hi all! I am going to be monitoring and responding to comments so Tar can make sure she is taking care of herself and not being triggered by any comments. I also want to remind anyone who is struggling with health anxiety, or any type of mental health for that matter, to take caution before reading comments. if you worry talk of mental health might trigger you in any way don't read below🤍 -C

I’m in tears watching this because I relate so much from Y2K anxiety to all the ER visits to not wanting to live anymore. I know how it feels to know something’s wrong and being written off. After covid, the dizziness and high heart rate really hit the fan. I had 15 ER visits, multiple cardiology, neurology, a trip to Vanderbilt autonomic clinic, I was able to discover that I have dysautonomia (POTS, orthostatic hypotension), MCAS, GAD, PTSD. They would send me home from the ER because everything was normal but I knew it wasn’t! Finally, I landed at the ER with a DR who said I think you have POTS. After fighting, I got a tilt table test and I got my diagnosis!! I’ve learned that being upright, certain foods, heat, stress, etc causes tachycardia and hypotension. I was dizzy because I wasn’t getting enough blood to my brain. I also have been diagnosed more specifically with hyperPOTS. My sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive and I feel things so much more than others due to having way too much adrenaline. My flight or flight has been in overdrive since I was little. I felt SO validated and not crazy. Im so glad that I found this episode. 🤗

While I'm not a pp who suffers from health anxiety, I do suffer from anxiety and depression and this was just what I needed. Thank you, BOTH, so much for sharing your experiences with us. It truly means the world. On a less serious note, when Tar said probably at the end that SENT me 😂. Perfect way to end a heavy conversation! Love you both and all the pp's out there ❤🫶🏼

Its so refreshing to hear your coping mechanisms be GROUNDING techniques for health anxiety. When i’ve talked to people in the past they always say, “go outside, go for a walk get fresh air” while that might help many people, the LAST thing i want to do when im convincing myself im having a heart attack is to go do physical activity LOL. So your grounding techniques were really refreshing :) thank you for being so open and honest taryn!

taryn: spends most of her life being terrified of something going wrong in her body also taryn: feels the calmest she's ever been, having the time of her life when something DOES go wrong in her body xDD I laughed so hard at this, it's ridiculous but also so true. That's what they say, people with anxiety feel the calmest in dangerous situations 'cause their brains expect them to be in danger all the time, almost like danger is their comfort zone. Plus, that's the same thing with OCD. Intrusive thoughts would feel very scary, uncomfortable or wrong but actual, real health concerns wouldn't. The way our brains work is so strange) Thank you for this episode, it was very helpful and reassuring❤

What a great episode! :D Thanks for sharing your experiences Taryn :) As for the gossip, dating apps can be really tough. I also get attached to matches, which makes it hard when rejection happens, but ideally it's best to not take it personally nor take a confidence hit from it. Keep at it and it could be worth it in the long run!

This is so relatable. One time I almost chocked on cheese and ever since then, I have issues eating certain things and I feel like im constantly scanning my throat to justify the feeling of chocking. Same with heart, Ive just finished a round of tests for my heart just because i felt my body was being weird.. I know rationally im fine and healthy but when y brain takes over, it’s unbearable. It is so stressful and painful and scary when you are going through it. Thank you for talking about this.

Its rare to hear about someone with health anxiety being so unconcerned with drinking alcohol, being tidy, and washing themselves. So im glad I got to hear this perspective. I have health anxiety but not on the ocd spectrum - Im very dedicated to cleanliness and avoiding everything thats unhealthy, but because of the lack of ocd, I get questioned even by doctors early on when I first meet them. I wash my hands around 15 times a day, but theres always a reason and it isnt obsessive, so even if it is a consistent stage of anxiety being focused on that aswell, Ive struggled to get help myself. I shower 2 times a day and I regurarly clean my house in the way most peole do maybe twice a year, its exhausting but I can skip it, so not really obsessive- but theres bias in the medical realm, so thank you for sharing, as a person who dont at all fit the percieved notion of how a person with health anxiety acts and feel. It was so libearting hearing about how you dont even manually clean your bodyparts, Im pretty horrified (for me, no judging sis) but its so calming to hear from someone who dont at all act like a petaon with health anxiety would. Since so many of us aren't getting help at all until we lose our jobs and can't have a normal life due to this. Going back to wash our hands 78 times before reaching the parking lot to leave for work. Theres suffering before tjat stage as you know. I dont know if its allowed if it constitutes as PR, but if its ok : would you mind telling me what clinic diagnosed you? I think it woyld be helpful to so many people, its so difficult getting help at all - I'm not in your country, so I cant change clinics, but it would be nice to meet medical staff with that level of understanding These things are really not separate, germ phobia and health anxiety - you can have the first without the second , but they are intertwined to some degree when you are diagnosed, as you and I are Taryn.

Hey Taryn, sorry to hear about your anxiety trouble. I was struck by this when I was 21 and in military training. I had absolutely no idea what was going on, and spent many hours in health clinics. For what it’s worth, I will share some advice that may help, pieces of which you are already doing. These things helped me. First, don’t deny your symptoms, whether they are being created within yourself and visited upon yourself, they are just as real as those that come from outside. Remember these symptoms, and realize what each one feels like, and that nothing ever came of it, therefore this is safe to ignore. Know that This Too Shall Pass, and no matter how bad you feel in this moment, it will inevitably fade into memory. Finally, know truly that you have a wife who loves you, and many friends, all these people lend you strength and commitment to move on, through this trial to happier times.

As someone with health anxiety, I’ve one way of coping it by thinking “if 7 days go by and I’m still feeling these things, then I’ll worry” and that has prevented me from going to the ER so many times. Most times those things aren’t there anymore and when they are, I can confidently tell doctors I’m feeling it for at least a week and it’s not going away (making me feel I am taken seriously)

it just takes time, practice, and a lot of talking it through. tar being so open with me really helps me understand how to be a good partner in these moments. also please keep in mind when you are watching the podcast you are generally seeing us both at our best. yes we try to be transparent and share our flaws/struggles/short comings in our relationship but you are hearing us share what we intend to do. and intentions dont always come across. im not perfect. im not always patient. im not always gentle. when I am having a tough time and cant focus and tar needs me I have to battle putting my issues aside. I think we are both getting really good at knowing who really needs the attention in that moment and the other one sucks it up temporarily to help the other. but this is definitely not always the case 🤍 -C
