Heavy snow sweeps across Toronto area, causing traffic chaos

Toronto was hit with a blast of winter weather on Wednesday after weeks of relatively mild temperatures.
Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for Canada’s largest city, saying total accumulations of between 15 and 20 cm were possible. The agency also warned of potential power outages, adding the storm was expected to end Thursday morning.
Police said they had responded to about 40 collisions as of Wednesday evening, as the snow made for slick road conditions.
“The car's off. It's been off for 30 minutes,” one person said as they waited amid the traffic congestion created by poor driving conditions.

It's ridiculous at this point. I'm talking about the people and not the weather. I just got home and spent an hour in traffic (Montreal) because idiots decided to drive 30km/h in the passing lane on the highway with their hazards on and REFUSE TO MOVE OVER. It's as if they think they have some authority and are the keepers of the speed. If you're not comfortable with winter driving that's fine but STAY THE FK OUT OF THE PASSING LANE and let people who know how to drive in the snow get to where their going. It snows every year and it's like the drivers just keep getting worse and worse.

I've been from one end of the country to the other, and though winter definitely sucks, those professionals you speak of will get it done! It really isn't a big storm. The worst part is people without snow tires getting into accidents. That's the biggest thing impeding road crews. I can only assume you're definitely not from Ontario. Because this is a typical storm day.

I'm in Nova Scotia , we get the same weather this winter is actually mild compared to others WE KNOW ITS GOING TO SNOW why are these ppl driving round in summers.... all those cars stuck on hills... low profile summer tires. 90 minutes north east of Toronto in Lindsay, it's a different world. Must be a fluke. Nothing ever happens here. As I tell everyone, the only danger in Lindsay, is dying of boredom. Because nothing ever happens here. And no, I've been saying this since 67. I'm originally from Quebec where actual snow happens. Good thing I don't own skis. No way to use them here.

My drive home was very slow, about 20km under the speed limit. But then, everyone else was going that speed too (except the hot shots with fancy cars and really, REALLY nice snow tires). My drive home is normally about 20 minutes. I got home 15 minutes later than normal. I drove extra cautious and got home safe. My family and I enjoyed some backyard snow.

I was working downtown at the hospital Monday and Tuesday night, but I'm off tonight until the weekend. I came home this morning just when the snowfall was starting. I'm just thankful to be able to stay home for now and not planning on going anywhere. I hope everybody is able to get home or to work safely.

The media coverage has been comical. Ask why the City was not better prepared. Ask why so many people were trying to drive when they did not have to. Ask how many people still don’t bother with snow tires. Ask why, every year, some Canadians are surprised by winter. Ask why -15C is considered “life threatening” in the east when it is a balmy light jacket day in the west (except for Vancouver, where it is also “life threatening.”) Ask why normal winter weather is evidence of “catastrophic climate change.” It isn’t. By the way, if you own proper winter clothing, especially warm boots, winter is actually quite pleasant.

I drove home from Costco (Woodbine) with my wife sitting beside me, she looked at her iPhone google map and guide me to avoid driving into the dark (non-moving traffic) area (Steeles Street) so we turn into John Street then Bayview Ave then Laureleaf Drive straight to home without delay.

"Heavy snow" means the snow clearing vehicles, and hundreds of tons of salt, are incapable of changing the roads to water covered roads, and therefore all-season tires become insufficient. Most of Canada doesn't live this way, and changes their tires for winter conditions.

I grew up around York Mills and the DVP in the early '70's. When a bad snow hit, we used to go down to Hogg's Hollow to help push buses up the hill. My, how times have changed...

went to UofT back in mid / late 1980’s - boarded up near Davisville - one storm so bad that I stayed down on campus (St George & Bloor) instead of trying to get out - next morning I walked down middle of Bloor not a car or truck in sight - the ploughs had been but you’d never know it and sidewalks not even attempted - was lucky that Avenue Rd buses were sorta running - after what seemed like ages I got back to my room and stayed put for a day or two - that was a snow storm - today is just snow fall - when was the storm that had Mayor Mel calling on the armed forces for help - people this is Canada - we still get winter storms - please prepare for them - stay safe so they’re memories not nightmares

@@mikeoxlong5843 Even the best winter tires are not that much for a normal car. The tires will last you for years though. You can take side roads with them to avoid the idiots stuck on a hill without them. See it every winter any time I go up a steep hill. Always that 1 guy at least that is stuck.
