When a boy turns 13 in Scandinavia, he receives one of these knives as a gift and told to go circumcise himself in the backroom. They're purely ceremonial.

Knives becoming more vanity and less utility is completely accurate. I really notice it with the expensive Spyderco sprints. Guys buy it because "it can cut forever and take abuse" but then they never use it hard cause they don't want to scratch their $200 knife. LMAO it's jewelry for dudes.
@poopshootpoop75315 жыл бұрын
That's exactly the truth. I started with a delica, thought i wasn't fancy enough so got a pm2, then found out about Sprint runs and bought several of them of both pm2 and pm3, never used them, sold them all, now back to the delica lol

You're right, traditionally you used penny knives or Barlow's for most of your wood carving type tasks, fixed blades were for processing game, fighting bears and amicably dealing with disputes during card games. Yes, the "man jewellery" hypothesis. I have noticed many of the $300+ knives out there are seldom used for long before they end up in a jewelry box semi permanently. Then again, a Mora is more likely to end up as landfill than a Helle. I'm sure there's a happy medium between landfill and jewelry box.

Dryer lent is awesome! I have been harrassing my wife and kids for years with it. If you shape it just right its amazing how much it resembles a mouse or rat, especially if you tie a small string to it hide it under the couch or somewhere and make it look as if its running out(yes this is my sad life). My kids affectionately named it lenty ;)

I just got a HELLE GT and will be using it as my hunting knife for skinning and boneing deer and elk to pack out. It will replace my 1990s Gerber Parabellum lock blade. It is a "true" Gerber, before Fiskars bought it out. This HELLE laminated blade reminds me of the custom Moreseth laminated blade knives (which sold for 3 times the GT price!). Anyway, beautiful knife at a very reasonable price. The excellent sheath is just a bonus. I plan to add a 1/4" thick slice of shaped elk horn to the pommel to cover the tang stud and also extend the grip a little. I'll use JB WELD 2 part epoxy to glue it to the pommel. It will just add to the knife's beauty and make it customized. After all, a good knife is a very personal item with pride of ownership beyond what a mere "tool" would engender.

Mora sheaths....I have a love hate relationship with. holds the knife securely doesn't dull the blade and despite being ugly tend to be rather robust.....other knife manufactures should take note. How many have sold knives with sheaths that are "glass reinforced" and dull the shit out of the blade; it's maddening!

Have had my Helle GT for ten years now, has ridden on my hip that whole time and been my daily knife the entire time. It's stood up well to a whole decades worth of almost daily use and occasional hard misuse/abuse, and lots and lots of rain and cold, blood, guts, greenwood and dry. Biggest gripe is the button on the sheath, in 2015 the cup part of the button that receives the protruding lower part and snaps together came off, but not the outer portion of it that says Helle. I had to take a button off my Condor village parang sheath to do a field repair. (Thanks multi-tool) Almost lost it because of that failure, due to its looseness in the sheath. Also, the inside part of the lower half of the button that touches the knife handle, it chafes it and wears off what you treat your handle with and leaves metal residue. Not a big deal. Had forgotten the outside of the button that says Helle was originally dark in color, mine lost that coating long ago and is shiny brass now. Forgot the sheath was such a light brown, too, mine has aged into a near black brown. Never even thought about scratching up the shiny outer layer, looking at mine I guess its very scratched, but if you're worried about that, what the hell do you have a knife for? You don't have to baby this knife, and as long as you have a brain and use it within' its range of use and give it the little maintenance it needs, based on my experience with it, it should last you a decade or longer granted they have not changed how they produce them between 2012 and 2022. Though the lack of 90° spine has never been an inconvenience to me, I think I might grind that down, would be a welcome addition this late in the game, and even if I don't use it for a ferro rod, it'll add a kick for all the debarking I do with it. Honestly didn't think this knife would survive this long, but it still definitely has years of life left in it.

Either way I own a Helle Safari and I love it for a basic camp/ fucking-around-in-the-yard work. Mine does have a 90degree spine however. And the handle is SLIGHTLY different and looks like they improved it a little bit.

Slather that Harding's handle in oil, it'll turn the oak ends a deep dark brown. (Yours looks incredibly dry). I used linseed oil on mine & then Walrus Oil Wood Wax; a gorgeous transformation! I stained the sheath to match the knife's handle with a cordova dye; both are a rich dark brown. I save my Harding for delicate jobs or food prep work & use my Mora Black for rough & tough tasks. Honestly, I use the Mora a hell of a lot more. It's the Timex watch of knives. The Harding is too pretty to beat on, & too delicate in my opinion. The Mora is blue collar & the Helle is white collar.

The one thing I’ve ALWAYS disliked about that knife company is it’s HELLE inconsistent QC. Like I noticed that blade centering on my spydeco military is a tad off, or that the grind on my Esee is every so slightly wavy, but those aren’t issues with the knives. They don’t affect performance. But almost every single Helle that I have ever handle has had glaring issues with handle fitment. So much so that I have believed liquids could accumulate against the tang and potentially cause catastrophic tang failure sometime down the line. It’s almost like they are more worried about making sure the outside look nice that they neglect the internal, structural fits. Because of that and the fact that all of their handles are too bulbous for me has kept me from buying one the their knives, regardless how much as i really want one. I hope your knife is one of the few that didn’t need a wood putty seal job right off the bat.

So much cynicism and sarcasm by the reviewer and his fanboys in the comments section. As well as owning some cheaper and admittedly sturdier bushcraft knives, I also own a Helle Eggen & a GT. Plenty durable enough for every bushcraft chore bar perhaps battoning, yet a pleasure to feel in my hand and look at. Why not also have a thing of beauty? Norwegians have been using these knives in the wild for a long time. Some of you baulk at spending this kind of money compared to a Mora. Well, some people drive a luxury car instead of catching the bus. They all end up in the same place. So what’s your point? Let go of the “I’m a hard man that only wipes my arse with thorns and brushes my teeth with Chuck Norris’ spunk” attitude. You’re not coming across as impressive or knowledgeable as you think you are. 😉
