Fairly straight forward R&R of the water pump, and easy diag. Nice to have those every once in a while. I'm sure that pump was making quite a racket before the leak started. The owner may be surprised at how quiet it is now. 😁

In my LS1 in Australia, (similar engine), when my water pump failed, it failed instantly, and just lost the coolant. no prior warning. Bigger job in that motor, as need to replace the entire water pump/thermostat housing. Need to remove the throttle body too. Ray goes well.

Not wrong there! As a VW owner I change water pump when I do the timing belt to hopefully mitigate having to do it between belts. Mainly coz to get the bloody pump out, the belt has to come off. Thanks VW.

@@randyedelen5770I never really got that design decision. Back when non-interference engines existed, it had a logic to it. Neglect your water pump? We're going to stop your engine so you don't fry it! Now it's: neglect your water pump? Now you're going to need a new engine! The former happened to me on a '98 Camry. It was February, I figured the horrible noise might be the alternator. I knew it wasn't a big deal if I was wrong. :)

Here is a trick to try when changing the crush washer on the oil plug. Take the cap off the oil and put a shop vac in the hole where the cap goes. That will allow you to go underneath the vehicle and unscrew the bolt and you won't spill a drop. Helps if you need to change the crush washer and don't want to change the oil

Not only do I remember rotary phones, but I also remember when the first two numbers of a 7-digit phone number were usually written with their alphabetic equivalents from the rotary dial. Example: a phone number back in the 1960s may have been IV3-7750, with the IV prefix standing for "Ivanhoe" (I am not making this up). I recently downloaded an old school rotary ringtone for my cell phone -- nostalgia is a powerful drug. 😆

In lowly Bismarck ND, (which is the capital btw) it was always Capital3-5000. (223-5000). We used to play games, like sticking our finger in the 9 spot and see if we can dial only a 7. I remember my aunt, a phone company employee with Bell Telephone (that's all there was before deregulation) getting the first push-button phone I ever saw. We all stood around it and marveled when it arrived. Such high tech. At that time only certain areas had push button systems. I remember my parents saying that we were still stuck with rotary. Speaking of deregulation. In college I hooked up a "bootleg" phone to the current phone line so we could have a phone in the basement as well as the main level. Totally illegal. I had bought the phone from another college student. The phone had questionable origins but it worked fine. Wish I still had that phone. It was a 50's rotary dial.

My bro right by you in Hixson, I drove there twice from Long Island,NY, that 14 hour drive quite the killer, especially in a Jeep JKU Wrangler, but love it down there, by the waterfront. A doctor friend of his has a huge yacht docked there, went to visit him last August, and he was having a party on his boat, so much fun. I am going back again this summer, maybe do the NY -> Charlotte -> Chattanooga flight this time ;), he’s a 10 min drive from the airport. His house overlooks the mountains, beautiful view, we lop a few rounds from his various arms every now and then, something that would land me 3 years prison time in NY, if I decided to shoot in my backyard.

Believe it or not. You can still get a "party" line. I know of a few businesses that use that because the owners are too cheap to buy 2 lines. If the customer dials the number for business A the phone rings with 2 shorts. If the customer wants business B they dial the second number and it rings to the same building as 2 longs. It's screwy, but cheapskates don't want to buy a system when something like this just adds a small amount to their landline bills for a single line. Depending on the ring, they answer the phone as business A or B.

Just replaced my waterpump on my 03 Tahoe 5.3. It was the whole unit design which took an 1 1/2 hours. Mine was the original at 195 K miles . This was 85k miles ? What junk! I'll keep the old . I'm wondering what those start/stop starters will cost!

Trick I use to install pump is screw in 2 exhaust studs and slide pump in vs aligning it and fighting with bolts.

That's because Toyota water pumps don't go bad with only 85,000 miles and only 5 years old. My Toyota MR2 Spyder is 24 years old with 225,000 miles and still has the original water pump. It's never had a leak of any kind.

I had to change the water pump twice on a 2005 Yukon Denali, was different than in this video, but wasn't too bad. That type had the thermostat mounted into the water pump assembly. Now we have a 2014, have no idea (yet) what that has....

I was born 9/16/61. In E ND, we had 3-digit dialing (rotary-dial!!) until about '72?? Then it went to 7-digit dialing. Took quite a while if someone had "9's" in their new #! I have OCD pretty bad. When I do a water pump I also do all hoses, thermostat, idlers, tensioners and belts. I also flush and purge the cooling system so as not to contaminate the system with undistilled water.

I needed a fix on my Terrain one time, and I couldn't get into the dealership(which turned out to be a good thing). I was forced to take it to another good mechanic....they told me that GM charges you for the hours, despite not doing that much work. This was last June; I sold it the next month. They used to be great, but not anymore.

GM are amongst the worst for this sort of thing, more and more manufacturers deliberately engineer parts that have weak points or are overley complex in the name of cost cutting. A prime example is the GM 1.8L Ecotec engine - the cooling system design has many fail points, they thought a plastic combined thermostat/ temp sensor housing mated directly to the cylinder head was a real smart idea😂

Personally, I would have washed the serpentine belt off with soapy water and put it back on. It wasn’t hurt at all. Those belts are really durable. I’m at 427K + on my Duramax and still running the original belt.

In the late 70's some people had rotary phones with like 50ft of line on them so they could walk all over the house and inevitably it would become a giant tangled horrendous mess. I still miss the days before cellphones though

In the 90s I had a 1987 Taurus with the 3.0 and I knew something was up when one day I was suddenly having trouble turning right and hearing minor belt squeak. Turns out the water pump was leaking right on the crank pulley which make the belt almost stop since the crank pulley was slippery from the anti-freeze.

Customer brought us an after market Azone or O'Reilly pump. Installed pump & filled coolant. Pump gasket surface not level & leaked immediately. They didn't actually save any money! Cost extra to do if twice & no warranty on 2nd pump install?! Yeah, no bueno!

I've changed an LS-1 and LS-3 water pump, but nothing on the newer DI engines. I didn't realize the pump came out of the housing like that. I actually own a 17 Tahoe with a 5.3, but haven't had to tackle this one yet. I'm a little surprised GM didn't just make that all one unit that you have to replace to save costs on manufacturing, but that looks like a piece of cake.

Water pumps were very faulty on 73 CJ5 Jeeps, I recall replacing the water pump at the side of the road, at the curb, once out in the boonies. good thing the pump was relatively easy to remove and install, because it had to happen frequently.
