Hey, very amazing tut. I have a question... I'm like a month into Blender and am trying to animate fireflies but I don't know what all Blender has for coding like in these nodes but you touched on something in there that checked for limits and maybe that could do what I want but I want to turn ON the firefly light for my firefly at a random time. But once it's on, I want it to stay on for 2 seconds, then fade off and stay off for a random time of at least say 4 seconds. I just don't know Geometry Nodes well enough to know where to put it (in geom node window or in shading window or... somewhere else) and how to use the nodes to get my limits and random start time. Well, if you have any idea, let me know and thanks!

@@mdreamslk I did see this concept. You hover over the parameter and click I to make a keyframe for it. I saw noise method with clamping or color ramp to create a more square wave off/on effect. I just think getting Blender to understand me is the hard part. I know how to write computer code, just not how to find all of it in Blender. Like... there is no random number node inside shader area. only in geo nodes area. I hoped to make ONE firefly with a random off length so that I can just instance that but your idea of making several and just coding them for diff times is good but I think this is a bit difficult for me to figure out. IF I can make one firefly turn off and on like I want, then I can make 5 or 6 with diff timings and put them all into my firefly collection so that they are all there in the group and turning off and on at diff times. Okay... that sounds like the basic approach I need. Thx!

@@mdreamslk still the problem for me is I need to be able to control how long the light is on. Fireflies only stay lit up for like 1 to 2 seconds. So, it's a puzzle. Maybe I'll come up with something. I don't know python script but I could write float RndNum = (rnd()); hehe oh well. I just want to make a fanstasy landscape, not write computer code!!!

@@mdreamslk I haven't' written any computer code in ages. I was just remembering decrement. timer--. That's how you do it in C, I think. C++ etc. Well, thanks again. Too bad Blender doesn't have any built in timer that you could start with a function call and get the current time (whatever it is) then you could interrogate the timer later and do your if () statement. okay, thanks a lot!!!

@@mdreamslk Oh, I just saw a vid where someone used value node and just put #frame in the value. then, it literally puts out the frame # the animation is on. ! so, if 24 fps, then every multiple of 24 is one second! That's part of the solution, I think. As long as animation runs, it's counting the frames. hmmmm... ok, I'll leave you alone now! haha thx

I could follow that tutorial. Do it step by step. Successfully do it… and still not know how nodes work. I need to take a hands on class.

was a bit too fast. even though i can appreciate the short lesson time, it was very difficult as a blender noob to follow along with where you were clicking. it seems like you've sped up the video to keep the content shorter, and if you're trying to build it as you watch the video it can be horrible in terms of requiring to slow the video down or hit rewind. it's also not very clear how you're connecting the timer to the rest of the nodes. for example, i can see a long edge from the scene time, but have no idea where it's connected. i'll have to take a look at the files, thanks for creating the content.

Thank you for the superb video! I'm trying to use this method to create a time advance effect - so essentially the scene opens at a set time, then the time speeds through (say from 09:00:00 to 14:30:35) before slowing down to a regular tick again. I figured I could multiply the scene time and force it to speed up this way, but I'm struggling to get this to work (it just skips numbers, whereas i need it to cycle through them all), any suggestions?
