On the topic of trills: Anybody got tips on how to get the trills in 3rd movement of moonlight sonata sounding strong? I mean the ones that appear at bar 30 and 32. You are playing octaves at the same time. This is in my opinion one of the trickiest parts of the whole damn sonata and even after many years of playing it I can't figure this out.

7:17 is so me lol.. I have a bad habit of doing things when I was learning/practicing every time I perform, like scratching, adjusting glasses for no reason and worst of all...reaching for a beer on top of the piano. So any tips or advice to get rid of these bad habits would be much appreciated. Oh and dont hate on 2 3 trills.. fingering is fingering as long as you get the job done 😉🤣

It is important to play with a shirt on. Without a shirt, absent hot climate, body temperature decreases, which leads to unnecessary tension throughout the playing mechanism. Additionally, goosebumps may form in surprising places, which creates distractions for the pianist, taking the eyes away from the keyboard and onto one’s epidermis. Lastly, skin-on-skin may occur between the inner arms and the ribcage, which causes additional friction compared to clothes-on-clothes, and which can also slow down the playing mechanism and create fire hazard.
@markoquendo6758 ай бұрын

@frazzledude8 ай бұрын
It is a good idea to practice trills with 2/3 because there might be situations where it will be helpful. In Chopin's etude in thirds, for example, it is much easier to play the repeating thirds in the opening bars if you have a good 2/3 trill.

as a beginner pianist im impressed with chalamet's performance here, but after watching you demonstrating the melody it looks much simpler than in chalamet's version. is it because u played it simpler or because chalamet played it more complicated?
@katttttt8 ай бұрын
My trills are probably similar to his trills. And I'm wondering, does it just come with time that you are able to move your fingers in a trill as fast as e.g. Annick? It looks impossible for me😂
@frazzledude8 ай бұрын
There are a couple of pointers that are useful. First, make sure your hand is completely relaxed. Start slowly, and don't increase the speed if you feel your hand or arm tensing up. Second, use the minimum amount of motion necessary to play the trill evenly. Don't let your fingers lift off of the keys. Wasted motion makes trills slower and harder to play. In connection with this, don't try to learn and practice trills on an upright piano. Always use a grand piano that has a quick, responsive action. The reason for this is that an upright piano action does not have a "double escapement". The keys on an upright piano must come almost all the way up before the note can be repeated. A grand piano's action has repeat levers which make it possible to repeat a note after the key comes up only a little way. Third, practice different fingerings. The Thalberg trill, named after pianist Sigismund Thalberg, is a good way to play trills. The fingering for it is: 1-3-2-3. The Thalberg fingering makes for smoother, more even trills than using just two fingers.
@xevivr8 ай бұрын
@@frazzledudewhat if I've digital piano not grand piano ? BTW love ur tip
@frazzledude7 ай бұрын
@@xevivr It depends on the particular digital piano. The top of line digital piano is called a "hybrid" digital piano because it has a true piano action that triggers optical sensors instead of hammers hitting strings. A hybrid digital piano even has weights that simulate the feel of dampers going up and down. My personal favorite digital piano action is the Kawai grand feel 3, although Yamaha and other digital piano brands also have a good action. A Kawai CA99 would be an excellent digital piano to practice trills on. Other digital pianos may or may not be good for practicing trills.

I wonder if they had a consultant on set for this. Probably not. He’s supposed to be a sort of classical music prodigy in the movie (translating music more so than actually playing it). In fact that scene he is playing Bach as played by Liszt. He’s flirting in this scene which is why he is so dramatic. I took piano lessons for years and didn’t really like it (turns out i am double jointed). When I saw him play in this scene my first thought was “Wrists up!” That was my clue that he might have just learned that piece but isn’t a real/serious player (of the piano lol).

The movie is great. Highly recommended! In the scene you’re referring to Elio wants to impress Oliver, and show off a little bit. Hence crossing the hands makes a lot of sense. It just looks cool. I also thought that his fingers were a little bit too flat at times… but the fingering seems to be the bigger „problem“ here.

There are those law enforcement types who think that the Trill, who think that the bombast that can be brought out of the pianoforte, turns a person who has nothing to do with the actual scene of the crime into something that has nothing to do with what you could possibly be listening to on any publicly available radio station. I think people talking about what's on the radio are Pferde. They have been talking about so many things constantly nonstop they are hoarse, as they think they are just the ones with the nutritious words for the radio if they are more directly referred to the scene of the crime and its incidentals and can properly talk it up. It's the Bad News Bears all the way. If you can't find anything else in the radio, how many people just decided to stop any attempt to be relevant or engaging at all? Anyway. There are those Antarctic penguins who don't really want anything else in the radio, constantly configuring the focus for those Happy Feet. When Pferdinand and Isabella of Spain sponsored Christopher Columbus they brought their horses to the territory of the United States and created the inspiration of the Ford Mustang.

Antique’s comments about his playing are fine. But the piece he’s playing has been bastardized into something that I guess the filmmakers thought would look virtuosic and flashy, when in fact it is supposed to light and elegant, and not particularly difficult. It is an Aria by Bach from his “Capricio over the departure of his beloved brother,” one of Bach’s earliest known compositions,,written at age 19 on the occasion of, yes, the departure of his brother, who was leaving for military service. It would have been performed on harpsichord, so all that thumping and pounding would have been totally useless and inappropriate. Well informed pianists would know this. The crosshanded stuff is not part of the original score; instead, the right hand has this octave motif that is easily performed by the right hand alone. I guess it looks more impressive this way.
