Ever wondered how a Hearthstone card is painted? This video breaks it down into 3 steps with info on what kind of task description the artist gets, to what colors to use, and how much detail to add.
In the assignment the card was called "Nature's Defense Spell" so you'll hear me refer to it as that in this video. Once the card was released, they changed the name to "Call The Guardians".

I really appreciate hearing about the feedback process and steps you went through with art direction - so often we only ever see the finished piece (in published art, portfolios, etc) and I love getting to see all the thumbnails and iterations that built up to that. Balancing the efficiency to stay on budget while still putting in my best work for that time spent is something I struggle with, but I'm starting to realize that that's a constantly evolving thing. I really do get some inspiration from Blizzard, especially with Warcraft. I created a character sheet for my main from WOW. It forced me to study further into the human muscles, especially for men.

This is very insightful. It is always nice to see a glimpse of the inner workings of the profession. I bet I'm not alone when I say I would love to work on a Heartstone card. I noticed that a lot of concept artists also double dip as full on illustrators, doing splash art, card art etc. This is the path I want to follow as well, as I do not yet know which one I prefer (likely both). For a beginner, I wonder if it is a good idea to focus the portfolio on either or both? Will I be in situations thinking I should have put more concept work in my portfolio for a concept job I am applying to, or will I be glad that I spent the time working on full on illustrations that make me look more versatile? Something tells me the answer will depend on the job.
