Are these exercises functionally different from just flexing the obliques in isolation? I can move my rib into the right place by flexing, but to breathe I have to relax enough that it slips back under.

It's going to be slightly different for everyone! The thing we want people to work toward is finding out how to breath well with the support they need to feel safe in the ribcage!

Do rib braces help with slipping ribs? I think I have this because I feel clicking and movement in my rib when standing up
@docjenfit5 ай бұрын
Compression or rib braces might help with this but it is a passive treatment so not something that would be a long term solution.

Any comments on how many reps/sets for the chop? Thanks!
@docjenfit Жыл бұрын
It can be good to try starting with a set of 10-15 and see how it feels. Then working toward 2-3 sets and after that trying to increase the resistance would be a good step!

Is this the same as costochondritis? I feel like I have the opposite. I need MORE movement there?
@docjenfit Жыл бұрын
It's not exactly the same but slipping ribs can result in costochondritis symptoms. You don't necessarily need MORE movement but we need to find the path back to being able to move through or thoracic upper back region and ribs with less discomfort. So it's about how to reintroduce supported movement through our ribs again.

I’ve been dealing with this for four years and now my upper back is so stiff (even though I’m hypermobile). It’s really getting me down so thank you for the tips. Can I ask where you got the ball you used in the first exercise you demonstrated?

Ah never mind, I’ve just seen the link in the description. Thanks again anyway!

What if your last false rib is stuck to the next one? Is that another type of diagnosis?
@docjenfit2 ай бұрын
I guess it is hard for me to say without being able to assess you personally. It is always good to work on having both mobility and stability around the ribcage!

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Unfortunately there's no way to diagnose through youtube, but I always recommend seeing your primary doctor if concerned!

You need to strengthen your chest and a rib area. I use a small and large chirp wheel, a foam roller, and am going to try bands along with the cat-cow pose to stretch... then try to watch the way I sit or even look at my phone. I originally knocked a rip out at the age of 22. Jumping on steps with children. I had no idea what I had done. But I just turned 65 and have been having supluxating ribs for about 18 years. My twin and I have EDS, so we really have to watch what type of exercise. I think I can do most of these, but I lost the use of my left hand, so I may have to figure out how to finagle them. 😊

Believe it or not - what worked for m - and I was in BAD shape, is the following, but I might be a strange case: It seems that (in my preferable order) wide pushups, diamond pushups, and dips (legs on chair and hands behind the back on a counter or table - be careful. Then a hard calisthenics workout every day and I’m good. More than good. But if I miss a day - even to take a day off working out, I find myself in pain before my next workout. So it’s like a bandaid for me - with a side effects of abs and a lot of muscle (sit-ups with obliques are in my routine as well, including a bunch of other Rocky-movie type stuff. Works for me but I don’t know if it would work as well for others. And the last exercise in this video is a winner as well, I’m starting to see and feel. Good luck and I hope you get the pain under control!

The thing with me is that when I twist I don’t know if my rib pops out, or if that’s just a nerve that shocks that part but I feel my rib move until I move it to where my body feels safe. It doesn’t hurt as much as one would think (at least for me). I have been resting it, and it has definitely helped with these type of exercises. I think in my situation the cartilage holding my ribs tore a bit, and the rib moves out of place. My question is, does cartilage heal itself after time? Will I need surgery? This sucks and I wish the best for anyone dealing with this
@docjenfit3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing and it can definitely be really frustrating. If you have noticed a difference with exercises like this, I would definitely encourage you to continue to do them regularly and continue to progress to more difficult variations as you are able. The one thing we can say is your body goes into a place that it feels unsafe. So, how do we bring more support, engagement, and safety to that area. It's hard for me to comment on the cartilage. Ultimately, cartilage doesn't have good healing ability. My real recommendation would be focusing on exercises that bring dynamic support back to your core and ribcage. We have an amazing Core Plan on Jen Health that you could try a free week of by going to jen.health/freetrial You can even use code OPTIMAL to get your first whole month for only $20!
