These are Heliozoa, single-celled organisms with many arms to give free but deadly hugs! . Heliozoa arms are extensions of its cytoplasm and are used for locomotion and food capture. When a prey organism comes in contact with an arm, it is held tight by the tiny structures on the arm and pulled back to the body of the heliozoan to be wrapped and swallowed. A horrible way to go! . And some in species, different individuals can gather together to digest bigger prey! . 630x magnification, real-time.

Do you worry about getting sick from culturing random pond scum? I have a scope but am reluctant to culture things in jars. I figure they're strong enough as they occur in nature. Maybe you working with these actually increases your resistance? Sort of a microbe hormesis?

The new scope has taken this channel to a whole new level. And it was at a pretty high level before.

Fantastic video. I'm thinking that at this scale most if not all of the remaining tiny creatures (rods and tiny spheres too small in this image to get great detail) are bacteria?
