point, or goes against it, that's bad, and we're always told to only look for data that supports our message, and discard the rest.

Pushing for confirmation bias is absolutely destructive to academia - the whole purpose of scholarship is to find truth and survey ideas and evidence and data for a better understanding of truth. Sometimes that runs parallel to expectations and other times not but there must be a certain level of dispassion which allows for a more fair and honest analysis of evidence. I have seen far less of this in hard sciences (physics specifically) however I would imagine that social sciences, political sciences, and other such fields that are more vulnerable to sociopolitical forces are rife with this data illiteracy.

57:03 - As a female, I like games that you can role-play and dress up. The cuter the dressing up is, the better. Bonus points on the game if you can design things, and most females I know go for those types again over just plain shooter games... I enjoyed watching my brother play Metal Gear, but I loved the gameplay/storyline, but I'm not really playing it! So, I would agree with TBYS on that one.

Acheeto is 100% right about women gamers. They tend to prefer games that require strategy over skill. This is why WAY more women play 3D fighters instead of 2D fighters. There are way more options for countering and out-thinking your opponent. That said, I totally buy the "Women play Red Dead for the horses" claim as well XD
