Knowing a tad bit about this heater and how it operates, the cleaner the fuel is going into it, the less maintenance it will require. Dirty fuel being pumped into it means an eventual clogged atomizer filter at the glow plug.
@dangerrous Жыл бұрын
Hi Ollie, we have a 8kw diesel heater in our unit, it just takes the chill out of our unit, there are a few good videos on youtube, TNT (Robert Murry Smith) gives you a basic lowdown on them including using anything other than diesel. The problem is getting a clean burn, the 'dirty fuel' will clog up the turbine, and atomiser, this just means higher service intervals and replacing the atomiser. the units are a very close copy of the Eberspacher, the manual gives some idea on it's limits. There are also a couple of vids that give you an idea of how to tune them, basically try not to run the fan at more than 4700rpm and the heated air no more then 95degrees C( taken at the exit), David McLuckie has numerous vids on these heaters including one where he looks at the air fuel ratio (stoichiometric). Once the winter is done, I'll give ours a good service, I think we're running at 4.4hz with a fan speed of 4700rpm, any lower and there's a significant drop in air temperature output, it's on Temp setting, so drops to tickover after about 3 hours of 100% capacity. We also recover some the exhaust gas heat via a heat transfer. This has been a very cheap way of heating the unit when considering installation & running costs of a permanent gas or electric install.
@mobiusx8117 Жыл бұрын
"...and the heated air no more then 95degrees C( taken at the exit)..." If you run these heaters at low temperature, like 95C, you'll likely be getting combustion chamber carbon build-up even if you run pure diesel. Most people who run waste oil blends recommend running the units at full temperature (>200C) to ensure good combustion and low carbon build up. Many people also use two fuel tanks, and start the units on pure diesel, then switch over to the waste oil blend only after reaching full temperature. They then switch back to pure diesel 30 minutes before shutting down the unit.

@@mobiusx8117 I think you may have misunderstood me on air temp, Our intake temperature going across the the cooling fins is around 8degrees C, the exit temp is around 95 degrees C, out of the box the unit measured @85. The exit air temp was measured at the end point of the 500mm aluminium duct, I took the unit all the way up to 5.4hz and a fan speed of 5000rpm, the exit temp went up to 117 degrees C but we started to get a slight burning plastic smell, so backed it off quickly. The exhaust gases get ridiculously hot, I've not measured this temp, I suppose it's about EGT and Lambda values, or is it when looking at you're looking at obtaining the most heat out of the unit without damaging it?
@dangerrous Жыл бұрын
@@TheDIVAofDIY I love tinkering with stuff and luckily the cost of heating the unit with professionally installed equipment compared to the cost of this unit installed is pocket money to the company, the heater seems to run really well, we have a chinese takeaway amongst the unit complex and I may approach them regarding their waste cooking oil, Robert Murry Smith recommends a blend of a clean fuel with the cooking oil (when cleaned of impurities), as you say it's the start up that requires a bit of thought. The current setup of the heat exchanger is a 2.5m length of 28mm copper tube that just goes up and down 3 times, then exits through a wall panel about 10ft in the air, the pipe run is situated on the diesel heater cold air entry port, a box covers the pipe run to protect people from the hot copper pipe and to help draw cold air across the copper exhaust pipe into the cold air intake. The disadvantage of this is 1) possible air flow restriction for the exhaust gas, and 2) Condensation build up. I'm now looking at Intercoolers, there's several cast Ali ones on ebay (cheap!!!), I could machine an inlet and outet port, then just rework the intercooler with a bit of fabrication and tigging, utilise the 30amp psu I'm using and stick a couple of Computer fans on it, would I get a good return on the work/time invested, probably not, would it be interesting to do? hell ya
@mobiusx8117 Жыл бұрын
@@dangerrous Thanks for those additional details. I just measure the temperature of the unit (where the warm air exhausts, without any hose attached) using a infrared laser thermometer and I can get to around 220C. This is about as hot as these units will run, and once the internal temperature sensor in the heater reaches this temperature it will begin to slow the pump in order to lower the temperature. After the temperature is lowered, to around 180C in my case, the pump will go back to its original speed and the heater will warm up again to around 220C, then repeat. My understanding is that, because motor oil has a very high flash point, you need to run these heaters at their maximum temperature, or you will have carbon build up that will quickly make them inoperable.

I have a 8 kw diesel heater , and thinking about using it and maybe another one to heat my house and water, use a water tank as a thermal transfer, to heat a tank of water, maybe use oil to be heated by the heater, and heat the water with oil, the oil should be capable of being heated to 300°F without issues, and easily heat the water to 150°F,. I'm going to build my wood stove to work similar, and keep it outside, in a tiny shed, just large enough for it and a bit of wood, use A bit of PEX pipe, to radiantly heat the floors, or maybe use aluminum tubing, a couple loops of 3/8" tubing, between floor joist, then insulate them , atleast in the common areas of the house, living room, kitchen , bathroom, and half the bed room atleast! I like it cool anyway,. But here in the USA, Christmas 2022,⛄ it's too cold! It's cold, the windchill about 40° below freezing!

Is it still working? People who run it on waste oil say that excess carbon built up happens inside the burner, later totally blocks up the glow plug air hole and exhaust opening. I guess white smoke is something to do with over priming during the start up. Condensation is something to do with exhaust air temperature. It should burn clean no matter what fuel you use because the deposit is inside the burner 😅. CO and CO2 has no colour or smell, so it looks like it's burning clean during the operation. Believe it or not, you need to choke the combustion air inlet, when running at max fan speed. If the exhaust pipe gets really hot, it means that the hot gases don't have enough time to transfer the heat energy through the heat exchanger. They just get blown through and out! I've built a throttle flap for my air intake (1p coin) and it's onky about 1/5 open. Exhaust is now cooler, heat exchanger hotter and good clean burn.

@@TheDIVAofDIY These diesel heaters have two separate fans, which are both connected to the same shaft and operate at the same RPM. The 1st blows cooling air around the heater, sending warm air into the room. The 2nd feeds air into the combustion chamber. It's why their air quality is so terrible. If everyone in the UK purchased one, it would barely move the needle on climate change. They still want us to pay for the damage our grandparents did to the environment. I'd swear that our government is trying to destroy us.

Your heating oil might be used less efficiently, but the exhaust temperature of the Chinese heater is pretty high. In that sense it isn't efficient at all. What counts for most people is the financial efficiency. The Chinese heater is virtually unbeatable that way. That's all I'm saying really. The policy greens have made the financial efficiency of home heating so poor that people see massive financial efficiency gains if they compromise thermal efficiency moderately. Unfortunately a moderate reduction in thermal efficiency leads to a quite significant deterioration in environmental impact. Just a little suggestion. I would take this video down as unless you have a licence to burn used oil £3000 per year then you’re breaking the law and could get a massive fine.

I would just do it. Here in Canada we would never allow the government to tell us what to use. No need to advertise what you're doing, though.

In the US we can burn waste oil without a permit but any heating system installed especially running through a wall will mean if something happens your insurance company won’t cover you and the building inspector will make your house uninhabitable until repaired.
