A feature I have found I love with the urban that I didn't expect: due to the short length I can carry it one handed with the muzzle down while out hunting, making climbing around easier.

The Urban wins to me, accuracy should be a tie because the one flying could easily just be a bad skirt on the pellet....especially since it only happened the one time. That being said I would go with the lighter gun. Lighter is just more fun :)

Great video guys! As others have mentioned, I'm not sure I can consider your match-up truly head 2 head!! While I prefer the Urban 10 fold over the Gauntlet, it's obvious which one you're trying to sell. Hey, I get it... business is business. Keep up the great job!!
@airgunsbb
@airgunsbb 7 жыл бұрын
IMHO the Gauntlet is just too heavy for field use! SO..........for me the Urban wins hands down by a big margin! When comparing "head to head" it is best to consider the intended use for the guns! While the Gauntlet would win hands down for bench shooting, the Urban would win hands down for field use! Two different intended uses, so not a great "head to head" comparison!

Ya,'ll missed to point out that the power can be easily adjusted on the urban by adjusting the hammer spring pre load but in the gauntlet you would have to re shim the regulator for a higher output pressure. I vote that the gamo wins in adjustability

I have them both and out of the box with nothing done to either gun I would choose the urban. It's just put together so well and feels so sturdy in the hand. But...thanks to hajimoto and his videos on KZbin I have been able to resurface the inside of the gauntlet and make the trigger feel great. Plus put a barrel band on the gauntlet. He is a genius with that gun. So now they feel very similar with smoothness of cocking and trigger. I have only had to put a longer screw in the urban for the 2nd stage on the trigger. Now I would choose the gauntlet cuz of the shot count and consistency over the entire 60 shots.

I have a Gauntlet in 177. Matter of fact, one of the first ones to hit the streets when they came out. It can be very accurate for a low budget gun ------- IF ----- you are very careful not to bump the barrel or hold it from the barrel. Take a look at the video where the turning gun is supported by the barrel..You can clearly see how the barrel bends upwards away from the forestock. That is a result of the weak shroud support in the breech block and a lot of leverage at the end of the barrel working against it and that translates to a POI shift if the barrel gets any bumps or hits at all. It may even shift on some guns as a result of the shot vibration. I supported the shroud by a band I made that attaches to the air bottle. Not a perfect solution because the air bottle moves a little also, but in combination, they work together to add some strength to the equation. Now the gun can be relied on to hold point of impact much better than before. I have made numerous one hole groups at 40 yards on a calm day.
@airgundepot
@airgundepot 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are remarkably accurate guns, especially at the price point. The floating barrel is very accurate, but, as you note, very susceptible to poi changes from bumps. It seems like the poi gets back to zero after some shooting, but aftermarket barrel bands are a great solution. We'd love to see a picture of yours!

I wasn't going to get the Urban because of the extra magazine cost, but then I did because I got a deal on the Gamo Urban for $172.95 with free shipping before Christmas. For now I am just using the one magazine and am looking and waiting for a better price on the spares. I like it so far and am glad I scored a great deal.

Thanks for the comparison guys, I was hot to trot to get a Gauntlet but they were back ordered till the end of time (it seemed) and I had NO INTEREST in the Gamo ... till I seen where it was made in the BSA factory and it had a hammered forged barrel and got great reviews from people I respected on KZbin. So I bought the Urban from WallyWorld for $219 (almost felt bad paying such a low price, the price went up since) I have been very pleased with the performance of this nice shoulderable rifle. I talked my friend into buying one and we are having a great time competing against each other killing paper targets and birthday candles flames, etc. The trigger isn't the greatest but it hasn't stopped us from making some great shots. We like to brag about having a gun made in the BSA factory and then complain about paying BSA prices for a extra mag. Oh well I can live with one mag till somebody wants to buy me a nice gift of another mag. I will get a Gauntlet sooner or later maybe wait an see if a Gauntlet gen 2 pops out like it happened to me with my Marauder. I can say this about the Urban, I've spent a LOT more and got a lot less accuracy and to me it's all about the accuracy when come right down to it in my kind of shooting. (well safety in a part of it too) I have a Benjamin Armada .25 that is a absolute tack driver at 50yds but what a beast to tote around. I've been a springer plinker for many years and I'm now loving the PCP's, especially if you have a compressor to pump them up.

I got a Umarex Gauntlet .22 last month for my birthday .when I first got it I totally loved it .It was accrete right out of the box .not hard to pump up .but a few days ago I decided to go out and shot a few targets .I loaded my first pellet took aim and fired .I heard a loud pop .then I loaded a second pellet took aim again .and fired .I heard another loud pop and the pellet bounced off a cardboard target at 30 yards ..I started looking the gun over and found that the bolt probe had broken off just at the end of the bolt seal and all was gone .I am so disappointed I am ready to toss it in the trash .I cant even find parts for it .

I`ve had the Urban now for over a year,its super easy to handle,smooth cocking,for general pesting around your property,its ideal,prices of spare mags are stupid and Gamo should get a slap in the face for this.This was my first pcp,they had been out at the same time,I`m not sure which I would buy,both very good first time pcp,there is talk though of the Gauntlet bring a .25 cal,I mite be interested in one of those.Oh and the Urban I fill with a hand pump,no problem at all.

But wait! There is more. I just received a Gauntlet and already have a couple Urbans in my store. Other than noting that some KZbinrs (like Hajimoto) have posted numerous videos trying to correct deficiencies and issues with the Gauntlet and refine the rifle's performance, I notice that this video is skimming the surface of the qualities of these two guns. IMO, they are both nice rifles and are both $300, but the Urban is a much better rifle out-of-the-box. The Gauntlet's biggest positives should be the adjustable cheek comb and the regulator. But, compare the two and the Gauntlet falls well below the Urban for fit, finish, and action. The Urban feels solid and smooth with a dramatically better trigger, much smoother bolt action (the Gauntlet I received feels gritty which many reviewers have noted), better balance, much shorter than the Gauntlet's 46", and is much quieter in real world testing (decibel meter places 10' away). The adjustable comb on the Gauntlet is nice and actually essential given the height of the action relative to the butt. I had to raise the comb over 1/2" to get proper alignment with an Accushot scope with 44mm objective lense on medium rings. The idea of the regulator is also nice but this is a non-adjustable regulator (you can reconfigure the internals to adjust the output but it is not a dial adjust like a HuMa. Technically it is modification, not adjustment, when you rebuild it) and mine is under-performing based on the chrony results; as has been reported by many reviewers on KZbin. Last direct observation of the Gauntlet vs the Urban is if you like a rifle where you have to really pull hard to get the bolt to the rear position and locked and enjoy hanging on tight when you return the bolt so that it doesn't snap forward when lifting it out of the rear detent, you are going to love the Gauntlet, but not the Urban. Hajimoto has an excellent set of videos in which he takes the Gauntlet completely down, cleans up the milling on the hammer, smooths out the hammer tube, properly aligns the front shroud over the air bottle, makes a variety of adjustments, adds new baffles to the poorly baffled suppressor/shroud system, reconfigures the trigger to improve its performance, and rebuilds the regulator to get it to deliver the correct pressure (on a new rifle?). I plan to make all these modifications to the Gauntlet I have as well as one or two other items I think can be improved. But in the interest of creating a real world comparison of these two nice inexpensive rifles, I also plan to do a video with several shooters at a local range trying out both rifles in their unmodified out-of-the-box versions. Then I will make all the Gauntlet (keeping track of the hours required so that I can assign a dollar value to the mods and repairs) improvements I've found on KZbin (BTW, my Gauntlet arrive with absolutely the dirtiest barrel I have ever taken out of a box so be sure you clean the barrel if you get one. Have at least 100 patches and plenty of Ballistol). With the Urban I will install a HuMa regulator and add a removable cheek pad. I believe that even at a very low hourly rate, the cost of the Gauntlet work will considerably exceed the cost of adding the regulator to the Urban. I will then have the same shooters try out both rifles again and give their impressions. Then we will have an accurate and complete comparison of two $300 rifles that both cost closer to $450-$500 by the time they are both optimized. Watch for "Gauntlet vs Urban; Another Perspective" on KZbin in about 12 weeks. Shoot straight and shoot often; happy shooting!

Great video. I've had my eye on the gantlet for a while now. It's an interesting gun in many ways. However the most interesting thing to me is the fact that Umarex threw down the gauntlet and some other manufacturers picked up that challenge to create a sub $300 regulated PCP. This opened up the PCP market to a whole new group of shooters. Good job Umarex. I would love to see a head to head between the Hatsan BullBoss and the Kral pitcher breaker in .25 cal.

I have the Gauntlet and she has the Urban. For my money the urban definitely wins. It's literally a BSA in a Polymer stock (which shoulders amazingly). Stock is WAY better on the Urban and so is the action. There is NO comparison. The Gauntlet is Chinese built and it absolutely shows. The Urban is LITERALLY a BSA rifle made in the BSA factory in England. This is BSA quality.... bsaguns.co.uk/air-rifles/pcp-airguns/ The Urban is a $6 to 800.00 rifle that you can get for $219 - 399.00. The Gauntlet is a $200 rifle that they sell for $300.

Add a barrel support on the Umarex no one can touch you at that price range for accuracy. Just by resting it on the barrel you can see the difference in flex from the shroud to the tank. Look at minute 5:08 but that can be addressed.

Having a regulated air rifle is deceptive - everyone wants shot count but fail to realize that it takes a whole lot of pumps from a hand pump to get those counts (true you don't have to pump it all the way up to max but shot count goes down also), and believe me once you start to go over 2600 psi you just about have to do a hand stand on a hand pump.. To buy a fill tank is expensive and the refilling is also expensive and to buy an electric high pressure pump is also expensive.. (which doesn't make it budget friendly any longer).. From viewing other reports on the Gauntlet, people are reporting 20-25 fps extreme spread, to me that is not impressive for a regulated gun.. Also, both the Gauntlet and Urban to me are underpowered, 20-22 fpe doesn't fair well if you want to push them over 40-50 yards (mainly because of trajectory - you have to be more precise on the distance or you will miss), light pellets slow down too quickly and heavy pellets are just too slow and don't have enough momentum to carry flat enough for distances.. If you are wanting entry level then there are other choices to consider - Benjamin Maximus, Beeman QB Chief, Diana Stormrider are some considerations and all are very accurate and under $200.. My .177 (brand not important), shoots 16.2 grain JSB Beast at 925 fps (30+ fpe), easily does 5 hole in hole shots at 25-30 yards (very accurate).. 100 yard shots are a walk in the park.. Unregulated - 10 shots with extreme spread of 5 fps, 20 shots with extreme spread of 20 fps.. pumping 2350 psi and 2600 psi respectively.. With a full fill to 200 bar (2900 psi) will yield 40-60 shots with 25-30 usable shots within 40 yards.. For me I do not need a regulated air rifle, I shoot 10 shots (extreme spread of 5 fps - better than some regulated guns) and use a hand pump of 25 strokes to bring it back up to 2350 (not a back breaking chore of 75 pumps or more).. To me shooting 10 shots and then re-pumping is a break, like shooting a 22 rimfire with a 10 round clip and then refilling the clip.. Works for me and it may work for you also.. If you are going to stay on a budget then consider the pumping factor, if you have to pump 75 or more then the fun factor drops off quickly, but just a few strokes, such as 25 strokes is not so bad.. Don't get me started.... hahaha

Is it bothering anyone else that they are bending the shroud and barrel on the umarex gauntlet the entire time it was in the stand!?! The gun has enough issues from huge point of impact shifts from the barrel being tapped near the end because of the way it attaches to the receiver. So this just brought on all sorts of cringe. Quoted from an actual user in a review. "The first is how sensitive the barrel is to being bumped or hit. It will change the PO Impact by a good 2 inches at 40 yards and require you to readjust the scope. The barrel is held in place with two grub screws at the top and the barrel shroud is held on by a collar that is secured by the barrel itself at its base where it comes out of the receiver. The leverage at the end of the barrel is dramatic and I feel that is the main reason for the change in POI. Remember a small change here makes for a much larger change out at 40.e So anyone getting this gun should be very careful not to bump the barrel. That makes for a not so much fun time if the gun is used for hunting while you traps through the woods. The chances of a bump are high. ".
@airgundepot
@airgundepot 6 жыл бұрын
There is no doubt that bumping is an issue with the floating barrel of the Gauntlet, however it has to be a pretty firm bump to knock the poi off and it tends to walk most of the way back to zero after a handful of shots. We laid the barrel on the rests because the bottle is too wide to fit, and we didn't have any issues with a poi change.

Well, I have the gauntlet and it's very accurate and has a great shot count is amazing for its price point. I also agree on the field and on the move probably the urban Gamo will be a better choice for on the move pesting. I'm trying to convince my friend to buy the urban since I already have the gauntlet so we can have the best of both worlds. Good and Fair Video guys.

Really I haven't heard anybody really complaining about the urban. Maybe I will stop advising my friend about it, but for the price point, you really cannot beat the gauntlet. Since it seems a lot of people have purchased it because of the price and in that becoming popular I believe it will be the next 10 22 of air rifles. Yes, I agree right out of the box the puncher breaker will outperform the urban and the gauntlet. I do own a higher-end PCP air rifle, but I am really not ready to Tinker with it. The gauntlet will give me the opportunity to Tinker with a PCP and in that getting some experience before I work on higher end stuff.

Sorry that these air rifles do not meet your standards for some that are on a budget it's really the only way to go. Unfortunately, not all of us can own BMW, Mercedes Benz and so on. Some of us will just have to settle for an old rusty Ford that at least can run well. Bless are they who can afford the expensive air rifles.

The Gamo trigger is NOT adjustable without a longer screw. I don’t like that the Gauntlets barrel is not supported. The Gamo is a better gun- except for shot count; but with less power you get a better shot count as in the case of the Gauntlet - a no brainer.

Sabrina higgs I have the Gauntlet and it isn’t the easiest to pump from 2500 psi to 3000. I don’t know how much air the Urban needs for a full tank but thanks to the regulator in the Gauntlet you would only have to fill it to about 1900 psi to get the 24 “good shots” the Urban would have on a full tank.

Do the research. I have both rifles. The Gauntlet is Chinese and the build quality absolutely shows it. The urban is LITERALLY a made in England BSA rifle. Just research it in depth. Everything about the build of the urban is better. PLUS you can get a slip-in Huma regulator for them. DON'T believe the garbage hype about the gauntlet. It's an decent shooter with absolute garbage build quality. Just look at what BSA builds... bsaguns.co.uk/air-rifles/

Sorry guys but I have to pick you up on two maybe three things. 1. The Urban is extremely accurate at 25 yards but you only tested at 50. That is a little unfair as the Gauntlet is much more of a 50 yarder. 2. I don't know what Urban you have there but the last one I saw reviewed had a fully adjustable cheek piece! Two screws at the end of the butt pad to adjust it. A possible third thing is that you only covered weight and length, but overall handling and Pointability is what airgunners are looking for. Not only is the Gauntlet much longer and heavier it is also much bulkier! That's a big minus out in the brush or shooting in cramped conditions. Having said that I enjoyed your head to head!

I dont think the guantlet won... we all get flyers so i believe the .92 is a better group than .99, the adjustability? I gues the gauntlet has a couple small extra features but i think its crappy trigger makes it loose, it does rock the urbans world on shout count. I believe both rifles failed the sound test 100 db is not that great for a 24fpe rifle... heres the biggest issue for me guys (all this being said, i dont own or never have even touched iether) the gauntlet created a thunderstorm of hype, and certain rifles have been able too live up to it, but i see a ton of reviews of disappointment. It seem what we are getting mass produced has very little quality control. I havent heard anything bad about the urban, from most of the reviews i believe they were pleasantly surprised at its quality. I was on the gauntlet party wagon but i hopped off, maybe they clean up there products or if i want to start a project rifle ill hope back on

randy job I believe it’s because people’s words set the bar for the Gauntlet. People thought it could keep up with 800$ plus guns and get disappointed. I took the time to adjust the trigger and it’s not match grade as many would say but it is pretty good now. Overall it has an amazing price and I’m loving it as my first PCP. I have two videos up on it’s accuracy if you would like to check them out!

The Gauntlet is a fixer-upper gun that was my intentions when I bought it. It needs a lot of work and for me, that is the fun part, but for somebody that wants to buy something and have it work out of the box as intended yes the Gamo will be the choice. As far as the prey or pests they can't tell the difference.

Like I said before I purchased the Umarex as a project piece to work on. I knew it would have shortcomings and all the hype was b**sh*t but as long as it was accurate I can work with it and I am. Yes, it's heavy, but the type of hunting I do the weight does not bother me as much. I will head out to a permission, camp 1 to 2 hours and move and camp and so on. Most of the time I'm just enjoying nature and being in the outdoors and if I see something interesting and it's legal I take it down. If you out there stalking and moving Non-Stop yes get a lighter rifle.

Does the barrel on the Umarex really diverge from the stock and tank at such and angle? It certainly takes away from the overall visual impression; it looks...broken. The Umarex also looks like it would be unwieldy in the field for hunting. I just wish that the Urban was regulated - not so much for increased shot count, but just for consistency. I'd even be willing to give up some shots to know exactly where my pellet was going every time, which is really not possible with the constantly varying pressure of an unregulated PCP. Can a regulator be added to the Urban? If so, it looks like it would make an excellent squirrel/rabbit gun.
@airgundepot

The Urban is a fine airgun even without the regulation, the Gauntlet is fine but it is big due to the bottle on the front. What you're referring to as the barrel is the shroud over the barrel.

Hi Airgun Depot, Thanks for the video. The big question. If the Urban was regulated would it be better? I found out the following about the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is a modified QB 78T or QB 79 CO2 air rifle (Chinese) converted and slightly modified. In the mid 2000's, the Airgun forums are full of mod's for these guns making them excellent shooters up to 100 yards. Not bad for a $99 to $149 gun. Most of those bulletin boards are now gone because of videos and Facebook. A quick search found this on facebook (custom xs/qb78/79 airguns). This gun is a combination of paint ball gun parts (tank and regulator) and QB air rifle parts. Umarex took the work these forum airgunners did back then and put a new skin on the components. I would assume from the number of KZbin videos with modifications popping up for the Gauntlet. Umarex did not use the best components available so they can make a healthy profit on each one sold. A person would think a big company like Umarex would be able to assemble the best of these parts or have the improvements made to the components. Wondering what the price $$$ of that gun would be? Maybe in the near future we will find out? The incremental improvements over the next five years will lead to the "Gauntlet Extreme" for $999. Umarex could have at least made (used the mods already available) the trigger better!!!
@airgundepot
@airgundepot 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for reaching out to us. You're right that the Gauntlet is based to some extent on the QB platform. I wouldn't say it is necessarily a modified QB though. Yes, many of the features it has can be added to the basic QB. However, to modify a QB to get all of the features of the Gauntlet you would spend a lot more than $300. Also, the barrels on the QB rifles can be hit or miss, but the Umarex Gauntlet barrels are consistently accurate, very accurate in fact. The reason that Umarex can bring you all of these features at this price is not because they are cutting corners, but because they have the benefits of scale. They are a large enough company that they can make or commission parts much cheaper than smaller entities can, and still maintain high levels of quality. If it were regulated, would the Urban be better than the Gauntlet? That depends on what you are looking for. The Gauntlet tends to be more accurate, in my experience and from what I have seen from others, and it gets a lot more shots. But the Urban is a great gun, especially for the price, and if you can handle the lower number of shots, then I would strongly recommend it.
