Miltoniopsis repot: repotting my beast of a Miltoniopsis Kelly 'Spangled Banner'!

Hello Plant Lovers!

Күн бұрын

Plant Lovers I made this video a few months ago following on from my spring tasks video as repotting my huge Miltoniopsis Kelly 'Spangled Banner' was one of those spring tasks! So here it finally is...in all it's repotting glory. And YES! Some of the leaves are very concertinaed as I clearly have NOT been consistent enough with watering at crucial moments! Heigh ho. I've made a few videos about this cooler growing type of fragrant orchid and you can find the play list here: • MILTONIOPSIS ORCHIDS
This is the mycorrhizal fungi I use but anything available in your area will be just as good: biostim.com.au...

I like your ramblings❤😂🎉 they're entertaining and fun... Keep up the good work. I like watching your plants. I live in Michigan, USA❤😂🎉. I feed the birds in the winter time because a winter time is now for us.. and we've got big snow coming this week. God bless you and I enjoy your program❤😂🎉

The amount of times i've thought "I'm just gonna gently pull this spent leaf down... or maybe snip it off" with my poor little miltoniopsis! I had to chuckle at that! I've had my miltoni for a decade now, and it's still puny. I'm scared to try too much too fast, but am currently trying to optimize the medium. It's shown dramatic improvement since my last change, which was to spray it at least twice a day (during winter) and as much as 2 cups a day (just through the spray bottle) in summer. On a random side note, I frequently see otter poop, and it's full of crayfish shells. I'm wondering if a little touch of that might help in my medium mix for my next repotting.

Well funnily enough I do use crushed shells as a small top layer when I re-pot most orchids. I buy it from pet shops where it's sold as 'chicken grit'! Miltoniopsis can be tricky!

@@helloplantlovers Thanks! Just curious, are the crushed shells for nutrients or pest control?

What a nice video, thank you very much! I bought a Miltonopsis view days ago and now i'm hoping to give her a good life. Good to know Mykorrhizal can be used not only for Bonsais. Yesterday I read about Vanillia Orchids and how to mulitply- there must be Mykorrhizal in the soil of the mothers plant if we can't give it to the new plant pot.

Thanks for your great videos. When you mention shell grit are you referring to sea shells or egg shells?

It is a handy video, thank you. I have a question about these fungi if it is OK. Can I put fungi on the top of the mixture for plants that have already been reported this year?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 11 ай бұрын
Hi there - yes of course. Ultimately it can't hurt the plant so there is no risk.

Will the mycorrhizal fungi do any good along with those slow release pellets since they are not organic? Anyways, I wish I could keep my miltoniopsis alive here in southern California. It's too dang hot without a temperature control greenhouse. Thanks for sharing.
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching - the slow release fertiliser pellets release elements and minerals that plants need to grow, the mycorrhizal fungi make those elements and minerals available for the plant. It ultimately doesn't matter where those elements and minerals come from, the fungi can access them.

How often you water it mattew?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Жыл бұрын
Not often enough! Hence the concertina leaves. Essentially it shouldn't dry out so once a week ish in winter and then every 3 ish days when its warm - depends on the temps really.

Wow this plante is gorgeous never we see miltionopsis like this in France. In reality the climate is not for them very cold winters and very hot summers. I love these plants but I can't manage with them. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hi again Matthew, I enjoyed the video thanks although in the cooler climate of my part of the UK we have to be careful with our winter temperatures and moisture retention and I have to repot my Miltoniopsis every year, they seem to hate stale media. What puzzles me is you say it is Spring but I have a son in Sydney and it's halfway at least through summer at the moment. Is it different in Melbourne?
