Love this series. My only gripe is you can tell this some early work in Hirano's career. His art definitely improves in the next 6 vols. and in his other series Drifters.

I almost appreciate a work more when I can actively see the artist improving. Attack on Titan and Soul Eater are other good examples of progression.

Watch the Hellsing Ultimate anime, it's faithful to the manga and the English dub is one of the few that's better than the original Japanese audio.

@@Sheachlo Not only is Cripsin Freeman incredible as Alucard, but they got actual British stage actors for some of the other characters for a story that mainly takes place in, well, England. I've never understood the argument that Japanese VA's have more "emotion" and "depth" when some dubs (like Hellsing Ultimate) are just as well performed and full of passion from the voice actors.

@@Sheachlo Bro I'm not about to spend 8 hours of my life listening to British characters get voiced by Japanese randos. Especially when there's a top quality English dub that actually makes an effort to cast accordingly. Same kinda reason people prefer Bebop and Baccano dubbed.

But for example von Stronheims' voice actor from Jojos Bizarre adventure does an amazing job showing of the character as a looony ultra patriot full of pride, while in the english dub he speaks merely with a schwarznagger like accent and theres no charm to it. So you must forgive me, but to me having germans dubbed with german accents isnt neccessarily a sign of quality and when theres original voice acting i prefer that one. Same for bebop. After watching it in original i dont really feel for the dub.

Whoever recommended hellsing as a successor to berserk was a bit off. Yes they both have excellent action and artwork, but that depth you spoke of... The soul is a bit lacking in hellsing. Two Manga that would be a good spiritual successors to berserk are "Vagabond" and "Vinland Saga" both of these stories have excellent artwork and badass fighting but also maintain an incredible substance at the same time

Vinland Saga is way less action packed than berserk, especially once Thor Finn is an adult. Hellsing is as gory, edgy and action packed as berserk. Plus the horror influence.

Dude, I am so glad you are reading this series. It is definitely not as deep as Berserk, but it matches in the violence department. That scene where he goes Restriction 0 = Monster mode, his body parts just fall apart and the animals/insects come out. The overall story evolves and hits the reader with twists/turns. Seras Victoria (Police Girl) has such a satisfying character evolution, which pairs well with Father Anderson's (the priest) character evolution. One of the character I slept on was Walter (the butler). He surprised me when the Nazi Twins + Zombies attacked the HQ. Great vid, Gem!

As usual you nailed the review. Love how you noted that the Deluxe Edition colors are reverse to Berserk - I never noted that. Also, with the guns it definitely is has a Western U.S. vibe, which is cool b/c Berserk has the European vibe going and the greatest manga of all, Lone Wolf & Cub, takes place entirely in Japan. I think Berserk is also better b/c there are those awesome statues you have and the story being longer is much deeper. But there's something to be said about both LW&C and Hellsing being able to tell an entire complete story and wrap things up. Love all 3 and love your reviews! We need a Hellsing statue unboxing next!

I have been fan of Hellsing for years and i have the anime series in my DVD library, i also read the manga aswell and it's freaking fire.i quite enjoyed and appreciated the video and review of the deluxe edition!. The deluxe edition looks awesome and i definitely don't mind picking it up.

Thanks so much for purchasing and reviewing, Gem! Since it’s only gonna encompass 3 deluxe editions it’s a much easier sell on the collection. I should be getting into it in the next month or so. I did not know there was an anime of this. I think I gotta wait until March of next year for the 3rd volume of this right? Also, I know you’ve heard people tell you this up and down but you should take the time to check out Castlevania on Netflix. Worth your time and that’s the OG Alucard, BAMF! Another anime that’s similar (also mentioned by some Geminites) is Blood the last vampire. Stay fresh brother! 💎

I got into hellsing when I was 7 after stumbling across the original tv series thinking it was like the van helsing movie (I was way too young to be into it back then) but yeah I ended up getting all the mangas and I was so hyped for ultimate after seeing the trailers for it when I was like 8/9 Side note: I’m crossing fingers the amazon studios movie is good because hellsing really has the potential to do good in live action

I'm not hearing that it's awful! seeing hellsing ultimate and trying to make time to read through my own deluxe, I myself realise it's never meant to be as deep as berserk, it's about the visceral stuff, it's throwing the worst against the worst and seeing what happens I do feel like correcting on the "wolf girl" though, that's a cat boy, and he's called Schrodinger. his thing is very much to be a pun on Schrodinger's cat, some of the other characters try to kill him, he's dead, but when anyone looks away he's gone and whoever he ends up around sees him alive, it's very confusing and he may end up doing something that doesn't really make sense, at least not next to the other characters that follow the "world rules" of the series I'd only say watch either series (the Ultimate series if you want to follow the whole manga) if you really want to see it animated like many fans of manga tend to want. unfortunately I can't say the same for Berserk, it's never really had a perfect or in any way near complete adaption, the '97 adaption covers golden age and nothing else but it's dated and the 2016/17 effort is ugly as sin, for Berserk, fans have only had new chapters for the past few years

You can watch the older TV series of Hellsing since it deviates from the anime radically since there was very little anime to adapt at the time, though most people hate it, and I can't remember anything about it and it probably wasn't very good. I'm going to pass on this deluxe edition in any case. I feel like the Hellsing Ultimate OVA is good enough for me. I used to own the first 8 volumes of the old Dark Horse editions. To me, it just works better in that format. I'll still watch your reviews of the other two volumes, though. :)

Watch the hellsing ultimate anime BUT read the Berserk anime, Japan really hates adapting Berserk for some reason because they skip arcs and give it shit animation. Btw watch the dub for hellsing ultimate, it's considered to have one of the best dubs ever. Keep in mind the first episode of hellsing is kinda wack, but the dialogue and story pick up drastically on ep 3, hope you enjoy.

Haven't bothered with watching the new berserk series since everyone says it is garbage so I may just get the series after I complete Hellsing deluxe. I also have Goblin Slayer, Laid Back Camp, I want to get the Cells at work and in code black as well. I have part of Girls last tour and I am waiting for volume 4 of Soul Eater The Perfect Edition. I was going through anime to get later and I want I Am A Hero. The only zombie anime I really liked was High School of The Dead. There's not much anime with the tradition western type zombies.

Both the UPC and parental advisory sticker came off very, very easily. Nice and clean with no residue. Literally just got done removing the stickers off this and 3 volumes of Berserk Deluxe I just got in the mail. So, can confirm, the stickers come off super easy. You can tell they made sure to use a specific adhesive that wouldn't damage the cover. These stickers used to be a nightmare in the past for collectors and fans alike, so glad Dark Horse is paying attention.

Hellsing is one of my all-time favorites. I have the original 10 volume paperback run, but I'm thinking of selling it and upgrading to the deluxe edition. As for the anime, there are two versions; "Hellsing" follows the manga for the first half, then makes up the second half. It introduces some interesting ideas, but totally shits the bed with the ending. "Hellsing Ultimate" is a direct adaptation of the manga. I'd say they're both worth watching, but Hellsing Ultimate is better, since it actually *has* a conclusion.

The first deluxe for berserk ( collecting the first arc) is a weird and admitting weak start. But everything from deluxe volume 2 onwards is the greatest piece of literature ever put to paper. Dc and Marvel may be your foundation, but Berserk is going to morph it into an empire

I really like Hellsing, it's a really nice concept with cool characters and awesome accion But it lacks the depth and drama from Berserk. Also the art and characters from Berserk are way better I really like the characters from Hellsing but i loooove the Berserk ones!!!
