HELP! My GM Truck Can't Pass EMISSIONS! (+ BONUS Vintage LAND CRUISER No-Start)

This 2012 GMC Sierra V8 runs great, but can't pass the NY State Emissions inspection due to a pesky Check Engine Light.
It's setting several codes:
P0011 - Cam System Performance
P0102 - MAF No Signal
P0443 - EVAP Purge Solenoid Ckt.
Purge solenoid has been replaced, as well as the MAF sensor SEVERAL times!
Let's see where the data and a logical thought process leads on this one.

If I had ten dollars for every time that I had been called out to a shop to do a diag, and after taking loads and loads of equipment with me like scopes and scan tools , just to arrive, get my torch and test light out, to then find myself changing a single fuse and going home again…… then id be writing this from the Bahamas and not my livingroom lol I’m so tired of telling people to check fuses before they call me, that now I don’t even bother, I just charge them accordingly once I’ve changed it for them.

Hmmmm apparently someone forgot to KISS and check the basics on that GM blown fuse. Guessing the old purge selanoid got stuck and shorted and blew the fuse. Nobody bothered to look at a wiring diagram until you did.

That is amazing how long it went without somebody finding a blown fuse. That is the state of the industry. Haven’t seen an 88 Land Cruiser is a while.

If you test a suspected short-circuit with a test light the worst thing that can happen is the light bulb will light up. I know years ago when him, Eric O., and Paul Danner went to Eric-the-car-Guy's meetup they probably had at least 100 test lights between them. They even diagnosed a power window issue on a Chevrolet truck; turned out to be bad relays.

Interesting case on that GMC. The owner threw 3 mass airflow sensors at it, and none of them worked. But never thought to check to see if it had power and ground with a simple test light.... His money was far better spent calling Ivan. Nice work bro.

Basic checks first should be in every diagnostic handbook. The most basic is to check fuses after pulling up a wiring diagram. Eliminate electrical problems before breaking out the sockets and wrenches.

I used a drill and a bore scope to get me to the exact location and a nibbler to put in the new access door on my 02 Saturn L200 , I’m always thinking about the next owner! That one mod saved me hours on the fuel pump and about 3 months later on the sending unit replacement.

Parts cannon on a blown fuse! Solid diagnostic, Ivan! Still wondering what caused the fuse to blow - if it happens again, it requires a careful wiring inspection. One Rover BMW M47 engines have Bosch film type MAF I now do quick checks on the MAF using a multimeter, power and ground the look for known output voltage at idle and at 4000 rpm

great job alot of the time multiply problems can lead to a common ground who would have though it was a common power my boss was not best trouble shooter but when call a report at ac company i worked for industrial chillers we had better checked all the fuses

That old Toyota no doubt has some life left, but it is definitely looking a little crusty . Saw an interesting episode from CCN today too . About a 94 Lexus/ Camry that was intermittently dying and many other shops couldn’t figure it out! I had a pretty good idea what the problem was! 🆒👍👍🇺🇸

Man ivan I'm literally dealing with the exact same codes on a 2014 6.0 .. I thought it was a ref low or a 5vref 2 issue as it was to many codes all at once . ( we also had abs codes ) I've chased it down to the cmp, and ckp sensors. I believe the cmp sensor is shorting sending out static on the 5vref2 ...

This unfortunately reminds me of Alaska Air flight 182, the one with the seized Jack screw where everybody on board was lost. In reading the final NTSB report, I found that the pilots made a bad situation worse by trying to move the Jack screw when it was clearly jammed. They kept trying to move it while observing the voltage spikes that occurred with the jammed part. They clearly had no mechanical sympathy and everybody paid for it with their lives.

Why is it that so many educated people never think of the easiest thing to check before spending money on parts that don't fix their problem ? Fuses is my first go to if something isn't working, I only go after power problems if the fuses blows ! I guess common sense has left the building on so many people !

The MAF sensor was powered via test lamp so likely it went from a default open loop fuel strategy (MAF sensor inactive) to a different open loop fuel strategy (MAF sensor active). Sudden large changes in fuel strategy often result in a stall.

The 1960 cars the check engine light never came in the only light came on was Ford Blue light said the engine was cold it turn off when warm up they put that junk on the cars so more parts go bad my friend Owen a Smog shop he said the old cars pass the emissions test better then the New cars
