another reason not to do an evaporator only on r22 is that it uses mineral oil and newer 410a units use POE oil. They don't work well together and therefore better to do all at same time because it is hard to remove all the oil from the evaporator.

I would do the same thing, replace the coil and AC unit, if he doesn’t want to do that, he can get someone else to do it his way, I’ve created more issues for myself trying to help ppl keep their system going doing shortcuts, instead of condemning the system

My heat pump & furnace were installed in 1979 and are still going strong....thanks to the HVAC gods.

@greyhoundude6112

@@joshmason1725 - I can't complain. I live in a modest 1100 square foot home. Average electric bill is around $70 (current bill is $48). Average gas bill is around $40 (current bill $19). Thermostat is set at 68 in the winter and 76 in the summer. I live in a fairly mild climate.

I wonder how efficient your 1979 heat pump is? If you had replaced it in the mid-90s or between 2000 and 2019, it would likely have been more cost-efficient. However, it probably has sentimental value for you.
@greyhoundude6112
@greyhoundude6112 Ай бұрын
@@WWHVAC - Nah, no "sentimental value" for a heat pump or a furnace! Last year the heat pump needed a shot of refrigerant, which restored its performance. I have the furnace inspected every other year and it receives a clean bill of health. I do plan on replacing both units within the next couple of years.

Because the manufacturer that’s makes the equipment says so. The days of changing equipment by the piece are over. And any technician telling you you can is like a stock broker telling to invest in Enron. The smart money is replacing entire systems now while the machines are still available before they’re sold out and not available no more is how you tell those customers. But honest truth the industry is making these drastic changes because of customers like that who keep their equipment way too long. The government and the manufacturers are ripping off the bandaids and forcing these residential customers to upgrade to the new efficiency standards. I feel sorry for the residential and apartments their gonna take a hit.

You talked your way into a situation by assuming it had a leak and going on that that' was most likely the problem when he said he's been filling it yearly. With customers, less is more. Diagnose and verify before having any conversation about repair possibilities.

Always turn your equipment off if it doesn’t work! If I show up to a frozen coil I say “See ya tomorrow.” 😉 It’s like your car if something’s broken you pull it over on the side of the road and turn it off! If your ac is not cooling turn it off, please people. That’s the analogy I use to my customers anyways… A good point to make is HVAC equipment cost is going to go up 30% January 1st 2025 with the new refrigerant coming out…
@WWHVAC

I have a saying that a lot of people don't like but for me it's true. Poor and cheap people are bad for business. They always want to take shortcuts. They want you to install their Ebay and Amazon bought crap. I turn everyone one of them down. Some yell and scream. Curse me out and I just laugh and sometimes I egg them on. I tell them I can't give them a warranty and they all say that's OK but you know they don't really mean it. Some ask me to come out and just do it my way and they return their parts. 95% of my customers are great. It's the 5% that ruin the day.
