In “Hellraiser,” a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.

One of the truly terrifying aspects of the cenobites is that they are summoned by their victims. In the books you see the depraved to the curious all playing with fire. Unlike other horror these victims sought out an experience that was to much for them. What’s scary is it’s such a human trait.

Still though: the box and its handlers deliberately obscure the true agenda to attract victims. It's an underlying lie of the Cenobites' piety that they're blind to: what's the point of giving gifts to people who don't appreciate them? It always made me think that Leviathan lies to the Cenobites to ensure their loyalty.

@@asant90 Essentially. There's a summoning incantation laid out all over it so moving the pieces puts the incantation together progressively. The blood from it cutting you is the mana for the summon. But most people opening the box are curious about the puzzle and not seeking infernal pleasures and don't know what the box is.

I hope they don't mess up the Cenobites like the sequels did. I love the fact that they are this horrifying thing that is still, somehow, True Neutral. Later on they became lame slasher monsters but originally they weren't there to slaughter and kill and maim; they were there to welcome the people who called them and the "sights they have to show" were ones they gladly inflicted on themselves. It really made them next level.

I will miss the leather with the knives that hung from pinhead's robes and his stained fingertips and the fact that just by looking at them, you could smell the stale blood on their bodies. But I'm glad they're doing something new and not just trying to replicate the original, and it's a novel so visual interpretation is up to the artist and doesn't have to follow the classic movie design

For anybody complaining about Pinhead's design... It actually very closely resembles Clive Barker's description of Pinhead in the original story The Hellbound Heart. He's described as being androgynous and having a girlish voice and its flesh being sown together in morbid and abstract ways. Clive Barker actually produced this movie, so it's definitely very promising so far. Btw, the cenobite at 1:23 actually looks freaky af. This should be a good movie if they don't pull any punches with the violence or honoring the more occult themes of the story.

Have you thought about one thing? No matter how much I love original Hellraiser and even consider Hellbound to be even better, it IS hard to deny that they both has been somewhat bitten by the teeth of time. However, they are unlike most other 80's horror movies impossible to regard as unintentional funny. They are as serious as Pinhead, when he appears, regardless whether pleasure or pain awaits! I'm really excited to watch this remake!

Saw Hellraiser twice on the cinema on its original release, starting a life long love of clive barker. Its been heartbreaking watching this franchise churn out below par sequels to make a fast buck. This, for the first time in decades looks very promising. Loving the colours and lighting. Hopefully they have such sights to show us!

Let's not confuse good cinematography with poor content. My fingers are all crossed for this. Already turned off by the CGI chains at 1:40 and the female pinhead. Yes, i may be a little sexist about it, but it's a little off-putting to see a female antagonist. Although the Cenobite who loved cigarettes was female (Hellraiser 3: Hell on earth).

This proves that these big critic names are bought out or are pushing a narrative. This was classic Clive Barker. There were elements of this film that felt like it was straight from an 80s film. Not over produced, not some empty pandering machine. This is what movies need to start being again. Made with the passion to the art that is created. Not the external influence of the social climate.

This is probably the best horror reboot I have seen in. I expected little and was completely blown away by it. I agree to a certain extent that a theatre release would have been fun, however, I don’t Hulu had the backing to get perfectionist high-budget costume designs and special effects. Seeing it on a smaller scale helped disguise the minor issues with details and prevented distractions.
