The UK has virtually zero gas storage compared with the rest of Europe. Europe buys gas when it’s cheaper in the summer and lets the storage run down during the higher priced winter months. The UK has no interest in reducing gas prices and will pay ANY amount of money as it will simply passes this cost on to the customers.
@robinjones516914 күн бұрын
Yes! I agree! This cost us really dearly in 2021 when gas prices rocketed. The crazy thing is that we have huge amounts of salt caverns where we can store enough biomethane and/or hydrogen to see us through dunkelflaute periods. There is a high risk those get used for CO2 from carbon capture instead. A technology that doesn't really work.
@davebax681913 күн бұрын
and the UK owns absolutely Zero Gas and Oil, in the summer months, Big energy sends large amounts of gas to europe through pipelines as they buy it and store it. Its called the international energy market. Politicians could have increased storage here and bought gas at summer prices.....they didn't

@iareid825514 күн бұрын
Robin, it is obvious to me you have no understanding of the 'new technology'. There are only two sorts of renewable generation that meet the criteria for an economical, reliable and stable source of electricity. One is hydro power (Not pumped hydro) and the other is wrongly called renewable which is biomass, The remaining types of renewables meet none of the criteria required which is that it should be synchronous, have inertia, have reactive power input and support short circuit current levels. Wind, solar, wave and tidal have none of these so cannot replace conventional generators. They need considerable support to be able to provide as much as they do now to our grid but as more and more gets added it becomes harder to keep the grid stable and reliable. This is not new and has been known from the inception..

For the last four decades, UK governments have failed to invest in our power infrastructure, especially in nuclear, which could have given us energy surety and at lower cost. Instead the governments have decided upon a policy of decline. Green energy is all well and good, but only if it is economical and you have the battery storage to manage the distribution of energy especially when the wind and sun is not favourable, neither of these things have been provided. We now have the world's most expensive industrial energy costs and this is holding back the profitability of our industries. This country needs a different solution to that being offered by the current and recent administrations.

I still can't believe Europe pays 10 for gas, 4 for wind, 2 for solar, and 1 for nuclear. But we pay whatever the highest-rated energy product is, so if solar goes from 2 to 100, we pay 100 for gas, 100 for wind, and 100 for nuclear. That might be why we have the highest prices.

Paying contingement payment for wind energy from taxpayers money is showing incompetent planing, incompetent knowlage especially on a country with high industrialized level. UK on 2023 generated 82.46 TWh/year, and payed 1 Billion Pound. These money are from taxpayers money, they pay these on bills. Government must repurpose many suspended oil wells and use these wind energy to enhance production of oil. These will revitalize the UK energy sector, will create jobs and increase oil recovery from suspended oil wells. Contact for detail information, open to help UK and other countries who have energy that they can not use.

Not really, there's one in China and one in Russia. Nobody has built one in the west without it getting cancelled. Nuscale were the most recent to fail. Nuclear always goes massively over budget, takes way too long and you still need storage. Renewables are just quicker.
