They literally gave us what we asked for as Hellboy fans and we spat in their faces I don’t expect any more Hellboy content for a while and whats really sad is yea it’s low budget because that studio was the only one who was willing to take it up and it’s a good movie and followed the comics amazingly

It's interesting, that you mention Del Toro getting closer to the overall tone of the comics. While I love those movies, the tone is way off. They're "superhero movies," big, bombastic, and over the top. The comics are dark and macabre. This movie got closer to the general feel of the books, although it is still way off, IMO. I liked the movie, but nothing much really happens. I hope it gets a sequel because I think they're on to a good thing here. It wasn't scary and I was hoping it would be, that was a disappointment. It would definitely work better as a TV show!
@DiegoReviews3 ай бұрын
I should’ve been more specific! When I said that Del Toro gets closer, I mean from aesthetic standpoint. Crooked Man has kind of a desaturated and grayish look. While Del Toro’s (at least the first film) has heavier shadows and contrasting colors more consistently throughout the movie.

Personally, I loved it. I've been really excited for it, and I had that sucker pre ordered on iTunes the second I found out when it was going to streaming lol. And finally watching it, well, as I said, I enjoyed it. I love how it goes into more, horror than the action packed stuff we've had, and I love the atmosphere of the movie. And the acting in it is really good, especially Jack Kesy as Hellboy. Dude literally carries this movie. And as Hellboy, he really was awesome, I think my favorite scene of his as Hellboy was when they meet the Crooked Man for the first time and he was not having it. Like, to me, that was badass. And honestly, it had some creepy visuals at times. I will say, you can definitely feel the low budget on it. But they make it work. Honestly, if this gets a Blu Ray release, I'm buying it. I loved it that much honestly.

1 month in and it's now 4/10 The cgi was garbage, the edits were awful, pacing was too slow and to top it off the "scary" atmosphere isn't executed well at all. If you really like the movie you must have no taste from what Hellboy was. There are scenes from a movie in the 2000s are better than the entire mess we have in 2024 2019 was the End for hellboy, should've stayed that way. And here you both are talking about how making the movie BLACK AND WHITE to make it look better. Sheesh how desperate can you be?

Read the comic and watch it again, will enjoy the movie much more and appreciate how the vibe is captured successfully. I think it just need to work on the post editing and cinematography a bit more, which maybe they didn't have enough budget for.

Finally someone gets it. This is pretty much what hellboy is. Most of the haters just wanted another MCU hellboy or Guillermo del Toro's Neverending story Hellboy.

Relating to your criticism of the lack of real scares and tension: the movie's greatest weakness (in my opinion) was that it adapted the comic storyline **too closely.** The filmmakers were clearly making an effort to include as many details as possible from the original, and I sympathize, but the end result was too "busy," and lacked the kind of pacing and focus that make for an effective horror movie. That said, I thought they knocked it out of the park with the church scene. Naming no names, I think this was a great adaptation compared to some of the sci-fi/fantasy media that have come out lately. I liked it better than the last 3 or 4 Marvel movies I watched, for example -- whoops, I said "naming no names," but apparently I couldn't stop myself. Hellboy as a character felt like he was still finding his feet, but that makes sense given that it was 1959 (he'd been "born" less than 20 years earlier, and it's well established that he ages/matures slower than regular humans). Also, quick quibble: the geographic setting was somewhere in Appalachia's coal country, probably West Virginia or eastern Kentucky. (The coalfields do extend as far south as Birmingham, AL, but as you get down into that area, they trend westward away from the mountains. Also, the Crooked Man's backstory makes more sense if it took place in a Civil War border state.)

I gave it a good shot, but got terribly bored àbout half way through. Hellboy himself was a good character, but, for me, I was bored by the antagonists, the Woodland setting, the Witches, and too little action.....I skipped through the rest.

I enjoyed how accurate it was to the comic, besides the fact that the only black character in the story dies, whereas his comic book counterpart did not. The tragic thing is, this was originally supposed to be a tv pilot, it had a tv budget, it was a stupid idea to pad it out and release it as a movie..movie fans hate it because they’re expecting “movie” action hero Hellboy when it’s not, it’s comic Hellboy..unlike the movies the comics are generally smaller gothic/folk horror themed short stories..which would work so much better as a tv series..I thought they nailed the comic tone pretty well and I’d be totally onboard with a tv series with the same crew involved

A faithful adaptation of MM's World of Hellboy. A solid 6.1 for a straight to VOD I fully appreciated the aesthetic, shorter run time, and simpler storytelling without the need for unnecessary big-set pieces. Even though some of the CGI was suspect it wasn't distracting enough to take me out of the story, unlike some big-budget gaffes like Superman's CGI mouth. Maybe a few more shadows and a ( Alien ) less is more approach, would have been better choices. Hellboy would make for a great Netflix or HBO mini-series and have MM co-write the scripts like he did with this movie.

@Scifi4life fuck "broad appeal." You sound like a marketing manager not a comic book fan. If anything, films like this need to exist in this space to counter balance the watered-down assembly line adaptations of the MCU.
@Scifi4life3 ай бұрын
@joeabernathy5402 studios need to make money. Maybe you don't understand that, so thank goodness you don't work in Hollywood. You would make your movie studio go broke. I'm not saying every film should have a 350 million dollar budget like avatar films. I'm saying with today's technology, effects, and talent, low budget films do not have to look like shitty crooked man.
