Heavy Duty Tap Wrench Restoration

Restoring a 50cm (20inch) steel tap wrench. Nice and big for tap between M9 and M27.
Found it at a local flea market for 8€. No visible maker mark but still a really nice piece, defenetly forth the price for me.
Index of operation and materials:
1:00 Electrolysis: water and sodium carbonate solution, parts connected to negative steel sacrificial anodes to positive of a 12V DC power supply (car battery charger). 3-4 hrs at 5amp.
1:37 De greasing jaws with mineral spirit
2:25 Polishing with steel brush wire
3:10 Cleaning burrs with needle file
4:14 Greasing jaws with spray bearing grease
4:46 Cleaning parts after electrolysis with brass wire brush
6:04 Drying parts immediately after electrolysis and coating with synthetic oil to prevent flash rust
5:58 Buffing with steel wool
7:35 Assembly with grease on threads and sliding surfaces
9:00 Testing with M16 tap (only cleaning existing threads on another project)

Obviously I'm a fan of your channel / products ... and I know it's not necessary, but I think you'd have gotten more likes, comments, etc if you used a mill to took off a millimeter from all flat surfaces & a lathe to take off a mm from all concentric ... then hardened it, leaving it look perfect.

It's sometimes funny how awesome a tap wrench is as far as tools go. Not as common as the hammer or screwdriver. Not used as much as pliers or socket wrenches, but the tap wrench just has a certain amount of elegance and fit for a single purpose that the other almost lack.

TheArsonsmith4242 I found another purpose (sort of)...I use them for gripping Bronze rods (up to about 3/8” diameter) to twist into torcs and armrings. Best tool I’ve discovered for the job!

Again excellent resto. I have a vintage set from #00 to #6 I restored. See if you can now fine some of the smaller ones for smaller taps. One thing, DON'T use grease for the grub screws and other slide/screw fittings. Grease attracts dirt, chips and other foreign debri and may hinder the workings. Oil everything. You can always blow/wipe clean and apply a few drops of oil to the moving parts. Keep up the great work.

Nice job. Glad you didn't try to paint it or apply some other finish. I would have probably just soaked it in transmission fluid and blown off the excess with compressed air, then used it as is. Looking forward to a video on the bench shear.

For future projects, you can also wrap the spindle with steel wool and add more to it as it spins. It will build up and compact as you use it, it cleans up my handmade jewelry surfaces pretty efficiently.

I love your videos, they take me back to when I was an apprentice Fitter and Turner, I had completely forgotten that I made a Tap wrench about this same size during my first year at our apprentice school. Just looking at it brought back all the processes required to create this, turning, milling, boring, knurling, hardening, surface grinding, internal left-hand thread..... :) (You should have re-knurled the handles) :)

Something neat for keeping things with set screws from being damaged (generally on more 'delicate' tools) is to slightly indent/dome the end of the set screw and put a tiny chunk of lead between the screw and what it's supposed to clamp against. The lead will take the compression so you won't peen or mark the steel. Fantastic work either way. :D

so what do you use to keep the tools from rusting at a later point? so you just use some oil and wipe it down? i do some little tool restorations myself and in Florida, humidity is a big issue. been hoping to find some ideas cause ive coated a bare-metal project in WD-40 before and after a few weeks, even with the surface still oiled, it did start to rust in some spots. no where near as bad as it would have left bare, but im just trying to find a good solution. i have bought a can of shellac recently as many recommend that for bare metal. Clear-coat has failed me many times, but its also worked many times. but id rather avoid the 50/50 odds if possible. Any anti-rust ideas would be appreciated!
