I remember back in 2014, our favorite DI got selected to DI for USN officer recruits. He left right after the crucible so we didn't get to graduate with him. His last day with us, he marched us to morning chow one last time and did one of these slow melodic marches. We leaned back so hard that god could look down at our faces and our heels were so crisp and loud that the devil himself hid in a cave in Afghanistan. It was awesome. Everybody has several "peak" moments in boot camp -- physically, mentally, everything. Our COD moment was in San Diego coming back from evening chow. We were, for that moment in time, a perfect drilling machine the likes of which had never been seen anywhere. All our senior could say after we did our facing movement in front of our squad bay was, "Well, no shit!"

My brother and I enlisted in the MARINES IN 1975 . The Marines offered us a challenge that broke our physical and mental state completely down. The second phase slowly they began to not rebuild our confidence, but built our confidence to take on any challenge that crossed our path . Today we are retired MASTER GUNNERY SERGEANTS . As I watch this video I’m reminded of my Drill Instructor yelling aline and cover set your heels down that is your beat to my cadence. Be proud MARINES

That is the rear of 1st Battalion barracks at Parris Island. Easily identified by the swamps edge. Old video. Green BDUs. In 1974 I was a recruit in PLT 183. First week of training the DI asked if anyone wanted to call home for free. Most of us stepped forward. He marched us down to that very pathway in this video. There we stood in formation facing the swamp and for some ten minutes we all in unison called out "home, home, home" to the open sky.

I was in 1st Battalion in 1982. For the life of me I can't remember anything behind the barracks that even remotely looked like that. The "pit" at the barracks was easily 3 times the size of that one.

We didn't have a "pit". When the DI wanted to punish us, it was wherever we happened to be standing at the time. Grass, asphalt or concrete. No sandy pits. If you use Google Satellite you can see the edge of the swamp at low tide in the rear of the 1st Battalion barracks. @@ricks3313

@inezzbeadz it will be the single worst and the greatest decision he has ever made. Also in case you were never taught bu your son, deployment is something he does for roughly 6-8 months overseas, and I know you didn't mean anything by it but you shouldn't tell anyone especially the internet when your Marine is about to deploy. That's something you should reserve for family. It's just a security thing.

Agreed. Embarrassing to me to see Marines "Goose Stepping" like WW2 Germans. I get approving comments from non-Marines on this comment chain because they just do not know. But we Marines do not Goose Step. We drive our heels with a full smooth 30 " step. yes.... but those marines are stepping and stomping. Keep to the drill manual. Those Recruits are not yours to toy with. They are all our Marines, entrusted to you to mold into Basically Trained Marines. Come on SDI SSgt Bohoroquez.....especially in Basic Training.

FFS They are not Goose Stepping, they are Knee Jacking. Or what you Marines call it "Thunder Stepping" Either fucking way it's a cadence and their doing it in good fun. To many people are scared of Goose Stepping bc of the Nazis. And they didn't actually goose step. Lol. Technically by modern terms Goose Step is made up and is a Fucked twisted version of the Roman Goose Step just like the Nazi Swastika is a Fucked Twisted Version of the Indian Swastika. The Roman "Goose Step" is the Marine "Thunder Heels" and the Army "Knee Jack" in its original Form. The reason why it's called the Goose Step is bc it looks like how a Goose takes it's Step. What the Nazis used looks like your bouncing of your feet and is very similar to the Commies of the USSR post WW2. Either way. It looked cool and I'm pretty sure that DI wouldn't have done it if it wasn't authorized.

When I was in BCT, my Senior Drill Sergeant was a prior service Marine scout sniper & infantry man with multiple combat deployments, & my platoon Drill Sergeant was a prior service Marine infantry man that transitioned into the Army infantry. They would make us perform D&C to this standard. Needless to say I went through Marine boot camp in the Army 😭💯 kinda crazy bc I went for the Marines but the recruiter was an idiot so I went to the Army recruiter who had a few more brain cells, & now after being in for a little while, I plan on transitioning into the Marines after my contract 🖤🇺🇸

I served in the USMC from 84-88. I'm gonna tell you to stay in the Army or go Air Force. There are more opportunities in the Army and Air Force. The USMC doesn't give a crap about your prior service. They'll treat you as if you've never served at all. You'll lose rank if you go USMC. If you leave the Army a Sgt E5 you'll have to go through boot camp in the USMC. You only leave boot camp an E3. The Army advances you to E4 automatically. In the USMC E4 is a Corporal, NCO. You have to work your butt off to promote to Corporal. Why start over the hard way? Too many BS games in the USMC. If you get into any trouble, they don't forget it or let you redeem yourself. You have to walk on water to advance Good luck!

You don't transition from any branch into the USMC. You will have to go to boot camp again if you join the USMC. That goes for anyone. Even if you are an officer in any other branch and join the USMC, you WILL go through boot camp. If you are prior service USMC, you can join any branch without having to go through their basic training.

It's a fucked up mess is what it is and obviously there is time for some more relevant training. I'm all about drill, but if there is time to teach multiple ways to march, then bootcamp is either now too long, or not robust enough. Much of what is taught during MCT can be done during basic. I find this style of marching to be very offensive due to the history of this imagery.

Back in the 80’s when I was newly assigned to Rifle Range BAS, my HM2 was good friends with a lot of DI’s. So he knew when they would be doing drills like this at one of mainside BN’s and we would go out after sick call, watch/listen to the drills. Six months later assigned to 3rd Marines HQ BN. 8404 😊

Navy 1971 we had the best cadence on the grinder at Bainbridge MD. Its just a ghost base now but you can still hear us march.

After I became an Officer, I missed doing cadence with platoon, or company size units. I loved the drills at MCRD San Diego back in the 80's. I remember being called out to do cadence because my OIC, CWO-04 Trout knew I was leaving the next week to go to OCS. Best officer I have ever met in 20+ years. He had been a SSgt during Vietnam. He never cared about your rank, just your ability to do the job.
