HEAD stars The Monkees in their one and only screen appearance and features the same antic humor and musical numbers that have made the series a classic. The supporting cast includes Annette Funicello (as Minnie), Frank Zappa, Victor Mature and, in a small role, Teri Garr.

I remember way back in the 80’s Terri Garr on Letterman talking about this movie. She joked that the only reason they made the movie was so if they made another one, they could advertise it as, “From the people who gave you Head…” 😂 And speaking of Terri Garr. What a beauty. Always had a thing for her. RIP Funny lady.

The significance of the fame-bubble entrapment machine, the mechanised regulation of day-to-day life, military might without moral authority, the loss of identity in society, the personal subsuming of self in the commercial landscape, the unthinking totalitarianism of the establishment, police control of freedoms and the meaning of existence itself ; quite a lot (and more) to fit into a 1 hr 24 mins film ! And music too!, I just love the psychedelic presentation of these concepts, truly a misunderstood masterpiece. Thanks for posting ! :)

Actually, i quite like this. I last saw it on British TV over 25 years ago. It moves along from scene to scene and doesn't slow down. And there's all sorts of things to look at in it.

I grew up with 1970s Monkees reruns and saw Head on Cinemax in 1990 and taped it. I was very disappointed the first time. I saw it again maybe 5 more times in as many years, and it grew on me. I went a decade without seeing it, then loved it!

Seems like this one of those films that you either love it or hate it. I'm in the first category. I saw it in the theater back in '68 and although it was nothing at all like the Saturday morning show, I still enjoyed it's quirky, offbeat humor with the psychedelic tunes (I was all of 11 at the time) and think it holds up well today.

Head substantiated the notion that the Monkey's were locked into their persona as a television creation and that any attempts on their part to become or be an actual band was doomed to failure. The younger television viewers that had grown to love their onscreen clowning were not interested in seeing that taken to any other level. And the more mature acid crowd had already left the Monkeys behind. According to Wikipedia production and direction of the film was pretty much an acid drenched project. While that might be cool for the audience, it's not the best source of action for all the highly technical aspects of movie creation.

Bob Raefelson looks exactly like Cosmo Kramer in this picture and don’t forget that Hendrix used to open up for them in these days too! Zappa’s not in here for a minute and I wish there was more music than their own schtick honestly; cuz they were capable of doing so! A total missed opportunity for them to actually just play their songs together for the very last time as their television series was shortly cancelled by the network within a couple of months.
