Helen, thank you for this detailed video! I would be grateful if you could also mention how we can change the color of the herringbone. Thank you in advance for the responce

+yvie212 It is a fun one and it's very different to most other ones as it uses the Pencil tool. I hope you enjoy it.

I am not sure whether I will or not. It's worth subscribing to the channel (shameless plug) so you will hear if and when new videos are launched.

Nice, thanks! Helen, did you try it with the latest version since after we change the canvas size and click on OK then, these edges become so blurry. Look at your time 10:26 of video time, it's fine until then and after that clicking on OK makes it blurry. Thanks

Are you using the correct resample method? You have to use Nearest Neighbor to get sharp edges - it will be fuzzy if you don't use that setting. I just tried it in Photoshop CC 2021 and 2022 for you and the results were just fine. Can you try again and see if it works?

@@HelenBradleyBradley Thank you! Yes, I am using the Nearest Neighbor option to get sharp edges. It is fuzzy. It could be because I am enlarging the image to 9600*9600 and you are enlarging 1000*1000. I just tried it again. It looks perfect in the Preview before I click on OK then it becomes fuzzy. I have the latest version. It updates every day. I am using 23.1.0 version. Thanks

Thanks for the update. Can you try upsizing to 10000 x10000 and see how that looks? Just to see if the change from 1px to 9.6px is the issue. Let me know how that goes? I think it’s the scaling to a fractional number of pixels that is probably the issue here. At least checking an even size scaling will let us prove that the issue is the 9600 x 9600 value and not the program itself (or not!).

@@HelenBradley Thanks! I did try with 10000 but the same results. I called even Adobe but as usual, they don't have properly trained people who never help. Calling Adobe is of no help. I think that I will give up on this. Thanks

Nice reminder of how to create patterns, which I don't do very often. Also, brilliant tutorial in general, as you show reasons for not doing one thing or another, or showing how to do things differently to fit the needs of the viewer. Wish more tutorials were as thoughtful :) The hardest part in creating a pattern (for me) is figuring out the original size of the pattern, in this case 18 px *x* 6 px. Was that trial and error or did you use math, or starting out with the final size of the product you wanted and then simply counting pixels from there? That for me has always been confusing.

+adarkerlight Trial and error is your friend (and mine)! I actually started out with something a bit larger, filled in the pixels and then cropped it to make a pattern that would repeat. Then I worked out the size so I can show you how to do it successfully. Sometimes I use math - but this day my head hurt when I tried to do the math and so I opted for seeing the solution visually instead! Great question!

Helen Bradley Thank you for the great reply, I've always wondered about this. I love trial and error :D

Hi Helen. I have 1 question: Even though we can scale a pattern in Photoshop, there is only so much we can scale while retaining the crispness of the image, since Photoshop is pixel-based, correct? So if I want a much larger herringbone pattern, I need to go back to the pattern tile, draw larger and save it into a new patttern?

Yep. That's right. Photoshop will pixelize things if you increase the size so if you want a large herringbone you need to start with a larger pattern swatch.

Hi, Helen. I love it when you say "that's as easy as it is"after creating the pattern. I follow you but it's a little confusing because like you said a herringbone is not a "V" shape.

+Morgan Field I know - it's funny isn't it - when you look at what a herringbone patten is - it isn't a zig zag shape at all!

Hi, Great video! I have one problem with my pencil tool. It was blurry and transparent. I checked feather being 0, so I don't know how to fix it. Do you know?

Good question. Make sure you are using a square brush and make sure that the Opacity is 100% and the blend mode is Normal. If you still have problems send me a screenshot of your screen including the Tools panel, your brush and the brushes panel so I can see if I can work out what is happening. My email is helen@helenbradley.com
