The party in the desert is also a metaphor for the war itself (in this case the Iraq War circa ‘03). How its affects are undersold and also how warmongers and arms dealers rush to the party.

@jip5889 I know what you mean, though, to be fair she does say that it's a political song. She adds that the meaning can be broader. She's analysing it from a psychology perspective. And, there's something in her analysis; the political point of the song is to shake us out of ignorance and make us confront .... Well, power. The personal is the political and vice-versa as they say 😉

To know the unending feeling of anger and helplessness without having someone else to point the finger at. If you think you’d be able to affect the course of this awful empire from the inside, you’d be very quickly disappointed.

Amazing how you said “use metal music to shift your mindset” because I grew up a classically trained violist, played in an orchestra and could play all the string instruments very well. At the same time I was listening to KISS, Motley Crue, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and so on. This was when I was around 9/10 years old and I had a crush on Stevie Nicks. A couple years later I discovered bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer and the various metal bands of the 80s. I remember that the darker the music the more I was willing to listen to and deal with things thus making me “happy”. Doesn’t work anymore but I still use music of all types/genres to alleviate my pains/ negative things in my life

On one of the cruises I went on they had a 3 man band on the ship. They played numerous cover songs with string instruments like the violin. It was surprisingly good I thought. My wife was just going to keep walking but I was thinking no I want to just chill and listen to them for a while. It’s interesting hearing cover songs played with completely different instruments.

Serj Tankian (the lead singer) was writing about the war in the Middle East and how the general American was fine to be lied to about it. Lies from the tablecloth, soldiers there to defend freedom, everything’s fine over there…..reality, we were there for oil and the war was more devastating for both sides than any wish to discuss. He than brings up the contention of the poor being meat shield with the wealthy having options to either stay in safe locations while serving or not serving at all.

While in most cases, I imagine you might be correct in your interpretation of the song and it's message. But in this case you are a little mistaken. This song was written to address a very specific situation. The invasion of Iraq in 2003. This is a specific call to wake up and realize that the Iraq war is founded on lies. The intended audience was those in the military and civilians to stand up and recognize that the whole invasion of Iraq was based on lies and that we all had a duty to try and stop it. As a veteran, this song really does speak to me and for me. I was and still am seriously pissed about the criminal waste of human lives that was the war in Iraq. Not only was it a war premised on a lie, but to help pay the bill for that war, the powers that be decided it was going to be a great idea to take $32 BILLION from the only government organization dedicated to taking care of disabled veterans. So to sum it up. They thought it would be a good idea to take money away from the care of disabled veterans to pay for a war that was guaranteed to make a lot more disabled veterans. Considering that the Veterans Administration was way underfunded to begin with, losing $32 billion in funding has caused chaos that is still felt today it the VA system. And as a side note. Those cuts to the VA budget to pay for the war in Iraq were permanent. Despite both Iraq and Afghanistan being over for years now, the VA budget keeps getting attacked and shrunk. There is a saying in the veteran community. The unofficial motto of the Veterans Administration is "Giving veterans a second chance to die for their country since 1930". In the military there are a few simple rules for keeping your sanity. Embrace the suck. Three simple words that can and will allow you to survive anything that does not kill you outright. BOHICA. Bend Over Here It Comes Again. What that says about our sanity to begin with, I will leave it up to you.

I watch both of those and they are both great at musical breakdown. It is really cool getting therapist input, but those to are amazing at what they do too. I would love to see this woman take a look at Ren, from a social/psychological or purely analytical point i think it would be very interesting. I like her energy and see seems to completely enjoy herself openly. I agree though, those channels are amazing, i just don't want to take away from how much I appreciate this channel as well 🙂

I haven't really listened to this song since enlisting a lifetime ago. I'm glad they spent their energy talking about what they chose to. I remember being annoyed by their political messaging when I was young and was still trying to believe I could stay a child and ignore the gravity of what was happening beyond myself. Having served, I got to see so many young people from so many walks offered the only real opportunity they had given their circumstances. I had to watch it eat them alive. I had to agree with and participate in the inhuman mindset of a warfighter. I had to think of how best to kill, how to prevent effective defense against the killing, I had to crave it. I had a series of breakdowns a few years back that put me out of service and I've been here picking up the pieces since. War is nature. We are nature. But we are also special in nature. Our minds have literally transformed the world. It's like some sort of fever dream to think of the marvels the human mind has created. Why hasn't it found a way to do without war. We've shed so much nature already. Is feeding the living into a blender to solve difference the really an acceptable solution? I recognize the reality all too sharply. Even if it can, it hasn't yet. If their is a better way, we seem spell bound by how effectively violence solves every problem. It is spellbinding. The cost, the weight, the nightmare of knowing that everyone knows the cost and feed us forward just as hastily, to some minor end that serves the good of few. Not to protect our home, but to destroy others. To shape a world of peace with oceans of blood and the promise of more to come. In my mind, America isn't Christian. They serve Yahweh. Not the one from the Bible. The ancient War God of Storms, who washed away settlements for offending him. That sounds about right to me. Whatever the goal, paying with lives should be too steep a cost.

Well Well Well... I am thoroughly impressed with this analysis, not only do you understand the lyrics.. you actually enjoyed the song. I suffered a heart attack 4 years ago and underwent quadruple bypass graft surgery, I shouldn't be listening to this music anymore, even though metal has always been my genre, as it really gets my heart racing and my blood flowing faster than the water over Niagara Falls, but what a way it would be to go to my resting place.. You just got yourself a new subscriber... Keep up the fantastic work.

The option of have a opinion, action or not for exemple is political choice because we live in a community big or small, and this choices make difference with that said I believe that this music is a calling to us who are able to speak be actives about things that matters in this society, because our mental health is also connect with the way and place we live in.

BYOB, used to mean Bring your own Beer, in this case, SOAD changed Beer to Bomb.... and it mock about fighting others war, ...the dancing chrorus is a sarcastic thing about the soilders thinking... "Yeah, we are dancing in the desert waiting for the sunchine!!" Why the presidents dont fight a war???

Yeah, you got it right away. Every time I watch this music video I get instant goosebumps when the foot soldiers burst through the wall. It is like that sudden moment when reality comes crashing through your ignorance. The title is a play on the party mentality of "bring your own beer" but it really stand for "bring your own bombs" and it calls out the politicians who start wars but don't put their lives on the line to fight them.

Technically it is both beer and bombs, because while the song points to politicians directly, it is also indirectly calling out the people who choose to ignore the hypocrisy by getting drunk and partying their cares away. I have met people who "love SOAD" and talk about this song like their favorite party song, who have no idea the political connotations the band put into it, and in my head I am just like "You. You are the problem the band is talking about."

I survived the war. I lived on front line for 4 year when there was "cease of fire" but here and there bombs would fall. From my 5th birthday to age of 10 in constant fear. Going to school that looks like concrete fortress. Its funny after war all war veterans got help for PTSD but nobody asked then kids how we feel. Almost all of my generation has some mental related problems or other. Our country is not functioning as it should and i see loot of lives ruined. But do you know who lives "good and healthy" lives? Children of those politicians that started that war. Corruption everywhere.

"Hangars sitting dripped in oil crying freedom" .is a sarcastic reference to the democracy carrot for the iraqi people offered by the west before the invasion and embedding and all that shit that followed with the war or a military occupation Chorus is pretty obvious That everybody points to all the parties (nations) involved in the carrot giving exercise

SOAD is one of a number of heavy rock / metal bands that frequently convey their political messages thru their songs, which aligned (most often than not) with my personal political views. And they have a lot of catchy and creative songs. Prison, Deer Dance, BOOM etc.

Oh. This a highly poitical song, I’ll never say different…I’ll even say I agree at times. In ways as a US Marine, even when I’m fully against the bad, I does with the US, no, not afraid. Brig it on, I’m half Native American, the most violent and hardcore, crazy that gives the USMC a run for its money, and guess what I hate Russia and dirty commines. Lover America, what it stands for; am a USMC vet from 05 to 010. I love this song, so do all my buddies, it shows the corruption that we we ll die for, because ultimately it’s for the American people and nothing can stop Us defending them, no matter what, no matter the odds, The USMC will charge mushroom clouds with bayonets fixed to preserve freedom, if we are given the hint that’s what it takes. Radiation is a third level or lower concern to us.

I don't know if reactor had lyrics in front of her, but for a therapist, I've seen actual deeper analyses from people that aren't professional therapists. The song is overtly political with concrete political references and doesn't dance around the issue of wars in the Middle East. It's not a simplistic metaphor for "burying your head in the sand". Expected a little more.

There is no such thing as a nonpolitical person. Those who reject politics commit themselves to the prevailing ideology of the society they live in, which is very political, there is no such thing as nuetrality politically. This song is about the ignorance of the general population as the U.S. illegally invaded Iraq, murdering over a million civilians in the process in particular. Also the fact that its the poor who are in the ones who make up the grunt soldiers sent to fight and die in these wars that are started by the rich for their own profits (hence the reference to "hangers sitting dripped in oil," because the U.S. wanted to control Iraq's oil and the line "why don't presidents fight the war, why do they always send the poor"). I agree with you that you can extrapulate this into other situations of ignorance and enlightenment, but I don't think that we should ignore exactly what SOAD were trying to get at here.

Trying to force a psychological perspective on this takes away from and mitigates the intended message. It sucks when people can't just accept that there is an intended and correct meaning behind something and need to make it theirs by forcing their twisted version of it into a conversation about it. It's close to part of what this song is even about, distractions from the real situation, covering the truth with a convenient interpretation.

I've listened to thousands of reactions of songs on here. You're the one who seems to actually get what message a song is trying to portray.
