the discussion on style originality was very interesting to listen to. (and well-timed.) I'm currently in the process of starting up an educational youtube channel, and for very reasons we decided a paper-centric, minimally edited visual aesthetic was the best way to convey what we wanted to convey. we then made a lot of conscious decisions to avoid looking like Vihart, but that comparison has been worrying me through the entire development. I think it's the right approach for the topic (music theory) and it fits well with the people involved, but I've been really dreading putting it up and immediately getting a bunch of "looks like Vihart's stuff" feedback. hopefully it's different enough that I'm the only one who'll see the connection.

time stamp 57:46 1:11:30 edit: 1:21:37 I feel like of all of the channels that didn't even have one million subscribers at the time this was a scary accurate prediction. I'm not saying Grey is a robot but the evidence is mounting the more I listen to the podcast. Edit 2: also I noticed that there is this little thing Brady does where he starts a sentence but he doesn't think it all the way through and he kind of struggles to find that last word or phrase. And every time he does it I can feel it gnawing at him and I relate to it so much, sometimes I'll be listening and when he does it I'll subconsciously think of something he is trying to say or something that would work and every time he always says something better than what I thought except for when he lightly trails off and doesn't say anything. I actually tried recording a podcast once and It was challenging to think of words especially when you do it with the filter of knowing other people will be listening to It. I have a genuine respect for people who can just do it live. Also I don't know if this correlates to not being able to find a word or synonym in your head but I hunt and peck also.

I'm I the only one who enjoyed the Hobbit? It's objectively not as good as the LOTR trilogy granted but still very enjoyable films. One gripe though, the ending if the second one felt like a "tune in next week" tv cliffhanger, should have included smaugs attack. Probably should have left it at two to be honest. Ah well.
@Pat121V10 жыл бұрын
The barrel scene is fantastic as well. It's fantasy, I don't think it has to be gritty or realistic. The barrel scene was class and there was extra barrels in the river if I rememeber correctly. And legolas and the female elf are the only ridiculousy talented elves and they weren't trying to hit the dwarves.
@gabrielrangel95610 жыл бұрын
It's pretty to watch, nice CGI but there's nothing else to it. Even in The Hobbit Tolkien tries to be subtle and reasonably realistic, it would have been better if they had followed the original story (you know, without all the ludicrous shit, golden dragons and so on).
@Beer_Dad197510 жыл бұрын
I love them too, but they are deeply flawed due to being so thinly stretched, and I agree the fight scenes were so silly they threw me out of the movies pretty much every time apart from Thorin's final fight in 5 armies LOTR had moments like that too, but to a far lesser extent. Still the last movie was pretty decent for the most part and definitely benefited from the shorter run time. What worries me is that Peter Jackson seems to be more and more giving into excess as a director - I think perhaps he has too many yes men working for him now and doesn't get enough honest criticism - George Lucas stile.
@turtleant12010 жыл бұрын
I like the first two Hobbit movies quite a lot! Haven't seen Five Armies yet, but I'm sure I'll like it too. I got pretty misty-eyed when they opened the secret entrance in the second one.

I actually liked the hobbit movies, thought they were great even, not as good as the LotR films but nonetheless very good. They're movies targeted towards kids, that's why the animation is more vibrant than what is normal/realistic, that's why in the movies things are more goofy than usual, and that's also why you shouldn't expect LotR v2.0. What they do is build up everything in order to prepare you for the LotR movies, and I think they do that well. Especially in the extended version (yes I know :O longer WHAT?!?!), but you should see those because I think some very important and key moments that aren't in the theatrical versions happen. But that's imo.

RE: Grey's release schedule and other videos on the topic(and this is true for Brady videos). If you make good content, people will watch it. Sure there is a views over time component, sometimes you wont know why it just so happened views trickled in even if they eventually hit some realm of normalcy. But even if there is a video of the same topic released recently, at least for me there would be a reaction of, "Oh! Theres a CGP (or *phile) on it too!" And even if its the same subject matter, seeing two different views and presentation method is a good thing. What a lot of new youtubers dont really get is that you have to be interesting in a way that someone likes. The level of production, or how much the host bounces off the wall, or smash cuts, or how many examples of slower and slower footage are lined up, that all feeds into it. As much as some stuff is paint by numbers, you have to be using colors people enjoy. Some will enjoy red, some will enjoy blue, some will enjoy how they are used, or examples of their use. Some will hate that you use that brush which will either not bother them enough to stop watching, or gain you a loudmouth detractor. Virality is a result, not a destination. Point is: you both hit a golden zone of presentation, production, information, and entertainment. Yes, Greys videos could be longer, but if thats all he has to say.....thats all he has to say. Brady's videos......uhm.......I suppose could have some more to them sometimes, I guess, but other times it would just be useless fluff. The long skinny is yall are at the point where people watch because you make content they enjoy consuming. Dont sweat same time content releases, at the very least if gives us an instant chance to see your sides!

This is an old video and I might find a better place to make the comment, (Or find out that CGP already knows about this.) but there is a Tolkien edit of the Hobbit. I believe entirely fan made but you wouldnt know it, and it works amazingly well. It follows the original story much more closely and trims hours of fluff off the total running time. (It is basically as CGP asks for, two shorter movies though presented as one with an intermission.) I doubt Ill ever watch the original films ever again, but Ill most certainly watch the Tolkien edit a good few times.

Everyone who hates on the hobbit amuses me :P ya it's not identical to the book, but the book was in reworks before Tolkein's death. Even Tolkein didn't think The Hobbit was good enough after he wrote The Lord of the Rings. For example, in the original edition of The Hobbit, Gollum had no problem with gambling on the ring and the ring was just a magical ring, nothing sepcial. Tolkein retconned it to be important after he wrote The Lord of the Rings. I don't mind how they inflated the hobbit. I didn't mind the Barrel scene or anything. It was all just fantasy fun. That quote paraphrased by CGP Grey about "be your own" basically is why the Democrats lost horribly. If you check all the Democrats up for election, so many tried to run as GOP-lite and when you run the same kinda ads as the GOP with the same message, the people just go with GOP and your base is disinterested to vote for you. So dumb.

Grey I think you might be wrong about radagast the brown, if you look at the appendix of the return of the king it will tell of all the things of dol guldur and the white council in rivendel. One reason I like the movies is because it gets all those small things in the appendix and puts them in the movie, because we all know they can't each have their own short movies. that being said the movies aren't perfect, like the pale orc ozog the defiler did die at the battle of moria and they should not be in the movie. but when gandalf meets thorin in bree, that happened, gandalf going to dol guldur, that happened, although his viset to dolguldur happens before the hobbit in the time line. some moments like gandalf arguing with the trolls was ruined but overall I give this movie a thumbs up.
