About Dude Dad:
Hi! I'm Taylor Calmus, a Colorado-based actor/comedian. I started Dude Dad© two weeks before my son Theo was born as a way to stay creative while learning to be a father. My wife Heidi and I now have 3 kids and over 300+ videos. My purpose for the channel is to entertain, enlighten and inspire.
In addition to Dude Dad©, I have been in numerous TV shows, commercials, and have regular appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I will also be hosting my own TV show called "Super Dad" on the new Magnolia Network / Discovery+. Heidi and the kids will also be a part of the show. I am originally from the rural community of Howard, South Dakota.

My kids thought I was crazy has a homeschooling mom. The day the school books arrived was like Christmas to me. I was opening boxes, throwing stuffing out gleaming with joy over every workbook that came in. My kids would groan and roll their eyes and walk away. I have an older daughter who intends to homeschool. I know what she will do. Her husband, though will probably be even more enthusiastic about the new books. She married her mom in personalities. Lol

That's why the teacher has to have a secret supply of yellow folders - it's a necessary item but there will be parents who won't understand the necessity or can't find one or just don't or won't follow instructions, etc. I'm thinking a second sheet that explains and provides examples of WHY these specific things are needed should be included for reference. Saying things like you just said in order for people to understand and comply better. The "why" sheet.

Nursing is recommended as a supplement until at least one year of age to ensure enough calories and nutrients for the growing child, as it cannot yet eat enough solid foods to fully cover its needs. - from a medical student

@@chasetonga I nursed my first until 13 months. She crawled off my lap and was done. I forced ween my son at 2, 1 month before his baby sister was born. My last one went on a nursing strike and I switched to a sippy cup because she wouldn't take a bottle either.

It’s very healthy and thankfully others are nice about it. I hope they are not mean and judge mental as it’s not their business and or does not hurt anyone. it’s a great thing to do. So thank you both for making us laugh. That crayon box was freaking amazing!!! 🤣🤣🤣. PS….each year is exciting & emotional. Because yes they are growing & getting that much more independent of us parents. It’s a part of life & the circle but that doesn’t make it an easier. ♥️. To all those parents & teachers out there. May you & your kiddo’s have a very successful & safe 2022-2023 school year!!!

I teach high school chemistry. My supply list for kids is so basic. Probably the most basic for any teacher in the school. I'm like, "paper and binder or a notebook, pencils or pens, scientific or graphing calculator, highlighters are optional." I have bought so many things for the classroom, I don't worry about it. Even if they don't have a calculator, I'm okay since I have a basket of scientific calculators I bought at the Dollar Tree. BTW, teachers spend a lot of money on school supplies. I remember my parents being frustrated with how specific the teacher's supply list were, especially if we never used the stuff. Like they would have on there how many report folders and then you never did a report. For college, I had to buy a $150 molecule model kit. That thing's seal was never broken. The professor never had us use it. I was so mad. It's one of the reasons I'm so low-maintenance on school supplies. The shoe thing is a safety thing. Coming from a science background (I used to sequence DNA in a lab as lab tech back in the day), closed toe shoes were a must. I think our school dress codes required closed toe shoes back in the 90s. It wasn't a teacher thing. But, closed toe shoes can protect your feet from something dropping or spilling on them. For elementary school children, they're better traction on the playground (unless they're Mary Janes or something) and protect the toes. I'm 100% confident safety is the reason for the shoes. The specific color folder is probably for organization. Especially for elementary school because one teacher can teach multiple subjects. So a yellow folder could be used for their math folder. The teacher can see that they're on task, especially if he or she puts homework in the child's folder every day, it's easier to look for the yellow folder to put math homework in. High school, no teacher will tell what color folder to bring. We really don't care. We are probably not teaching your child multiple subjects. The school supply list should get slightly easier by high school. You get the expensive stuff like the graphing calculators and bigger sized backpacks, but you can have more personality in your supplies by then.
@bluz1864
@bluz1864 Жыл бұрын
This is interesting. I found it was the opposite for me when I was in high school. Grade school was really easy - 1 or 2 notebooks per subject (one for notes, one for activities) and occasionally some other things for other subjects - like Language where we had a formal composition notebook. Then again, I'm not from the US so it could be a bit different. Even though I'm not from America, I still want to thank you for not requiring items that will never be used. It's both comforting and frustrating to know that some things are just universal.
@luckdragongirl
@luckdragongirl Жыл бұрын
@@bluz1864 My high school teachers would require things, but they didn't have color specifications. In elementary school, even back in the 90s, we sometimes had to have certain colors.

My daughter is a grade 3 teacher. She invests in a lot of supplies for her kids. The supply requirement is pretty standard and I think out of control of the teachers (at least in elementary school) because it's a Catholic school so all of that is controlled by CISVA here in Vancouver. I remember though EVERY year having to buy NEW stuff when they didn't need it and it drove me mad. (Sorry, but my kids pencil crayons from last year STILL work, why do I need new ones??? Especially since EVERY. SINGLE. ITEM had to be labelled. (Each individual pencil. Imagine how much work to do that for 3 kids. Every year.
@luckdragongirl
@luckdragongirl Жыл бұрын
@@johannaholmgren8088 I forgot about the labeling! My mom used to order pencils from some company that came with our names on them. My brother and I both got them. We always had to buy new crayons or colored pencils too. And they were specific to the amount. I think the biggest box we could have was 16 for crayons and 12 for colored pencils. It was weird. In kindergarten, you also had to have the thicker pencils and thicker crayons. I also remember my kindergarten teacher was upset about my school bag. We didn't have a lot of money, and I was the oldest kid, so I was her first kid in school. She had worked over the summer doing a cross stitch pattern of two mice in like pioneer dresses sitting on a swing, and she sewed a little red bag from scraps of quilted material (that she had made Christmas stockings with) and put the cross stitch pattern on the front. I loved that little bag, but my teacher did not like it. She told my mom that I had to get another bag, a regular bookbag. Keep in mind, this was kindergarten, and all my stuff could fit in that bag without any trouble, and it fit in my cubby at school. It wasn't like high school with a few giant textbooks. Well, my mom had ulcerative colitis, and it got really bad to the point where she had to be put in the hospital and have her colon removed. A lot of nights we (my younger brother and I) ended up sleeping on the floor of my grandparents' house because my dad would be at the hospital. My teacher dropped the subject after she learned about my mom being in the hospital (and she was in the hospital for a couple of months). But I did get a real backpack (so did my brother) for first grade (kindergarten for him). I remember we went to the local Sears outlet and got off-brand backpacks called "The Bag." I wanted green, but they only had red, blue, and yellow. I picked red since my little bag had been red. Then, my brother copied me, so we had matching backpacks. My mom died in 2017 from ovarian cancer. I found the little bag she made for me for kindergarten packed in a tub in storage. I have kept that little bag that a mother worked hard on over the summer from scraps of material for her oldest child to take to school because my parents couldn't afford a backpack.

As a former teacher, when we've given a specific color it is for a system and often when you don't buy that, it ends up being something that we buy out of our pocket. Because, when you've got 30 and more kids, color-coding systems and other systems actually really matter. As a parent myself, I totally get wanting to do fun things for your kids. My solution is to buy the yellow folder and let my kid pick out another one (especially when they are something so small and cheap like a folder).

I was so one of those mom's when my kid's were in school and they are now 20yr💙 and 19yrs❤️ in college but have decided to take a break this semester and try to save money. They both work at the same place..lol..which is funny because they have always done the same kind of activities since they were younger like scouts, sports, clubs and I miss the day's of back to school shopping, making lunches, school events and extracurriculars and now I just get to wash uniform's (because I want too) and see them on their day's off which they do spend with us (usually) so savor those moments with your children because they go fast and no matter how frustrating or stressful it may in the moment they later turn into fond memories that you hope to never forget 💙❤️

Love this! But we reuse our "disposable" plastic baggies- for the more dirty bags just a quick inside out wash, and the ones with just crumbs can be used with a quick shake! My mom is definitely saving the planet with that little contribution lol. It still weirds me out that people throw the regular ones away!

Great humor about going back to school. I really liked your comment, "we only have them for 18 summers..." so true 👍

After watching that back to school parody I was WAITING to see Heidi's reaction. Hahaha. BTW, the eggplant thing on there last is hysterical. My hubby still says stuff like that and we've been married 34 years. Lol

I don't remember ever crying about stuff like outgrowing clothes or moving up a grade. The time I do remember was when Kid 2 signed her college commitment documents... my heart still feels a tug, and that was 10 years ago!
