Heater core bypass: 10 to 30 minutes ($10 / $110 / $160)
If the heater core in your car is leaking, you need to replace the core or bypass it. Allowing it to leak another day is playing coolant roulette. Don't do it, you won't win.

Awesome video! After owning a 1980 240 and a 1995 940 I have come to the conclusion that the heater core design is the single biggest mistake Volvo ever made. Both of mine have leaked... and I took apart the 240 to put in a new heater core - and it was a LOT of work. But your bypass solution is great to get around the all weekend chore of putting in a new heater core. So thanks!

You are a lifesaver. I have an S80 and a bad heater core leak. I've been playing roulette for a few months and just keep feeding the car coolant. The car has other issues, but I'm running it into the ground so I'm only concerned with prolonging the life of the car til I can get another one. This should do the trick. Thanks so much for posting this.

Thanks Robert. 5/8" heater hose and two clamps worked fine today in a '96 850. To disconnect from firewall: pushed in, then used long angled pliers to depress both ears of the yellow clip with one hand, and pull on the hose with the other hand. Appreciate your videos.

And Robert! Just a suggestion. If you have to replace the heater core, disconnect those hoses, grab a small diameter tube, push it into the hole until it stops, get a syrenge, plug the tube onto it, and you can suck out the coolant. Doing it right will prevent the coolant to flow into the cabin, or just a few drop will come out from the heater core. Now you can remove the heater core, and unplug everything. Cheers
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 6 жыл бұрын
No need to remove the hoses to replace the heater core. Messing with the hoses will only cause you problems.
@haewien
@haewien 6 жыл бұрын
Robert DIY but you have to remove the core if you want to replace it :) than the coolant will flow out from it, right into the cabin. (Or is it called header matrix in the US?) Sorry, I dont know, the hood called bonnet here, gas station is servo, etc xD

You are my favorite guy on you tube about volvos. I'm always glad when I Google a question & it is you that shows up. I'm a woman that works as much as possible on my own volvo. I use to have a 98. That got almost 400,000 miles. Now I have a 2002 v70-t5. Have had it for 2 years. Love it but it has had more problems than my 98 did. It also seems harder to work on than my 98 was. So thank you very much for all your you tube info. 🙂👍

Robert : Thank you for the VERY detailed video on this issue. My Volvo (98 V70) had an engine swap & the #%!?? that performed the swap failed to disconnect the 2 hoses from the firewall. I eventually determined that the heater core tubes just inside the firewall were damaged when the engine was ripped out & used your bypass method as a fix until i can replace the core. PLEASE tell your many followers to KNOW WHO THEY ARE DEALING WITH. Drug addicts (i caught them smoking whatever out back of their shop) make lousy mechanics.

So...Robert DIY...my problem..my son was driving the Volvo and what he thought was smoke started coming into the car. He stopped, 100 miles out, we got AAA to tow the car home. I found that the coolant reservoir was completely empty and entire radiator was empty, so suspected radiator hose break. Couldn't immediately find the leak so decided to refill the system to see where it was leaking. Kept filling the coolant reservoir from the hose waiting for it to come out of the top radiator hose. Thought it was a bit much water for engine and radiator but where else could it be going. Right? Hmm, discovered I had filled the whole car with about 6" water!!! Then I turned to the internet and found your video. Thanks. A little late but I have removed the heater hoses and will follow your clear instructions and install the heater bypass tomorrow. Spent the rest of my day wet-vac'ing the car out. LOL.

Great video, Robert. I always enjoy and benefit from them. Attempted this myself yesterday on a 97 850 t5. Word of caution, you can't have a coolant hose clamp that close to the turbo, first day running the metal hose clamps got hot from the turbo's radiant heat and started to melt into the hose. I'm going to attempt to reverse my operation here at the gas station so I can get home. Then move the mod somewhere even further than where I tried to hold it using a zip tie.

@jamie0 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Turned out OK though. I let it cool down then ended up just pushing the hose on a little further (had enough hose) and re-installing the hose clamp. Of course, the key was being more aggressive to put the mod further from the turbo, about 8 inches, and used a bit of 12 gauge copper wire ( found on location 🙃, as in, the ground ) to secure it. Adventures in Volvo ownership. Hopefully I can get a good heater-core in this fall.

Smashing video, as allways robert :-)) My mate used a short length of copper water pipe, the rubber hoses had no inserts so they slid over the copper pipe and two jubilee clamps were used, worked fine :-)) The bypass only had to last a short while untill the heater matrix was in stock. A light hat might help you, keeps the heat drilling into your head, i forgot and was bloody ill afterwards :-(

Robert DIY It is the same circuit as the dome light interior lights, because when the fuse blows the inside lights also have no power as well as dinging from the open circuit. What’s strange is, I’ll replace the fuse and it won’t blow right away, but after driving a bit and go over just the right bump, short happens again and fuse blows. No idea how the short goes away awhile and I can put a new fuse which does not immediately blow until I drive awhile. Maybe needs to warm up exposed wire expand to make contact and cause the short. I ordered a short tracer tool to locate hopefully.

Hello RobertOnce you bypass the heater core, how do you get the air conditioner to work? I did the same steps on my grand marquis but I still only got hot air when I turned the air on after bypassing the core.

Hi robert. Quick question i just bought a 97 volvo 850 glt and i assume the heater core is bypassed because there is only one pipe connected. The aircon isnt working can this be part of the aircon problem? Or is it just for heat?

@RobertDIY

Probably old stuck clips. If they are old, just pull harder. It will probably break the junction. I usually change the junction. Why are you disconnecting those hoses?

I did the bypass on 1993 850. I finally got them out with no apparent breakage. There were rust stains on them from the steel pipes. Now I have to deal with a gallon or two of coolant in the foam under the driver side rugs. Any tutorials on that?

Robert, how tight should be the screw holding heater core to the connector? I used silicone O-rings and there is leak as soon the engine starts. Thanks

Not to tight. If you tighten it to much it may pinch the seal.

@RobertDIY

I don't know why it's overheating? If it is due to low coolant level from the leak, probably. If the head is damaged from the previous overheating, then no.

You should just do one do at least you have ac mine was leaking in a Mitsubishi diamonte took the line from the block with coolant recirculated it just did a U bend with the hose no leaking or coolant on the passenger mat and have ac but no heat sucks that Volvo would be a piece of cake to fix with the Mitsubishi magna we made them in Australia fir export to the U.S and Japan I think you call the diamonte but you have to take the whole dash out and replace it $100+ part but 4-10hrs labour it sucks can you do one on that make??

The only path into the cabin of the car is the heater core hoses. If you have another coolant leak, it's leaking on the ground or in the oil pan somewhere.

Robert DIY I just figured out how to bypass it on my 960 and I was wondering is there suppose to be antifreeze in the reserve tank cause I don't see any in mine but my car isn't over heating anymore and I did fill it up and I put it on park and pressed on the gas and antifreeze started to fill up the reserve tank again but it only did that once now I don't see anything. Do you know what this could be ? Or is that normal when you bypass a heater core ?
