Heat Cycles In Female Whippets And Their Weird Behavior

Lets talk about heat cycles in female whippets, as intact whippet girls will go into heat, just like any healthy female dog. While some won't show changes in their behavior during estrus, others (like a couple of my girls) will do everything in their power to find a mate, under the influence of hormones.

I was worried, too... but it was much easier than I thought..a little bit messy while she was asleep , but while awake, very clean. It's so variable even across sisters.. one of the sisters was almost two! the others were13 months.

Thanks, perfect timing. Our Maja just today entered her first heart. She’s 13 months old. And as you say no longer our puppy 😢 But she’s becoming much more sensible and calmer which is great 🎉

Just like Erys. She is on day 7 of her first heat and I too am noticing some changes. For most girls that's the beginning of the end of the wild puppy stage. And it's a bit sad, but it has its benefits. 😊

@@ShowPaws Your girls are so funny when in season..My girl and her sister also were very flirty with each other, they came into season a week apart - and her other friend ten days later, so it was all fun and games...Plus keeping well away from boys,

My Lucy came on heat at 10 months and it was very obvious. Drops of bodily fluids and a very swollen vulva. No dog park for a month which she found frustrating as she loves to run with her whippet friends. Extra fluffy toys to destroy helped. Her dog park whippet friend didn't come on heat till she was 15 months old. Both are now speyed.😊

My girl before she got spayed was in heat every six months.

My own female Whippet was spayed when old enough. She seems very happy. ..I would have of course LOVED a puppy from her, BUT her conformation isn't 'quite' good enough {she is a little too narrow and was the tiniest puppy in the litter herself} plus the thought of finding good, loving, responsible loving homes for the puppies would have had me in total anguish. They are your responsibility if you bring them into the World. A huge responsibility.

I completely agree with you! Not every dog is supposed to have offspring and if more people understand and make peace with this, we'd deal with way less irresponsibly bred dogs.

Hey people! my 8 year old whippet has mammary cancer. Spay them if you wont breed her. If you do. You might want to inhibit their cycles, until it's time.

Dog breeders is a very general term. If you mean backyard breeders and puppy mills, I wholeheartedly agree.
