I don't know if I've ever appreciated a game's sound, acting, and art design more while disagreeing with the choice to make this a direct sequel. I understand why they didn't, but I feel like they should have made Hellblade an anthology, even if they kept the same actress. This is still a game worth playing or watching, but the unreliable nature of the first gets muddled with the added characters and story of the second. Without getting deep into spoilers, the biggest question of the first game is what is or isn't real and if it even matters. With this one, my biggest initial question is the choices other characters are making if certain things aren't real and it matters because the choices they're making if they aren't don't really make much sense. At least not to me at this moment.
@smjsuperscott8 ай бұрын
Yup, I had a similar issue with A Plague Tale 2, where a lot of the subtleness of the first one was completely eroded with the second one's increase in scale. For this, the first one felt like this weird look into the mind of a mentally ill person during an age of myth and legend, where you don't know if the myth is real or if she's having the equivalent of a fever dream in her grief. This one is a weird road trip with some aspects that might be abstract, but I can't consider the giants and as such the supernatural forces of this world to not be firmly real by this point.
@adamlombarovic45837 ай бұрын
I think Senua's companions and people in the world, just like Senua, are going trough this horror experiences, attacks by "Draugr" warriors who perform terrifying rituals, who make themselves appear demonic, vulcanic eruptions (first giant), terrible sea storms (second giant), slavers capturing them... which is affecting them psychologicaly. The scene in the forest, where they are all lost and scared shows this, Senua showing them the way, finding the slaver crying because he's tortured by the things he's done.
@Enjoyurble7 ай бұрын
@@adamlombarovic4583 And mass hysteria is a real phenomenon, but if that's what the game is trying to show it does an incredibly poor job of it. Assuming the two giants are natural events, what exactly does Senua do that leads people to believing she's stopping them and how does she do anything about them considering...they're natural weather events? If they were warriors she was defeating it would be one thing, but if they're NATURAL WEATHER EVENTS it makes practically no sense. The characters even say explicitly Senua knows how to defeat and kill the giants instead of something vague enough that could be construed as something else, like she is finding a way to appease them. If they're weather events, what the heck is she doing to even show that? What does finding a true name of a giant do to stop the events from happening? The second giant barely makes any sense at that point since we see everyone fighting against it. If they wanted to show she was dealing with a weather event, it would have made far more sense to have her and the others trying to build a wall or something to protect the village. Thorgestr specifically tells his father that the giants can be killed, not appeased or anything else. He says he saw two giants turned to stone. It's the language they choose to have the characters say that makes the story not really work the way they want to if the giants aren't real, but then at the end they turn around and have Senua say they aren't. Why wasn't she saying that to the companions before? Not to mention, the ending is insanely rushed. Keep in mind she's never even been to that village but she's going to show them that the giants don't exist by...killing their leader? That's the thing. They could have set up the story and the idea that the giants weren't real from the start and have her "confronting" them while showing others that they weren't real, building up to confronting the man who was spreading the lies. Instead, they just had her drop it during the last battle despite all the things everyone, including her, has said during the rest of the game. It's a beautiful game and a potentially beautiful story, but it's absolutely not told well.
@adamlombarovic45837 ай бұрын
@@Enjoyurble ok, concerning the second "giant" i noticed something rewatching the fight. While they are running out of the cave after they attack him, one of the tribesman shouts... DRAUGR!... they arent fighting a giant, Senua is leading them to fight Draugr warriors. I think its about superstition, people around Senua really believe this giants exist and some even that they saw them, just like sailors thought they saw mermaids or a kraken. Things they cant explain, they explain as supernatural. Senua first performs a ritual by finding a baby skeleton, calming the first "giant", as a "seer"and then leads them to fight the Draugr, the second "giant".
@Enjoyurble7 ай бұрын
@@adamlombarovic4583 A draugr is an undead creature. We see one large undead giant. So, people yelling DRAUGR actually does more to imply what we're seeing is real than that they're fighting a group of warriors. Not to mention the draugr destroys part of the village. Senua is an outsider whose people are considered so worthless they're viewed as slaves and sacrifices, so whatever "rituals" she's performing have to come off as stronger than their beliefs and, again, if they're natural events, has to coincide with those events stopping. You also avoid that during the last battle, SHE'S SAYING that giants aren't real. Why is she saying that at that point after "killing" the first two giants, but not once talking to anyone else about them not being real? Like I've already said, I understand what they were going for and appreciate many aspects of it, but they did a MUCH poorer job of telling the story in this game than they did in the last.

Something i think is lost in this game is that in Hellblade 1, due to Senuas psychosis, you never knew if what Senua was facing was real or not, but due to the presence of NPCs in H2, i guess she really DID fight all those gods and monsters from the first game, since everyone else in this one is seeing giants apparently...
@missmusic49514 ай бұрын
The recap over the first game that's at the beginning of this one clarifies that the bare bones of the first story happened but there's still a looot of questions about what she did and did not experience in that one. It's more clear in the second game because of how far she's come in coping with her psychosis, she has more control and more of a grip on reality. And we go into this game already knowing her past, whereas the first game was about trying to separate what was psychosis and what was her trauma, which gives us a firmer grip on reality too.

People shitting on the game because of the duration is not even the target audience. Who probably didn't even play the first one and doesn't like of story-driven games like Death Stranding or Metal Gear Solid because has so much dialogues. Props for Ninja Theory for crafting such an unique gaming experience. The only issue for me wasn't the duration but the lack of variety of challenges when it comes to the first two giants, defeating them basically in the same way was repeatitive.

MGS actually has amazing, free and innovate gameplay. It was the most insane thing back when MGS2 and 3 came out for the PS2. This shit doesn't have any of that, it's just cutscene after cutscene, no interaction with the environment, ultra limited combat, walking from point A to B, hell even Ground Zeroes which was a demo gives many hours of fun thanks to the gameplay unlike this one. I ll admit it, while I looked forward to playing the game, the whole experience quickly became dull and frustrating :/ Between the combat that is fast-paced and intense only when I don't have any input to make, the story that feels fake with the giants devastating the lands but oh wait the last one is just an evil dude suddenly its a metaphor, the puzzle that felt like they were here to allow for a set amount of dialogue/exposition from Senua's innervoices, instead of being truly linked to the story like the first 1. Cherry on the top is when there were narrow corridors or long climbs, having to go through 2-3 minutes of my life pressing "forward" and desperately waiting for the animation to roll... Idk man, is Senua a grandma, or a warrior? Very disappointed in the game overall, I was expecting more.
@missmusic49514 ай бұрын
Did you play the first one? It's been *extremely* metaphorical the whole time, through pretty much every minute of both games. Every conflict, location, and relationship serves as a metaphor for Senua's past or present struggle. To find out that the king was the cause of the land's misery makes all the sense in the world when you know that Senua's most fundamental trauma comes from her father's abuse.
@LXV-e9d8 ай бұрын
To anyone who’s played this, what are your honest thoughts? I’ve played about an hour and I’m STRUGGLING to be entertained. Is it even worth continuing? I enjoy the combat and graphics but that’s it. I dropped the first game because I was bored to death and it feels like I’ll have to do the same with this one. There’s just so much nothing happening here. Slowly walk up a beach. Slowly crawl through an area. Walk around for 15 minutes trying to find a random symbol to match up because that’s totally fun. The story is both bland and boring but also confusing and convoluted at the same time. It’s like the story is trying to trick you into thinking it’s being clever by shoving a bunch of random nonsense down your throat. You’d think with a game this short they would’ve cut out the bs and there’d be more actual entertainment but I guess not.
@litchi4088 ай бұрын
Yeah to sum it up, thats exactly that. They took everything that was great in the first game, and toned its efficiency down. In the firts game, we could say it was based in reality, felt believable. She did fight monsters but they were all either symbols of fear, or trauma she had to face to heal from her grief. now its sequel have you face real giants that are devastating the lands, but then the whole concept gets turned around to become some sort of metaphor for turning into a monster due to pain/whatever life throws at you. The ending felt like a shonen, almost. Structurally speaking Hellblade 2 is a pale copy of the first one, deffinitely suffers from the sequel syndrom you can see in movies sometimes. since the first game didn't do it for you this one didn't stand a chance I'd say, can't be worth it if you're rolling your eyes when playing it
@DantesHQ8 ай бұрын
I personally loved the game, but I can agree with comments like this. Instead of more walking and boring puzzles give us more combat, cool NPCs or things to explore. I can walk for 10 minutes to my next destination listening to the voices, but if I have to do that 10 or 20 times during a 6 hour playthrough then I just get bored/annoyed. It would've been at least somewhat interesting if we got something cool/different to look at, but instead its just nature, hills, abandoned hoses, sea and giant mountains.

I've been waiting for 2 years, I downloaded it today and finished it. I can say that the story is designed for people with a kind soul in the world of imagination, rather than some completely ordinary stories, and has a sad story. It is a game that Sennua cannot avoid, no matter who the characters are, whose realities and reflections do not hold a mirror to her past and future as she plays. As someone who has experienced many games with story and single player, my score is 10/9, I take 1 point aside, it is a work of art at the top among its equivalent games, yes that's right, it is a work of art, I hope you have a good time :)

This is brilliant. The story has developed, the protagonist evolved, the path was shown that not everything can be solved only by weapons. The cinematics of the fights is nothing I have seen in any other games. Not only the inner struggle of Senua is shown, but that of the antagonists too. In the end of the first chapter we might have thought that all the mystic was just in Senua's head, but in the new chapter it has been given a new life. The beauty and the meaning is incredibly well shown. I absolutely love it, not a bit less than the first game.
