I've just finished reading Turtles, one important insight I learned: The reason for Aza's lack of curiosity about Daisy, or anything else, is because there's almost no room for curiosity. The constant barrage of intrusive thoughts, their spiralling simply leaves very little room for the world outside of her head. It's one hell of a noisy prison, her brain is a prison because of the noise. And sadly, it can be mistaken by others as her being too into herself to care. Our society inundates us with noise, with information that's not useful for the most part, leaving us with almost no room for the kind of curiosity that enriches our lives. Some of us like Ava may need medication and cognitive behavioral therapy. Most of us need to change our habitual addictions to the internet, social media, to drama... We need to find ways to make room for life.
@kappanova13022 жыл бұрын

@brentmosser14942 жыл бұрын
I love "we need to find ways to make room for life." Andrew Solomon says, "The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality," and I think that can apply with the intrusive/invasive thoughts too. Honestly, before reading TATWD this past week, I didn't realize that other people also struggle with the "noisy prison" inside their head, that sucks the vitality and curiosity from life. I'm so thankful for John sharing this story with us; for people like Cree, who can give new meaning and artistry to the story; and for vlogbrothers' and Nerdfighteria's encouragement to live a life of vitality.

She seems perfect for the role. She seems honest, sweet, but not afraid to tell you the truth. I just finished Turtles All the Way Down for the first time and I loved it. I also have OCD and thought the book was pretty spot-on in capturing some of the exasperation that I feel sometimes. I loved a line from The Anthropocene Reviewed that I'll paraphrase as I don't remember it exactly. It is something like, "I can't kill the dragon because the dragon is me." I don't think the line was referencing OCD but I think it can be applicable. Even though mental illness sucks and pretty much anyone would rather live without it, it also is the reason why we are who we are. If we are happy with ourselves, and I wish that was the case for everyone but I know it can be hard, we can't be separated from the negatives that make us who we are. So, as hard as it is, I try to love my disease because I believe the meaning of life is to love God, love others, and love yourself, and as cheesy as it sounds, I think love can cure a lot of incurable things. It's not scientific but there's a lot in our world which doesn't quite operate in a scientific, measurable way.
