Hi! I tried making these but I think my mandolin slices are slightly too thick, so the chips are crispy but thick. What mandolin do you have?

Just a tip for those that aren't very experienced with using a mandoline slicer: they often come with a hand-guard, which I would HIGHLY recommend you use. Speaking from personal experience, it is very easy to slip your fingers/hand and cut yourself rather badly with these devices. You can also use cut-resistant gloves if you don't like the hand guard.

I watched and remembered I have half a sweet potato in the fridge! I used a peeler to make the slices, need to see if the times apply the same for sweet potato as beetroot. Thanks!

The great thing about using beets is you can't see the blood in the food after you run your fingers through the slicer ☺

Oooh- you got me Chetna- I will try to be really good and have these beetroot chips next time - instead of potato chips. I do have an air fryer so I would just spray them with olive oil and lightly sprinkle with salt (have to try black pepper too) afterwards. Eat with a simple ricotta or cottage cheese mixed with sour cream dip. Of course I will have to cut the beetroot naked, wear gloves, wipe and wash all the tiny splatters over me, the bench top and floor as I go. Will be worth it to make a large batch. Thankyou. May every teenager in the world learn this healthy recipe and how to patiently prepare it.

We've tried the bought version of these, which have parsnip and other veg in them, think making fresh ourselves would be better. Just manage to get a bag of gram flour from our local store (got to get another cauliflower now) and noticed it has 21% protein, the best bread flour only has about 15%, was wondering if you have ever tried making bread with it. I've used chickpea flour, channa or gram flour, for pancakes as part of the flour and I've also used it for a vegan white sauce, which is pretty good if you have no milk in the house. It's a great way to hide some vitamins in a lot of baked items.

Hi Chetna, thank you for your video. I tried making it and I didn’t achieve the crisp factor. I think it’s the size of the slices, even on the thinnest setting, my mandoline still cuts them too thick. Can you recommend a good one, or share the brand and model of the one you own?

So brave! I am afraid of hot ovens, so I would have to take the tray out and try to flip all the chips with a fork. What is that thing she uses to thin slice the beets? Never seen one before this video.

They come in all different varieties, not sure what brand she is useing but the slicer is called a Mandoline Slicer here is a link to the one I have, it includes other blades so you can also make homemade fries (chips) and has different settings for the blades. I presume you are slicing raw beetroot not pre-boiled beetroot as you did not mention its state. Might be worth saying for dummies like me. They look great will have a go today, 120°C what is that in old Gas Reg? Thanks, love your cooking. Richard

Food with Chetna Thanks for your quick response, I tried it today sliced the raw beetroot on my mandolin, perhaps not quite as thin as yours, followed all your instructions. 120°C is only gas Mark 1 yes? Very cool, did the 15 and then the 10 minutes, left to cool forever still soggy, So total disaster. Frustrated!

You probably could but I cant tell you how many days it will take as I have not used that method myself.

Tried this method more than once. Somehow they aren't as crisp as when deep fried. They turn out rubbery due to the less intense surrounding heat generated than deep frying. The beetroot slice would have crumbled into tiny pieces with a crackling sound if they were really crispy Watch the deep-fried beetroot chips videos to notice this.. The crackling sound is probably made by someone else in the background.
