Hellboy 2 is far more interesting than the first one. The first movie deals with Nazi experiments, undead sorcerers, ancient demons, and dark gods; Hellboy 2 deals with more fantasy-type creatures that also exist in this same world. Having Lovecraftian horrors and occult magic share the same world as more Tolkien-esque beings is a fascinating concept. Having the son of the devil interact with both is an excellent concept. That there was never a Hellboy 3 is the biggest failure of Del Toro’s career.

You're right, Mr. Movies, The Hellboy Universe leaned heavily into H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. The quote at the beginning was from De Vermis Mysteriis - a supposed magic book created by Lovecraft (along with the Necronomican seen in the Evil Dead series). The final monster was also a Lovecraftian monster callee, Shude M'ell. I think its kind of funny that Mrs Movies is such a believer in the paranormal that she can't even really enjoy a movie like this because of it. It's okay, Mrs. Movies, these aren't Biblical Demons. Just stuff from a comic, based around the works of a pulp writer from the 20s and 30s. Guillermo del Toro is also a huge Lovecraft fan.

In more than a few demonic/devil lore styles there's a thing about "true" names. The names of demons that are known are usually something coined by others or adopted by the demons themselves. But their true names is their power AND their weakness. By speaking their true names the demon gains power OR someone else gains power over them. It's a thing that is rearranged for whichever story is being told. There are even some lore suggesting that this also affects God's as well.

Great reaction, to one of my main favorite superhero movies. The first Hellboy movie was just outstanding, on my perspective. And honestly it was thanks to this movie that I was introduced to Hellboy and decided to read up more of his comics. I remember watching this movie when I was like 5 or 6 years old. I even remember by then that I had a Hellboy action figure that they release out like a year later after the movie was released on 2004. Ron Perlman acting is just perfect as Hellboy, even until today he is still my favorite version of Hellboy out of David Harbour from the 2019 film and Jack Kesy from the upcoming movie of this year "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" Although people say that this new version is the most closet one to his physical appeareance on the comics. I have to say that they got a point on that if we compare side to side. Still though I prefer Perlman's Hellboy since I am more of a nostalgic fan and remembering this Hellboy is like returing me back to my childhood. I also loved the designs of the main villains, like Karl Ruprecht Kroenen and Samael, I think they were the most interesting ones out of Rasputin who was the main antagonist of this film. Specially for Karl since his nazi outfit and masks just gave him a badass look. 1:12 I died, think that is a pornstar. 😂😂😂

As much as I love the two Perlman Hellboy movies, I find myself rolling my eyes sometimes at how much they changed from the comics, particularly in this first movie, where the changes they made clash HARD with what otherwise works pretty well as an introduction to the central conflict of the Hellboy/BPRD saga. Characterization, relationships, and crucial elements of the worldbuilding are changed pretty dramatically for the sake of giving the adaptation more mass appeal (essentially what the movie gives us is closer to Men In Black than Hellboy), while the source material honestly feels like it was designed to be rather niche and obscure - like its creator put his heart and soul into something uniquely his rather than chase the usual superhero trends for the money. The second movie is telling a completely different story from anything we've seen in the comics, and the completely new direction gels much more with the changes mentioned above. As such, Hellboy 2 manages to be a much more charming and heartfelt film.

Eventually, Sarah (carrying Hellboy's essence) rejected Azzael and tried to save her soul from Hell, but Azzael collected her soul when Sarah was on her deathbed in 1617; Hellboy was, finally born (in Hell) that very night, after her soul was destroyed. and he would be, eventually, brought back to earth in the 1940's.

"I made a tower..." My first though: she is trying to invoke the monster of the movie XD. Just kidding; nice tower :). "Saying his name activated the chains?" That's, actually, a real piece of many folklores under the general concept of "names of power". Those folklores indicate every thing (living or not) has a real name, a hidden name, tied to its identity and vital energy. Whoever that knows and says that name, has power of the entity or thing (hence "name of power" and why it's originally a secret). Knowing a name of power gives you almost absolute control over the entity it belongs to, if you carve it in chains; the entity has no power to break them unless it does any condition you've put to the spell/test. Hellboy's infernal name (Anung un Rama) is a made up language, but it does have an english translation along the lines of "the destroyer of worlds" and "He who, upon his brow, has a crown of flames" (the second one is important, because is a part of another comic story). Nice reaction :).
