I just watched Hellboy the crooked man a few days ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a pretty spooky witch horror film for sure. I will always love the first two Hellboy movies and the performance and the third one was solid, but this one is by far my favorite. I also really like Jack’s performance as Hellboy. He’s no Ron Pearlman, but I don’t think he was trying to be. He played the character very understated and subtle. He was more tragic, and I really appreciated that.
@Cab04083 ай бұрын
Actually I feel as though his performance was heavily influenced by Perlman. Kesy seemed like a younger version of Perlman's Hellboy.

as someone who read all the hell boy comics I had a good time with it. It was loads better than the 2019 one too. I gave the vfx a pass because I knew it. and wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. In defense of no one being surprised by hellboy appearance, its like that in the comics most the time. People dont freak out about him. I also liked Kesy's performance. He does not feel like pearlmans version at all. He feels more subdued. I love the del toros version but it is not much like comics at all. Both versions are good in their own way. I woulda paid to see this in the theaters, I got what I wanted outta it.

@mrbeast853 ай бұрын
I saw this the other week. I didn't hate it. The biggest impression I got from it was of an extended pilot for a TV show rather than a proper movie. It also felt like a work in progress, a proof of concept awaiting more polish and development. It was very padded at times with scenes seemingly artificially extended, lots of wandering around in the woods, overuse of 'atmospheric' establishing shots. I quite liked some of the elements here though; the Crooked Man has potential to be pretty creepy villain but they held back on his appearance, I think they could have made him far more horrific! I liked the self contained nature of the film, not everything has to have world saving stakes. I thought Kesy was serviceable as the titular character, not terrible but yes I don't think there's much for him to work with. But it does have lots of issues and the CGI sucks.
@michaelwinchester50033 ай бұрын
I'm honestly a little shocked that they haven't tried to do a Hellboy TV show. Hellboy, his side characters, and his adventures would work really well in a TV format. Just picture a gothic, neo-noir, horror monster of the week cartoon series about Hellboy. It could be great!
@mrbeast853 ай бұрын
@@michaelwinchester5003 I think Hellboy would make an awesome 'Monster of the week' style series. I always enjoyed that type of X-Files episode the most. I think there's a bit of fatigue growing amongst audiences with long story arc shows, where every episode has to build into something bigger. Give people something they can dip in an out of, throw in a few 2 parters, like Star Trek and one for the end of season. Perhaps they could get Guillermo del Toro to be the show runner and director for a few episodes?

What happened was that the del Toro-movies sadly weren't that successful. They didn't bomb, but they were clearly not what the studio wanted. And then Iron Man and the Dark Knight were released the same year as The Golden Army and blew everything away. So no wonder there never was a third one. The animated ones were great too, but it was clear they wouldn't have a huge audience either.

2:54 - 3:12 It's sad when out films like Jonah Hex and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the only somewhat successful comic book adaptation is Brian Taylor's series about a cop turned hitman, played by Law and Order's Elliott Stabler, who has an imaginary flying blue unicorn sidekick voiced by Mark Patton, aka, *Happy!* This film's quality feels like those wrak direct to video sequels to flicks like 30 Days of Night, or R.I.P.D. which we also never asked for. If they wanna do a smaller scale Hellboy story, I have no problem, but maybe try for a tv series rather than a weak limited theatrical release.

Like this, it feels like a 'straight to streaming' film and had no business being in cinemas. 12:27 Millennium Media seem to have declined even from there 2010's level to later Canon or Menahem Golan's successor studio '21st Century Film Corporation' which made films of the quality of 'Bullseye!', 1990's 'Captain America' and 'Death Wish 5'. 14:07 There is good movies that use Chapters [like 'Kill Bill' or recently 'Furiosa'].

It would make sense in the way that people would be even less inclined to see a Hellboy-movie with a budget even lower than that, considering you need a lot of practical effects and CGI even if it's not on the same level as the del Toro-movies. Then again saying that it cost 20 mio. when it was way cheaper doesn't look too good from the pow of investors who then see an even bigger flop then it really was. Which is why movie studios normally tend to hide the true budget, especially by not including the marketing costs. This way a flop doesn't look that huge ... So who knows?

Considering the second movie isn't really a Hellboy movie, it's a GDT movie with Hellboy characters crudely inserted into it, I completely understand why Mike took the IP from GDT. It's not representative of the character in the comics. This reviewers issue that Hellboy is "just some guy" in the movie is a testament to that because that's how Hellboy is portrayed in the comics and even the most recent video game. In GDTs films he's presented like a temperamental toddler because red = angry lol

Have you read the comics? That's a terrible idea, regardless of whether or not you liked them the del Toro films failed financially and were not what Mignola had in mind when creating the character. As a fan of the comics and someone who had liked Del Toro's version of Big Red, I was somewhat interested in seeing this adapation, especially since it was originally drawn by the legendary underground cartoonist, Richard Corben, and it being Mike Mignola's (Hellboy's creator) favorite story that he's done with the character. Sad to hear from you and others online the film doesn't seem too good. Did they credit Corben in the credits btw? I'm not seeing his name credited anywhere online, though if the film is that bad maybe that's a good thing. I'd hope that his family got some money out of this, at least. I should say that the reason everyone is completely chill with Hellboy's appearance is because in the comics Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. have been known by the greater part of the world since the end of the WWII. Though, it sounds like the film doesn't establish that fact too well, other than the mention of Hellboy being on the cover of Life magazine (which was a fact taken from the original Crooked Man comic) and that the earlier, more well-known Del Toro films had it where Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. were a secret that no one knew about. I also checked the original Crooked Man comic again and there isn't any line or scene where Hellboy fights a snake and says, "Ok snake, let's rattle!" Plus, there wasn't any other B.P.R.D. agents in the story, other than Hellboy. I haven't kept up with some of the recent comics, but I know they did introduce a character who was a love interest for Hellboy. So, maybe the filmmakers felt they needed some sort of romance to appeal to a more mainstream audience? I don't know. Good review, Mathew!👏

Yes the cgi was bad (looking at you funnel spider fight) but worse was the editing. So many random things that never went anywhere. Why did the preacher have a deal with the crooked man? Why did the Asian lady not wear better clothing? (she would of been a kid through WW2, no way she won't dress proper after the racism of Pearl Harbor), why is the lucky bone bad then suddenly a good thing? How can the crooked man take a soul from hell against Satan's wishes? Why was the Asian lady suddenly crawling in a hole while in the mines? Why can she suddenly use powers? Why is their a forced love sub-plot? All that said it felt closer to the comic than the mess of the 2019 film.

Never heard that there was a new movie. Pretty sure it wasn't shown in any cinema here in Germany either. But yeah, no wonder ... So thanks for introducing me to this piece of garbage. I guess most Hellboy-interested people will just find this when they look for the del Toro-movies on streaming-services or maybe even the 2019-version (which i'm still convinced cursed us with a certain virus). They will at least generate a little bit of money when people click on it out of curiosity. It pretty much looks like a movie just created to keep the rights, but considering we had a movie just five years ago that seems unlikely. But if it really was made for the rights then i'm asking WHY? I mean i can understand it with IPs that were successful in the past, but you want to wait a few more years for whatever reason untill making a new big installment. But even the beloved del Toro-movies sadly didn't make that much, 2019 was a desaster - and now they are throwing 20 million again in the garbage just for the chance to go on in the future? Is it realistic that there will be a blockbuster-Hellboy in let's say ten years? Not really ... But then again i'm clearly not as smart as those Millenium-executives. You probably think what Del Toro did is peak potential of Hellboy's character development... him being immature, secluded in a government facility, mystically surrounded by kitties. Oh, and the twins, I wonder what happened to the twins...! You probably think too that Ron Pearlman as the great actor he is created Hellboy's personality, he came out with that stuff out of thin air without considering the source material... so whenever someone sounds like Hellboy, for you they are doing a Ron Pearlman's impression.

@@kingvejita8827 That's too bad because the Hellboy comics are so much better than the movie adaptations. But it matters for a review, if the reviewer says for example "the new actor is doing a Ron Pearlman impression", when most of what Ron Pearlman did was already in the comics. So when something in the new movie adaptation resembles the comic an ignorant reviewer would say "the new guy is doing a Ron Pearlman impression" instead of "Hellboy does that in the comics, he's not a clown like in the 2019 film".

I feel you are being way too harsh on this film especially saying it's lesser compared to the last one, more people should give it a chance. It's not trying to ape the Del Torro films but recreate the comics, it's aiming for the horror that should be in a Hellboy film and on a fraction of the budget (which for me is worth supporting - it's not slap dash there is definitely care and respect for the property here.) This film felt the most like the comics than any of the other live versions, I love the first two films but Mignolia is right they never got the atmosphere right. For a low budget film apart from from a few ropey effects at the beginning and a bit to much of digital washed out colour correction added to it in the day time scenes (but worked well for the interiors and night scenes), it was shot beautifully at times, acted quite well and had the dirty and creepy feel it needed. People seem to just want to not like this because of the Del Torro films (which Again I also love) which is unfair. This was a well shot low budget comic horror film and to me could act as a great pilot for a well made limited series from the same creators. Seeing comments slagging it off without even seeing it is quite depressing, just using your unfair negative play by play of the film. Review it not recap it.

I wouldn't say I was play-by-playing plot points here. I have done that in some other reviews, but I'm more trying to talk about specific elements or sequences than the actual plot. As I said, a version like this would be great, if they were actually given the resources to pull it off properly. I do think people are viewing this more kindly because they're seeing it at home. On a cinema screen, all the flaws - especially the abysmal colour grading, and general dark appearance - are magnified. I'm glad it has found an audience, which appears to be mostly the die-hard fans of the comic, but it wasn't for me, IMO.
@Nah_Mate_Aint_Nowt3 ай бұрын
@@FilmBrain Mate that's fair enough and I see where you were coming from, that colour grade and opening effects did let it down a bit, I just thought it had far more positives than you gave it credit for. Just felt like a step in the right direction for the franchise and should be encouraged (lower budget, less risk of studio interference trying to 'sell it' better - Alien Romulus reeked of it and all the worse for it) - also it's not just Marvel or DC there are so many comics out there that are not just superhero fodder (for me I think comic properties should be going in the limited series direction anyway and away from the cinema - comics themselves are episodic in nature just fits better - a lot of the Marvel series' have been far better than a lot of the recent films) but saying it was worse than the last film was a bit too much for me - rubbed me the wrong way. There was way more artistry and vision to this one, the del Torro films introduced me to the comics, seemed a shame to knock this film down for being more comic and less del Torro. Cheers for replying though much appreciated

I have to disagree. I loved the movie. So far, the best for me. But I am a big fan of the comics, and it seems the De Toro fans are the most unhappy with the movie. The people on the fan page I am on are mostly very happy with positive reviews. This movie is definitely made for the comic book fans. I think the B-movie treatment fits the story and the comic very well. Kesy's Hellboy is also closer to the comic for me. My new favorite. I feelpeople are complaining too much about budget and vfx. Marvel has created viewers who can't enjoy a movie if it is not shiny and overproduced. But tastes differ.😊

Do you like the disaster film day after tommorow that was a good movie that had realism and involving drama and emotions and wasn’t entirely ridiculous what do you have to say to that?
@kingvejita88273 ай бұрын
''it needed a bigger budget'' nah , if this is what u make with a small budget than why should u get a bigger one ? its not the props, makeup or whatever that made this movie shit, its the story and the events in it... u can look at an old movie and say ''the effects are the worst thing about it but that was the period it was made in'' and u can also say ''what ? this really was made in xx ? cant believe it, it looks so good for its time period''

I loved all the Hellboy movies (they are fun) but this 1 was just... kinda boring and a waste of time (i watched the animated ones after this 1 hoping they were better but meh, if this is a 5 those are a 5.1 and 5.2) i dont care that it had a small budget or about who ever plays Hellboy as long as he looks the part, they just could have done it much better with what they had

Kill that guy in the 1st scene and not even a single word about it ? (i get what the job is but fudging hell it just comes off as obvious canon fodder) what the fudge are this accents ? half the time i cant understand what the fudge they are saying (i know i wont be the only 1) the thing with the witch telling us what a ''witch ball'' is was just... WHY ? it was so out of nowhere and i cant even remember if we saw that old witch again

The crooked Man just wasnt that creepy and scary, we should have only seen his silhouette and shadow/blurr, after we see his face he does that neck thing so many times its like ''wow isnt it scary and creepy?'' and no it just comes of as a kid doing weird things trying to scare other kids
@kingvejita88273 ай бұрын
The chick... what was the point of her being in this movie ? what did she contribute to the story ? she goes into the tunnels to destroy them and make the crook weaker but she fails and ends up saved by a d34d Man (and u cant tell me that she succeded cuz there is no sign that the crooked man got weaker) ''she looks at the spider'' rawr ! ''looks away'' pause ''looks again at the spider'' RAWR ! wtf was that ? the spider that was hyperactive and murderous in the 1st part was just standing there and making noises
@kingvejita88273 ай бұрын
What was the point of the mother ? she was just there , he doesnt save her or get any clues about where she might be or why he was born, its just a waste of screen time... the zombie fight was just lame and a turn off and the final fight... whats there to say about it ? Underwhelming as hell !

Compared to some things bigger studios have released recently the “bad visuals” really aren’t that bad the movie looks fine and guys Del Toro made 1 ok Hellboy film and turned his character into a love struck puppy that stalks his love interest from the roof tops instead of doing anything important TLDR; the new hell boy movie is great and I love it

The real Crooked Man is Mike Mignola, who vetoed a 3rd GDT film in lieu of 2 low rent reboots. His disdain for the 2 good HB films is baffling
@jikorijo45163 ай бұрын
Is there a source for Mignola vetoing a 3rd Del Toro film? I've never heard that piece of info.
@NovaPrimo1193 ай бұрын
@@jikorijo4516 no source. Just GDT fans not being able to cope with the fact that Perlman is 74 Selma Blair has MS and the studios do not want to fund a Hellboy 3

I suppose Mignola not liking the Del Toro films is a bit like Tom Clancy's disliking the two Harrison Ford-Philip Noyce Jack Ryan films despite them being well received critically [he felt Ford was too old for the part for example].
