In a film that literally starts with the guy that sings this song literally murdering a woman in cold blood on-screen. I was not allowed to watch this as a child and when I watched it as a teenager and saw Quasimodo's mother with her broken neck in the stairs of the church I was like "WhAT???"

Back in the day, I took my young son to see this Disney movie in the theater and sat cringing the whole time. I did not feel like most of the themes and content were appropriate for children. @@bernicemaurice The content, debatable, depending on the child's age. But the themes of fighting racism and injustice, not falling victim to prejudice, etc are absolutely things that children should learn. And in my opinion, also that just because someone is an authority figure doesn't mean they're necessarily in the right, and that you can do evil even if you think it's justified. @@laurenw4301here's my question for you, who is the most misunderstood Disney villain. I personally think it's Gaston, yeah he was arrogant and a bit of a prude. But being misogynistic back then was kind of a telltale part of the times, and if a girl came to you and said that she fell in love with a giant 7 ft beast that could rip you in half I'm pretty sure we'd all go out there and try to kill it. And ostracize her for bestiality

@@laurenw4301 I think, Frollo is such a terrifying villain, because he is a very realistic one. Not a fantasy villain with horns but one of that kind that surely had exist already a lot of times (and will still do). By the way: The novel, the Disney movie based on ("Notre-Dame de Paris, 1482" from 1831, written by the French author Victor Hugo), is even darker and has no happy end.

I'd say Frollo has got to be one of Disney's more realistic and scariest villains purely because there are people like him in real life. You're not going to find many evil queens that go around giving poisoned apples to women. You're not going to find a lot of brother-killing lions wandering around. But a "religious man" who is willing to twist his religious beliefs to be "whatever suits me for the moment" while also believing himself to be beyond reproach no matter his behavior? You'll, sadly, find a lot of those around. Maybe they aren't outright burning women at the stake anymore, but there are way too many that would return to that in a heartbeat if they could. Frollo is scary because he could be a real guy right next to you and you'd never know it until he decides to target you.

Something about the last 3 lines Geoff sings gives frollo so much more deph to me. The first "she will burn" is a continuation of the whole line, an ultimatum. But the second one sounds as if its a cry. As if frollo realises theres no other way but to "burn" everything, and loose the one thing hes been lusting over the whole time. The final one where geoff goes deep, is frollo coming to terms with it, knowing its the only way and he doesnt care no more, so long as shes gone. This whole composition and take on the song is a masterpiece from beginning to end

But I need to say this: everyone talks about Geoff and Eli in this, and I 100% agree and don't want to diminish that. But I am an absolute SUCKER for a tight harmony, and J. and Cesar on "the sun caught in her raven hair" DID IT for me. My favorite part of the song, hands down. Also, I feel like many times, we hear J. sing a little more lifted in his register, but it seems like he settled a bit deeper into his chest for that solo where the pressure breaks, and I love that sound on him! While Geoff did make his voice low, he absolutely can't bring himself to act the lines. I'm sorry, but there is nearly no emotion in them after the "what?!". Like, he just says "nevermind", he doesn't bring the emotion into it that is supposed to be there. This is the same reason I much prefer Christopher Lee's reading of The Raven. Geoff is a phenomenal singer, not a partiocularly good actor, not with his voice. Physically, yes, he kills it, but he can't act when a character is the opposite of him personality-wise - and Frollo is about as far from Geoff as you can get.

Hellfire is one of my all time favourite Disney villain songs for it’s story and musicality and holy shit you guys blew it out of the park. Geoff’s vocals matched Frollo’s impeccably in the creepy but alluring factor. The way they passed the melody and Latin around was incredible, Eli’s iconic vocals when Frollo starts to snap after Esmeralda escapes was bone chillingly awesome.

What a terrifyingly amazing arrangement! A perfect song to feature Geoff, belting to Heaven and dropping into the depths of Hell. Cesar will never stop surprising me how he can sing high like a sweet angel and then drop into a sinister baritone, connecting both extremes with one look directly at the camera. It's always a joy to listen to J.None and that rich voice. How I've missed it! Eli belting those tenor highs was pure awesomeness. And Layne... 😲 "BURN IT" made my eyes widen in a moment of soul-trembling chills followed by yelling "YES!" out loud as they all came in together. What a perfect way to start October, with the DARKEST Disney song of all time.

I agree with this song and your love of this song. What do you think of this background of this song even the Controversy: Controversy The song is considered to be one of the darkest in any Disney film, depicting Hell, sin, damnation, and lust, examples of subject matter that would generally be considered inappropriate for children. This song and visual sequence prompted the rating board to consider a PG rating for the film. In its defense, Disney claimed that its adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was intended to play as much to adult audiences as it would to children. The studio attempted to produce an animated film with an audience broader than only children: the main target audience of Disney animated features. In Film Genre 2000: New Critical Essays, film critic Marc Miller said that "Hellfire" "was too much for many adults," which prompted reviewers such as Mark Silver of The Los Angeles Times to say things like: "[Hunchback is] a beautiful powerful film that I would not recommend to children under eight or nine years old."[14] Animator Floyd Norman recalled the pitching session for the musical, in which Menken and Schwartz were "on hand to perform the songs that would grace the production." He recalls "Hellfire" "clearly ha[ving] the executives squirming nervously," wondering if this material could be in a Disney film.[15] The "Hellfire" subplot, "involving the villain’s need to desire to fornicate and/or murder the heroine because of his guilt-ridden lustings for her," which was described as "a cross between Schindler’s List and Sweeney Todd" by Scott Mendelson of HollywoodNews.com, was also referred to by him as one of the Disney events such as Mufasa being killed on-screen in The Lion King, that surprisingly were given "G-ratings from the MPAA back in the 1990s," which Mendelson uses as context when discussing Tangled's PG rating.[16]

This is magnificent. I love how you kept in the Mea Maxima Culpa. (for those who don't speak Latin, that means "Through my most grievous fault," and is said during the Mass as a form of repentance, highlighting Frollo's guilt in the eyes of God.) Also, the fact that the guard's appearance was kept a mystery hidden by a sihlouette fits with his depiction in the film (a depiction I suspect to be Frollo's guardian angel giving him one last chance to leave Esmeralda) Also, the fire in your eyes? Man, that really does sell just how much Frollo sold his soul by the end of the song!

@@robertofiend1264 He gives himself away at the very beginning of the song: "Of my virtue I am justly proud" tells us that he actually doesn't understand or live his own faith at all. It fails him here because, just as with everyone and everything else, it's of value to him only when he has a use for it. But that's not how faith works. He never stood a chance and he's got nobody to blame but himself (as the background vocals suggest--_mea maxima culpa,_ 'by my own most grievous fault.')

It is a Villain song so it should be dark and creepy, but epic too in its own evil way. I wish Voiceplay would do a cover of Heavens Light (Quasimodo’s song about Esmeralda) next to sorta contrast with Hellfire. Because the two songs are juxtaposed against each other in the movie…with Quasimodo seeing her as an Angel from Heaven, and Frollo seeing her as a Temptress from Hell.

I love the way VoicePlay's newer stuff shows off each individual voice. The contrast between them is one of the things that makes them so special, and it's great to see them use it to the fullest advantage. Layne's arrangements are 🔥🔥🔥and this is no exception, and his drums are just awe-inspiring display of controlled chaos. (Also: "Burn it!") Eli is simply epic. When his voice gets that metallic edge to it, it elevates the whole piece. Cesar's voice has an angelic quality, but his acting darkens it to a terrifying, petulant child, convinced of his own innocence. Geoff starts off as a proud mortal man and ends up spitting pure molten lava like some kind of preternaturally beautiful fallen angel. J. None is the perfect complement to the rest of the group: his voice is rich, earthy, and powerful, somehow more *human* than the others in a way that feels just right. SO. DAMN. GOOD.

And this the song that will finally make me join their patreon come November... Hellfire is the scariest Disney song. As a woman, it is the one my greatest fears to meet a guy like him. And they exist! Frollo as a villain is the most real world villain Disney ever created. And yet Geoff makes Frollo sinisterly alluring, which should NOT be possible. The arrangement, the lighting, the costuming, the camerawork... I honestly think this is your best song yet!

Yeah. And the most terrifying thing about it is that being completely crazy and rather charismatic at the same time is, unfortunately, possible. People like that do exist. Ha. But luckily, while we are off to daydream land, we don't have to really think about that... so long as we remember our lessons for when we get back to real life. ;D (Because let's face it, scary or not, this song is just pure magic.)

I agree so much. I know there was a lot of flack over Hans in Frozen for not being "properly foreshadowed," but I think he made a GREAT villain for the same reason Frollo does--as too many women know, guys like that are scarily real. They don't all look like Maleficent or Jafar. Sometimes they're charismatic leaders who can get away with sheer horror.
