Thank you for this video. I enjoyed how detailed it is. I’m going to try this. We just got a golden retriever puppy and I’m having the same problems with her jumping on my toddlers.

I hope it helps! Remember it’ll definitely take continued supervision and reinforcement as your puppy grows. They tend to start slowing down a bit at 18 months or so. *tend* *a bit* 😅 plenty of exercise and mental stimulation helps a lot too!

Very roughly speaking, how many days of repeating this training do you think is about average for the dog to stop jumping up?

This is so helpful, thank you! Question - what do you do if your toddler is only 1.5 years old and you can't really teach her the body language signs?

I would suggest repeating the training enough so your dog understands the behavior, try a mix of adults, teenagers, younger kids, toddlers. You can even go to a dog training facility with other people to further enhance the behavior with strangers etc. Eventually they will understand the behavior and practice it on command. You can use body language and or a voice command to double down on the behavior.

MECs suggestion is a great one. In your case if your dog learns the behavior with enough people and various ages it’s much more likely your pup will be able to apply the same behavior to your baby. You will have to be the one practicing by your toddler. I would also recommend working really hard on a great response to his/her name (your dog I mean). I have some videos called Name Game - you should be very confident that if you call your dog’s name he/she will immediately stop what their doing and go to you or at least look at you for further instruction.

Doesn't seem very applicable since it appears the dog is not turning away from her hand because the dog gets it, the dog is turning away from her hand because the dog is looking on the ground for more treats. Correct me, and explain, if I'm wrong.

Thanks for your comment. This is where the use of the marker word is so critical. Over the time the dog understands that the source of the treat is actually at the moment he sits. An added bonus is that the dog is more likely to turn away (for example if an adult calls him away from the child) because that behavior will become muscle memory. It’s like if the dog is thinking “First I sit, then I turn away. ”

I was watching up until I heard you used kibble or cheese as the treat …. Please learn about basic canine nutrition and what is species appropriate. Kibble is one reason to make dogs hyperactive and unable to focus. Cheese is not appropriate as dogs are lactose intolerant. High reward treats are dehydrated meat or offal

Yeah puppies especially are lactose intolerant. However, seeing as we don’t know what type of kibble or what she defines as “kibble” we really don’t know. Personally I think the best thing to train with is their dinner/breakfast. If so, then “kibble” would probably be really good for training as far as nutrition.

Not all dogs are lactose intolerant, just many. And there are many chesses that are low lactose, thankfully for my cheese loving lactose intolerant son haha anyway, the training is good, just use a different treat you feel more confident with. Doesn't change the fact that the training is good and working.
