You forgot to calculate the amount of conditioned air being sucked out of the room with the vented dryer. When you run a vented dryer all the air being sucked out of the dryer is replaced by outside unconditioned air. How much extra does it cost to heat or cool the outside air replacing the air being vented out of the dryer?

Thanks for the test. I just discovered these heat pump dryers, and am seriously thinking of getting one. One big consideration for me as a Canadian is the hole in the side of my house to let the dryer vent outside. The laundry room is the coldest room in the house, and no matter what kind of outside vent cover you try, in the end you can't get past the fact that you have a 6 inch hole in the exterior wall letting in some -20C air. Even if this dryer is a little slower, the electricity savings and being able to seal that vent hole will help reduce my carbon footprint.

Bought a heat pump dryer 18 months ago, just scrapped it because they are impossible to service. The condensers are totally inaccessible , you have to strip the entire machine to get to them, which includes removing the drum. As they become clogged with dust they take longer and longer to run, to a point where just leave everything smelling damp. They are an ok concept but they way they have been designed seems to be the same between all manufacturers. Ive gone back to a traditional condenser. It uses 3 times the power but dries clothes three times quicker, and they come out nice and warm, so if they are folded when warm saves a fortune on ironing.

This type of dryer uses a lot less energy and the heat that is generated is within the house, hence it warms your house in the winter. So you not only drying your clothes you supplementing the central heating :-) A++ for general efficiency , A++++++++ as it is warming your home and not just the outside.

1.898 kWh charges 15pence, 0.657 kWh charges 5pence so 15p minus 5p = saving of 10p if you use the dryer 3 times a week that’s a saving of 30p times that by 52 weeks is £15.60. If I buy the heat pump dryer for extra £100.00 to recoup this hundred pounds will take 6 years 6 months. It would be worth if the heat pump dryer and non heat pump dryer is the same price also remember it takes longer for the heat pump dryer to dry and the heat pump dryer has to be in a room where the temperature is above 15deg Celsius otherwise it will take even longer to dry because it uses the heat from the compressor which the heat never goes above 45deg Celsius.

Just a thought if the Samsung takes on average 35% longer to complete each load then does that mean it will wear out it’s motor/bearings/pumps faster and will need replacing sooner, also the Samsung costs more than twice the cost of the Indesit to buy so should you not consider theses factors when calculating the running costs. Also environmentally the carbon footprint of producing such a complicated heat pump design and the fact they won’t last as long so more will have to be made should be set against the gains in reduced energy usage. This design also needs an ambient temperature of 15” min to function efficiently so won’t work in an unheated room in the winter. Not arguing with your test results just think these things should be considered before saying better in every way.
@amschind
@amschind 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If they build these machines with the same quality as old stuff, complete with replaceable and accessible wear items, then the decision would be easy. As it stands, many of these will be built to minimize first cost at the expense of total cost of ownership, which will change the overall economics. Like most buying decisions for durable goods, spending more at the outset often pays off over the long run IF technology advancement doesn't demand replacement before the break-even point.

All Bosch and Miele appliances come with a two year warranty as standard. My experience in the trade over the last 30 years is that manufacturers tend to offer special deals on the models they are having difficulty selling. Hi Adam, great video. Do you think the Samsung has the small (600watt) heater in it because they figure users want to get warm clothes out at the end? It will, of course. do something to speed up evaporation but the whole point of drying with a dehumidifier is that it is far more efficient than with heat. Not sure why viewers want a comparison with a condenser drier - they are even more inefficient because the water vapour is being condensed electrically as well. I think earlier ones condensed the vapour by pumping perfectly clean mains water through a heat-exchanger straight down the drain. Not great for the environment or for a metered water bill. Your test was conclusive but a before and after weighing would have taken the guesswork out of just how dry the towels were. And given you a KwH per litre of water figure. Great stuff. Thanks. Will

Condensor dryers are inefficient?
@willcaro1038
@willcaro1038 5 жыл бұрын
Hi j m. Condenser driers are slightly more power hungry than vented unis because they refrigerate the warm damp air. The selling point for a condenser drier is that you don't need to find a sizeable exhaust route to the outside. You do of course need a drain for the condensed water but if it is next to the washing machine then that's not usually a problem. Vented driers have a fan (condensers do too - to blow the air through the condenser)and that is drawing in warm air from your house and wasting it to the outside. The overall calculation of cost is quite complicated but there is absolutely no doubt that condenser driers are much much more efficient. They are comparatively complicated and therefore very pricey so I wouldn't like to say if they save money over, say, 5 years of use.

Other advantages: 1. Here in New Hampshire blocking the vent pipe with insulation and sealing it has made the laundry room significantly warmer in winter even when not using the dryer. 2. Residual heat the dryer does generate warms the house instead of the outside (the idiocy of venting hot moist air from a heated dry home!) 3. In summer, the outside line is almost as quick as the dryer anyway, so we can avoid AC battles with the heat pump. 4. Save the collected water to wash your windows! I discovered the distilled water doesn't spot the windows if you use it to rinse.

It's a very interesting technology with some clear advantages. The machines are very expensive compared to a simple electric dryer and I worry that they would be expensive to service requiring things like compressor replacement. My electric dryer that gets used a lot is now 32 years old and all I've replaced is the heating element. However you are not telling the biggest part of the story and that is the air that is exhausted out of the house by a normal dryer. It is a big waste to heat up that air then exhaust it outside. Cold air has to be pulled back into the house from other sources and reheated by the house heating system. I saw other calculations where for a small house one dryer cycle would require replacing all of the air in the house with outside air and the cost of heating that air was up to equal to the cost of running the dryer itself. Obviously this depends on the outside temperature. This might be enough savings to offset the shorter lifespan of the more expensive dryer.

The question you have to ask yourself is how long it will take you to save the amount of cash that the newer heat pump t/d will cost you over and above the cost of the condenser/vented t/d - I'm facing the same dilemma, but looking at it financially - a decent condenser dryer will cost me £299 whereas a heat pump dryer will cost me £550 or more. Yes I am going to save electricity, but am I going to save enough on my electricity bill to cover the extra outlay for the more expensive machine - some websites I've looked at suggest it will take up to 9 years to make the savings real and to notice real savings in your electricity bill - by which time the more expensive machine (both of them more than likely) will probably be on the scrap heap.

With this in mind plus the cost of the machine being at least double the price of a condenser dryer it doesn't work out any cheaper to run.

Dont think it's a heat pump in that sense. It recirculates heat it already produces by removing the moisture from the clothes.

PLUS its hard to account for the savings resulting from not stealing air from your home and venting it outside. In the Summer you are effectively sucking cold air out of your house and in the winter heated air... Definitely a cost associated with that.

Thank you for this excellent video... I bought an electricity consumption meter to measure my current conventional condenser tumble dryer in order to figure out if it is worth it to replace it with heat pump dryer... So far, in six months, my conventional condenser tumble dryer was on for about 432 hours and has consumed 563kWh. That translates to drying roughly 4285 of your towels in that Samsung heat pump dryer... :-) It also means, that I have average power of 1,3kW. With your Samsung, I could save more like 57% of energy... Thank you again, excelent video!

So I bought the heat pump unit 6 months ago... I have not implemented the electricity meter, but I will do that today and measure for half a year. But there is an observation: the heat pump unit is substantially more demanding on the maintenance and also the drying is not as good as with the conventional unit before. Both are the same brand: AEG. And both are the top of their line...

A heat pump dryer will cost anything from two to four times as much, will have longer drying times espescially if the machine is situated in an unheated utility room or garage and particularly in winter - the heat pump essentially "draws heat" from the environment, and on a freezing winter day there isn;t much. This means that the motor, drive belts and bearings will be subject to far more wear and tear, therefore, the machine will likely have to be serviced more often and might well have a considerably shorter service life. It's very simplistic to just say it uses les spower so it;s cheaper. Add in these factors, and you might be looking at twenty years to simply break even compared with a standard type dryer. The higher energy bills are spread out over time, wheres a pump dyrer has a much higher capital cost. Just like heat pump central heating, lower bills mean nothing if the initial outlay is beyond your means. Espesciall yif you play it smart by only running your dryer on off-peak electricity. OUr existing tumble dryer lasted 25 years, how? We line-dry most things and only tumble when we have to, or to get rid of final dampnes sor to remove stiffness. The cheapest dryer of all is the wind and sun.

Let me explain this a little better. It is not pulling heat from the space around it. This heat pump clothes dryer is a closed system. It is not like a heat pump water heater. It is basically a dehumidifier with a clothes tumbler mounted on it. The heat "added" to the system comes from the energy consumed to drive the compressor and blower/tumbler motors. The hot air generated by the air cooled condenser evaporates the moisture from the clothing, then the heat is recovered by the hot air and moisture condensing on the evaporator. And the cycle repeats. The extra time required is a product of evaporating and then condensing all of the water removed from the clothing without using so much energy. If it is located inside a dwelling then you also reduce the very large amount of conditioned air consumed by a standard gas or electric dryer and then dumped outside. So, if you're running HVAC to condition the living space then it will reduce that load as well. Drying on clothes lines outside is always the lowest consumer of energy, but that is not always an option. Time spent and weather conditions are going to dictate what people can and will do.

Given the price of a heat pump dryer is typically thrice of a vented one, I guess it doesn't pay out soon unless you are doing like 8kg washing-drying everyday

So November 2022, cost would be 74p per load for the old dryer vs 22.5p per load for the new one. That’s quite a difference but do your sums carefully- a heat pump dryer is about £170 more than the older ones so will start saving after about 340 washes.

I'm guessing the standard electric dryer would be way cheaper to fix, should something go wrong, versus the heat pump dryer. I wonder how the 10 year operating costs would compare :-) Hopefully the Heat Pump dryer would still be worth the extra money up-front. Thanks so much for the tests. Hopefully we all go this direction to save energy as we move into the future

Just had a 7 year old Samsung heat pump show a fault. NOBODY would repair it! Result = going back to condensing-type. Far more to go wrong with heat pumps apparently.
@seana806
@seana806 Жыл бұрын
@@garethbryneithin a heat pump is basically a refrigeration system that can either be used to cool or vice versa. The down side is if the system develops a leak, it will render the dryer useless since it won’t be able to heat and condense the water. Frigidaire here in the US built condenser dryers from the early 1950’s to sometime in the mid 60’s and while they worked good from what I heard, they fell out of fashion since they ran HOT and left clothes damp after it stopped since the condenser couldn’t keep up in warmer months but worked fine in the fall and winter months when it was cooler. Condenser dryers wouldn’t work too well here in the southwestern US since you would have to have the air conditioning set to 72F or lower and simply would have higher cooling costs in the spring and summer as opposed to using a vented dryer which drys fairly quickly and isn’t outrageous to operate. A vented gas dryer could easily run circles around most condenser and heat pump dryers, hell even electric vented dryers since they dry quickly and are cheap to operate.

What are your thoughts on conditioned air being lost to outdoors with vented dryer? And cost to repair ventless dryer with it's pricier hardware
@spencerwilton5831
@spencerwilton5831 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Montgomery he's based in the UK, homes don't have air conditioning. We are more concerned about keeping heat in! Condenser dryers help in this regard, the heat remains within the building reducing load on the heating system. Vented dryers are increasingly rare here, the vast majority of models available are condensers now, and prices are much the same as vented.Heat pumps are a small part of the market but growing, although still significantly more expensive. We don't really have a dryer culture here, most homes have one but they are generally seen as something to be used when it's too wet or cold to dry outside, not for every wash.
