In Bioenergetic Shaking we shake our muscles to release neurotic holding patterns. Does shaking heal trauma? Shaking, vibrations, and cathartic release are all part of bioenergetics healing techniques but they need to be well understood so that it doesn't seem like a fairytale. Here I do my best to explain the benefits of Bioenergetic Shaking.

Free Follow-Along Bioenergetic Shaking and Vibration Video: • Shake Off Stress With ...
Vibrations (shaking) in our body are caused by an energetic charge in our neuromuscular system and are like the vibration occurring in an electrical wire when a current passes through it. Analogous to measuring the degree of voltage in a wire, the degree of vibration in a person’s body tells us what shape it is in.
In a body, “gross” vibrations (large and sporadic vibrations) are a sign that the excitation (or charge) is not freely flowing. Just like rapids in a river let us know that rocks are impeding the smoothness of the course, so too do these gross vibrations (shaking) show us that the current of excitation is flowing through spastic muscles that are most likely in a state of chronic tension (Neurotic Holding Patterns). When the tensions are released or the muscles relax, these vibrations become “finer,” hardly perceptible on the surface and we can even experience them as a delightful purr.
To test what shape our body is in, the postures in bioenergetics put muscles, or muscle groups, under a degree of controlled, intelligent stress. This will lead certain muscles in our bodies to naturally shake. Through these vibrations, we will be releasing neurotic holding patterns and begin to feel muscles in our bodies that have become “dead zones.” Focusing on feeling our bodies during the vibrations and breathing deeply as learned in the last module will increase the level of vital energy in our system, thereby supporting the release to go deeper.
Our objective during these stressful exercises is to keep these natural vibrations going even as the excitement (charge) builds, and the stress increases. To accomplish this, our egos need to be unafraid to go with our body’s involuntary responses. In time, we will be increasing our body's tolerance for excitation and pleasure while noticing that the vibrations are becoming finer. The result will be that we are no longer bound by chronic muscular holding patterns and their corresponding psychological/emotional manifestations will be experienced less and less. This will result in bodily movements and behavior that have a high degree of spontaneity and yet are coordinated and effective, demonstrating a high quality of natural grace.
In his book “The Way to Vibrant Health,” Alexander Lowen states that “One can only achieve grace by increasing the motility of the body, then infusing it with self-awareness to yield a high degree of self-possession. The mark of a graceful and gracious person is his self-possession.” This means that through performing these vibratory exercises, we will also develop the corresponding psychological attitude of being gracious. This is achieved through an internal feeling of unity and integrity that leads to what Lowen calls “self-possession.” Through this state of being, we will begin to behave with a natural sincerity in thought and action, which is very graceful and attractive.

Great video! Shake it off (literally) can bring healing. My mind was blown hearing the classic example of how prey animals that escape a hunt, will go and basically shake off the trauma then hop up and be fine. Looking forwards to more of your in-depth coverage and exercises as you continue this series.

Thank you very much Alex. And yes, it's quite amazing! I saw a few Alexander Lowen's book in the K21 reading list. His books are filled with tons of insights like this. I also highly recommend them.

Hey man, really like your new videos on bioenergetics. I have felt the changes in vibration myself, especially in my legs. My arms still shake a bit spastically, I guess because I still haven't quite found my way with anger. I have (weirdy perhaps) found that there is a lot of overlap and similiarites between bionenergetic principles and christian teaching. With that I mostly mean the things that Alexander Lowen wrote on the topics of surrender, gracefulness, learning to trust and overall just healing one's full capacity to love. My mind just saw those things as different expressions of trusting and surrendering to God. I recognize of course that there are also a lot incompatibilities, certainly in the field of sexuality. While Alexander Lowen similarly to Christianity affirms that sex is an expression of love and has it's proper place within love, he doesn't have an overly moralistic hangup on marriage. I have found within myself a lot of internal conflict with the two positions, since I often feel that Christianity has a very sex negative view on things and places overly formal restrictions on human relationships that I feel should flow freely and spontaneously. Do you have any thoughts on that? Keep up the good work, as I wrote elsewhere, your videos help me out a lot. Blessings to you!

That is so cool man! I also found so many similarities and at this point I think that this therapy can be so helpful for many Christians in need of healing. I've been entering into Healing the Whole Person Ministry through the JP2 Healing Center (Great Book: Be Healed by Bob Schuchts) and been learning so much about how to integrate this into the Church's mission to heal the sick. Additionally, I don't believe we can live a life of abundance, a full Christian life, when we have all these stuck traumas in our bodies. When it comes to the morality of sex, I subscribe to the Theology of the Body, which holds the dignity of the person as top priority, and I believe to be very sex positive. I still believe that there is so much more that the Church could do when it comes to helping people develop in sex affirming ways (especially young people) while at the same time not subscribing to the beliefs of the day...which by the fruits, we see is clearly not working for individuals, family, or society. I subscribe to Alexander Lowens body-mind therapy because he was a psychoanalyst and a physician, and I've noticed how deep his understanding was of the mind-body connection, and plus his methods work wonders. When it comes to sex, I think he is on point that we should all have the ability to orgasm fully and that requires us to be free of neurotic holding patterns and to surrender to love and to our spouse. I don't think that contradicts anything in the Christian worldview. When it comes to the formal restrictions, I have come to believe that they are filled with wisdom and truth. As a man, if we allow our relationships to flow freely and spontaneously, how do you think that would turn out? Probably wasting our time and energy having sex with multiple girls, accidentally impregnating one or two, having abortions, not following our path because we are addicted to our lusts and female validation, maybe getting into stupid relationships that never should have happened etc. Kind of like many men do today. However, if we live by a code, and strive to be rational with the choices we make in relationships, we will first focus on becoming excellent and becoming a man that can attract and lead a high quality woman. Then we will keep our eyes open for that wife worthy woman who will be our compliment to our lives, who will ultimately help us to succeed further, will give us immortality through bearing children, and we can trust her to teach our children correctly and be loyal to us. Sadly, most people don't think this is possible or that those women exist. Not true. I'm not sure if that answers the question but that's what I believe at the moment. I should look more into Lowen's writing on sex but as of now, I don't remember anything being completely off base.

@@HealingHouse88 Hey man, thank you so much for your detailled response. As a total newcomer to the faith, who still struggles with some of the theology and commandments, responses like these help me out a ton. I have heard many good things about the Theology of the Body but I have to yet read it myself. I definitely agree, that the modern world with it's sexual revolution which supposedly was to set us sexually free hasn't worked out at all and has only left us in chaos. Both Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen saw this form of sexual expression as just another side of most people's neurosis, since the compulsive sex-seeking stemmed out of their inability to orgasm fully. Bookwise, I recommend Love and Orgasm by Alexander Lowen, in which he goes into great detail about our current sexual malaise, of course from his bioenergetic perspective. Additionally, I also recommend The Murder of Christ by Wilhelm Reich. In that book Wilhelm Reich offers his take on the life and teachings of Jesus, while also offering some pretty penetrating insight into modern society. It's by no means a traditional christian book, and some of the content might even be a bit shocking and offensive, but I have nonetheless to be found it very interesting. I guess I just don't want to admit to myself, that some self-restraint is necessary when in pursuit of a virtuous life and that in the end it will be worth it, for one's future wife and family. There are still some things that I'm wrestling with but I don't want to leave the path because of it. I would love to see the church tackle these issues more openly and offer more sound advice to young people, such as myself, so that we may all come to true freedom. Again, thank you and keep it coming!

Welcome to the Kingdom, brother. I've truly found that the more I sacrifice, the more I submit, and the more I "lose myself," God fills me up 100 fold with all types of unexpected graces. I am still in awe at how the words of God are a lived truth, a living word, not just wisdom. And when I reflect on it, I come to tears remembering how good our Father is and how much he wants to be with us, delights in us, and loves us so immensely. It took me a while to accept that love but now I'm praying that everyone can accept and experience it. Thank you for the book suggestion. I just put it on my queue to buy. You're not the first person who mentioned the sexual component in Lowen's work so I think it would be wise for me to learn more about it. Throughout the last year I've been learning a lot about New Age practices and was testing Bioenergetics so see if it was New Age, or not. Basically i don't want to put anything out there that could open unwanted spiritual doors in people's lives. After all that learning, I'm confident that Lowen's work is safe. Wilhelm Reich though gives me some pause so I doubt I'll read his book. And I totally get the resistance and the wrestling. That's a good place to be though. Keep wrestling and asking questions. The answers will be revealed to you when you're seeking for them and you're open to learning. Keep it up my man. This is a marathon, not a sprint! And it is said, "It is hard to live as a Christian, but it is easy to die as one." I pray you do the hard things so you can die in peace!
