Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I'm happy to see so many of you found this useful! If you ever want to pop in and say hi, check out my Twitch.tv channel and let me know you found me from here, I'd love to play some Hearts of Iron 4 for you!: www.Twitch.tv/MahDryBread Oh yeah and if you stopped watching less than a minute in because you got confused by a front line, just watch a few more seconds and you'll get to the part where I say I'll show you how to do that in great detail, later in the video. Yes, I had to write this part in 5 years after the video came out, because for 5 straight years I've had comments of people pausing and complaining about "The line thing". It's kinda funny, search through the comments by newest, you'll see them. If you can't make it a full minute into the 35 minute grand strategy game tutorial without pausing, saying you don't understand, and giving up, then I can't really help you. There is no way you could understand the game in the first minute of the video, it's cool. Just keep watching, absorb what you can, and it will start to make sense in time. No one learns a grand strategy game in under a minute. Now don't give up on yourself! You can figure this game out, it's not rocket science. You'll be having fun with it before you know it!

Bc I don’t know much about it but it affects supply and attrition, the more units you have packed into one territory, the faster you’ll run out of supply and the faster they will get tired. That’s why when you fight on a bridge when you outnumber the enemy 10 to 1 you will most likely lose. It all depends on your divisions combat width but I barely know about that stuff it’s best to watch a video about this. I hope I helped clear some stuff up

Trying to figure out this game has kind of given me an appreciation for the people that actually led these countries and armies in actual history. If it's this difficult in a video game that, as complicated as it is, is only a fraction of what would go into it all in real life, then I can't even imagine being a world leader or general or something like that in WWII, or really any era..
@Terrex1236 жыл бұрын
You are correct that as complex as paradox games can be, they are nothing compared to the actual experience of that level of responsibility. The average person has no idea what actually goes into conducting a war... from any side, doesn't matter. To organize a war, the amount of preparation, manpower, workforce, trade/commerce considerations, politics, logistics, strategy, tactics, economics, are just a few of the variables that have to be contended with. Going to war is probably the most monumental and massive undertaking that humans can organize. Don't forget beyond that, all these guys were human too. They had family's with drama and relationship issues, depression, drug abuse, and all the normal difficulties of human life. Most people have trouble balancing their full time 40 hour work week with everything else. You begin to realize just how committed and engrossed in it all a man would have to be; to be a major leader in historical events like this... just... insane.

@serendipitousslim15295 жыл бұрын
To be fair, games like these, while simplifying everything, still put you in the seat of the ultimate micromanager. Leaders like Stalin and Hitler in real life weren’t picking which things to research, or hand picking which factories will produce what. All of the things you do in this game as one person, in real life, are ordained by entire bureaucracies. While obviously it isn’t any easier in real life either, you at least have your one role that you do, and leave the rest to everybody else.

@tsdobbi6 жыл бұрын
well you dont need a video for that. Until the new navy update comes out, there is literally no reason to build anything else but battleships and carriers. Unless you just need to quickly get coverage for a naval invasion, then just build some subs.
@aztekenen16 жыл бұрын
navy will change with the next update so it wont happen. but till then, as a navy heavy nation (america/england/japan) you just want to poop out carriers first, battleships second. then you need some cruisers for aa protection/screening and plenty of destroyers to soak up damage for your better ships. use tiny destroyer groups to protect trade routes from submarines. and build submarines if you want to take out a trade route, in stealth. a good composition standard to follow is 4 carriers, 4 battleships, 16 light cruisers 8 heavy cruisers and 24 destroyers. but you can always change it a bit if you struggle. just remember that bigger ships generally are stronger due to armor and range, and carrier wins against it all. but needs protection. just try to remember the function of ship types like this: carriers bomb all to death but need protection, battleships are tough ships that destroy all within range but needs protection from air and torpedos, heavy cruisers are a cheap man's battleship with a jack of all trades role (can be used to do damage but also screen), light cruisers kill destroyers, enemy air and do screening. and destroyers are cheap ships to sacrifice and screen all other ships. and can kill submarines. - dont use submarines for naval battles unless you are just trying to spam sea dominance to get a port invasion across :). just stick to intercepting and killing cargo/transport ships enroute :)

I had that same worry when I bought it, but I think it was worth every penny. I've got over 400 hours on it and love it! I found it shockingly easy to learn despite looking daunting.

Highly addictive, likely you'll get frustrated at playing as you put a lot of hours into a playthrough but it falls apart because you've made a mistake early on. I get addicted, play loads and burn out. No worries as you can come back. 👍🏻

Good video. Helped cement a few things about the game that didnt make much sense before. Would be lovely if we could get a video on how to manage our different resources. Dos and Donts of prodcution and manufacturing as well. Im still struggling to understand how that works. How bad a deficit in a resource is. What can I do about it. How best to used the civilian and military factories.

Thank you! I haven't watched the video yet, but I've been REALLY struggling. I've tried two playthroughs: one as America and one as France. With America, I didn't make my first military action until Oct. 1943, and I was wiped out instantly and the entirety of Europe and Asia was conquered by the Axis. With France, I was wiped out in the opening days of the joint German-Italian invasion. This game is brutal, man. I haven't watched the video yet, but thank you for dedicating the time for this!

Actually Germany in 1936 was allied to China.
@MahDryBread6 жыл бұрын
Kind of yes, kind of no. In the game they aren't. Sometimes Paradox takes small liberties with historical accuracy for the sake of...well oddly enough, historical accuracy. For instance EU4 starts in 1444. At that time Muscovy was a vassal of the Golden Horde, but the Golden Horde had become so weak that Muscovy was a vassal in name only. To represent this in EU4, they're just not a vassal. The Germany/China alliance is very much the same way. Yes Germany had generals in China to help modernise their military, but the alliance was so shaky by that point that it may as well not be in the game, especially considering it was never enforced in real life.
@dams68296 жыл бұрын
Mah-Dry-Bread - Gameplay & Streams! I get your point and thanks to responding so quick on more than month old video. And Sino German cooperation had bigger impact and actually helped China while Japan German alliance... not so much. Anyways thanks for answering me. Means alot.

@The PlowingWater Eh they did not try to protect German colonies. They joined the war against Germany in 1917 to gain back Qingdao which was Germany colony occupied by Japan.

Fantastic video by the way. I started watching 2 other KZbin tutorials, but they were awful. I like how you didn't get lost in the details, but gave good overviews first, and good that you didn't try to cover EVERYTHING, but kept some things for other videos. It's also good that you didn't waste time explaining things like we're total idiots or noobs, especially to Paradox games. This was the perfect tutorial for me.
