I know I appreciate your videos. It guided me when I was redoing my 2 fold ragtop. I watched that series a couple of times. Keep the VW views up. I always enjoy shop videos, and just general beetle 60' and below information. I'm still learning and restoring my 1960 ragtop. So many 1960 only parts, like the ignition and turn signal. Thanks for all the videos! One day I'll be cruising the california coast in my 1960!

In 1972, the middle aged owner and I agreed on a price of 250 bucks for a nice decent blue 1960 ragtop beetle, if only dad had permitted me to buy that one at the time. But later that same year, dad did give me permission to get my first car, a red 1962 sunroof bug for $400. I was 16 going on 17. That $250 1960 would’ve been the better deal. Oh well. C’est la vie.

@@nonelost1I bought mine at 16 years old when I was in highschool junior. I saved up $1,100 for it. I bought in 2000. And kept it all this time. It had been stored away since 2004 and it wasn’t until 2020 that o had the itch to get it back on the road. So I started taking everything apart. It’s not painted and new rebuilt 1600cc engine and a new transmission.

Keep up the good work Chris. I bought my first Beetle new in 1963 and have owned a number of them in the early years. I just purchased a 1963 and enjoy watching your videos for information and advice. Thank you for doing an auction recap and I agree with you, the real action now days seems to be on BaT.

You're spot on regarding that oval Chris. Great car. I would probably leave it as is if I bought it. But in order to appeal to the market at large you need to embellish just a little. I'll be doing that with my 57.

That '63 two-toned Beetle (Blue/White), lowered with a swamp cooler on the window, belonged to a friend of mine here in Oregon. He sold it last summer - funny seeing it here.

There weren’t a lot of Volkswagens this year, your right on the percentages then and the tax for the Scottsdale , it seemed like everything was going lower, but Saturday all the big dollar cars a were huge numbers , it is an awesome event, you would enjoy it . I went on Wednesday and it still seemed crowded, but it’s also a big party.

In Ohio in the early ‘60s, a friend of my dad’s had a 1953 VW convertible bug. Dad had remarked that it was “in sad shape” at the time. But his friend got it running. His wife even made a quilted convertible top for it. The really sad thing is that I found out years later, that during the early 70s, college kids had chopped it up and turned it into some sort of sculpture. That car was rare when it was new!

This beetle has been listed for sale for the last 6+ months for $59k on various sites including oldbug… so he got close to his asking

He also has to pay a 10% auction fee, plus ship the bug there.

Oh wow. Yeah probably could have been had for an even better deal then over the past few months given those added expenses the seller had to pay to make the sale.

The oval is really nice but yes it’s missing something that catches your eye. I’m not one to show off so it would be perfect for me. I don’t like to be noticed.

53 oval just before it was zwitter i believe with oval dash and split window. The first oval, special car your right money has lost value so prices should be going up just to keep up with inflation and cost. Barret Jackson has went thru some good cars too fast and if your car is up your out of luck with no reserve.

Why not wait until the auction is finished to comment. Anyway, you say the word "purist" as if it's a dirty word. If you go on BAT there's no shortage of so-called "purists" keeping the hobby in-check and we owe them a debt of gratitude, especially 50-60 years down the road when it's even more difficult to find originality because of a lack of restoration parts and marginal workmanship. So I think you need to ask yourself, am I in the business for profit (selling a Beetle easier because you've changed the originality it came with) or are you in it for preservation of originality. Personally, I loath the burlap headliners and door card coverings. I don't call altering a Beetle's identity "art", I call it someone's own personal taste (1) is not original (2) and is more like custom (3). As more and more relics vanish and original ones are harder to find ("slamming" the suspension is in endless vogue) I prefer seeing them preserved and not customized for higher profit and an easier, quicker sale. To me, that's selling out for profit or wanting to be "dope" because your pans are dragging on the ground and you couldn't make a u-turn if your life depended on it. I appreciate your videos, just know some of us have been in the game much longer and aren't always going to agree on managing the life of a Volkswagen or someone else's very personal taste to sell.
