You gotta love the ‘sloppy sit’ position that so many labs do with one leg lolled out to the side like it’s giving off ‘I’m just chilling here’ vibes. They can be flawlessly trained but you’re never going to convince them to ’sit pretty’ lol I’ve been around labs for a large part of my life due to my family being a puppy training family for prospective guide dogs for the blind (puppies lived with us for their first year and learned all the basic training and to not be afraid of any experience they might have to go into as guide dogs) and almost all of them did the ‘sloppy sit’ just like Kiki is doing here. Also, thanks for this great video. It’s exactly what I need for my scatty cockerpoo who gets very over excited and hurls herself at every person she sees both in the house and out

If you practice (in the home, not out and about) just dropping the leash and walking away within 1 second of the behavior, it then loses the reward. Once the dog can do this no problem, add some distraction within the home (someone in the kitchen / more people around etc).

My 1 year old puppy jumps when she is reacting (barking her head off) to other dogs. I think she is saying “do you see this.. let’s get out of here!” Ideas? Does this work?

Do you have a video to address dogs that whine constantly when stressed or over excited? For example, he holds a down stay while I’m fixing his food, but he whines, howls, and carries on the whole time. He’s a chihuahua.
@WollongongSkyWatch
@WollongongSkyWatch Жыл бұрын
Stop prepping the food, turn away and pick up a book. Only put the book down when the whining stops. Repeat each meal time until you can put the food down without any carry on - the reward is the food. Changing the meal time earlier by a few minutes will also help.

Everytime a dog jumps on me I fold both arms imfront of me become a statue and stare straight ahead. Everytime the dog immediately sits. Dog owners are always fascinated when their dog responds to that technique. once the dog sits then i will reward with a calm pet. Starts jumping repeat

I'm finding it very hard to train my 8 month old puppy using any technique with a leash because as soon as it comes out, he FLIPS OUT and jumps and screams and cries until he gets put on the leash and taken outside, and then he pulls HARD until he is exhausted. We are planning to get private 1 on 1 training for leash walking but I feel like I can't train anything else because of the excitement around the leash. We have tried just having it out at regular times but he will literally freak out for hours if the leash is out

Hello Bailey. That sounds exhausting! I am not a trainer, but have a new 6 month-old rescue Golden Retriever and understand the challenges. I don't know if you are using currently, but with our girl we needed to go from collar to a harness that has a clip on the chest as well as the back, and using the leash on the front to keep from that pulling, as they simply cannot do it while wearing. Also, I watched a whole bunch of McCann's videos on crate training and general pulling manners which has been invaluable. Is it possible to have your pup in the crate when you take out the leash and teach him to be calm in the crate in order to get the "treat" of going on the leash? We put an open 'pen" in the kitchen where she stays when we cannot watch her with both eyes and it has been a great place to teach her manners.

@@laurakatemarshall7330 Don't go out unless she is calmer. Take the leash... she is excited.. put the leash back where it was . don't say anything, don't look at the dog. maybe walk away.. start again... you might have to do this a lot of times...! keep going until calm.. put the collar/ harness on...same thing...same with going out... pulling... go back inside ...pulling... go back inside... as long as it takes.. then .. outside ... pulling.. go back a few steps... wait ... walk... go back a few steps... all very calmly... as a stubborn calm person.. you are in charge. Check Nigel Reed 's video They work! Good luck!

YES. This! And to clarify one thing - you put the leash away only as long as she's overexcited. So ifshe calms down in 1 minute, you start again then, you don't have to wait half an hour. Personally I don't like harnesses because they encourage a dog to pull. But this method is excellent.

Better than a neck injury. Harnesses are the safest option for them. Especially if they are untrained (pull on the leash).

You guys always say breed of dog is not necessarily dependent of behavior. However she starts this video off saying jumping is typical of labs.

What she's saying is that you cannot depend completely on BREED ALONE to predict all of a dog's behavior, yet at the same time, you'll often see a typical behavior within a specific breed. I think of it this way: If you were to bet money on which litter would be more likely to have adult dogs that have very high drive and energy- Malinois or Basset Hounds- which one would you probably bet on? (GENERAL) However, among the litter of Malinois there will be a various range of drive/energy and same for the litter of Basset Hounds.(SPECIFIC) Breed can give us some very general guidelines and then the rest of a dog's temperament comes from things such as individual personality, health, intelligence, experience, experiences in the litter etc. I like to say "take breed into account but don't count ON it". And so many people do just the opposite such as: "I have a sedentary lifestyle but I heard that breed doesn't matter so I'm getting this cute Border Collie" (giving ZERO credit to the breed factor) "Well my last dog was a Boston Terrier so I'm getting another because I want a dog that's going to act exactly like her" (giving TOO MUCH credit to the breed). The most sensible way to approach it is- take the dog's breed into consideration (as it's part of their DNA) but then learn about what your specific, individual dog is like. That way, though it may or may not happen, you can be prepared for those behaviors that it was originally bred for: if you get a terrier, be prepared for digging, barking if you get a sheltie, leash-pulling if you get a husky, etc.

What is typical is one thing. Predicting the individual dog’s behavior is another. This distinction is what they mean
