I think that younger generations have definitely lost the taste for dissonance or irony in art. "This ain't no party, this ain't no disco..." to that groove is obviously the artist intentionally creating a dissonance but it just goes over younger listeners' heads.

David Byrne developed the entire staging concept for this show. The film this is from -- Stop Making Sense -- is considered one of the best concert films of all time. It was directed by one of America's best directors, Jonathan Demme. You owe it to yourself to see the entire thing in one sitting (preferably on a large screen with a good sound system so you can dance along).

[Verse 1] Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons Packed up and ready to go Heard of some gravesites out by the highway A place where nobody knows The sound of gunfire off in the distance I'm getting used to it now Lived in a brownstone, lived in the ghetto I've lived all over this town [Chorus 1] This ain't no party, this ain't no disco This ain't no fooling around No time for dancing, or lovey-dovey I ain't got time for that now [Verse 2] Transmit the message, to the receiver Hope for an answer some day I got three passports, a couple of visas You don't even know my real name High on a hillside, the trucks are loading Everything's ready to roll I sleep in the daytime and I work in the nighttime I might not ever get home [Chorus 2] This ain't no party, this ain't no disco This ain't no fooling around This ain't no Mudd Club, or C.B.G.B I ain't got time for that now [Verse 3] Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit? Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.? You oughta know not to stand by the window Somebody'll see you up there I got some groceries, some peanut butter To last a couple of days But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones Ain't got no records to play [Bridge] Why stay in college? Why go to night school? Gonna be different this time Can't write a letter, can't send no postcard I ain't got time for that now [Outro] Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock We blended in with the crowd We got computers, we're tapping phone lines I know that that ain't allowed We dress like students, we dress like housewives Or in a suit and a tie I changed my hairstyle so many times now I don't know what I look like You make me shiver, I feel so tender We make a pretty good team Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving You ought to get you some sleep Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks? They won't help me survive My chest is aching, burns like a furnace The burning keeps me alive Get your instructions Follow directions--

You have to be in excellent cardio vascular shape to be in David's band(s) lol. He's the kind of guy, as an ex-art student, that treated his band and every song as an art project. The track is seemingly about some sort of nondescript dystopian time of civil unrest. He never really clarified it that I've seen, but certainly no time for fun or distraction other than aerobics, apparently. Brilliant band! 🔥

Talking Heads are(were) an eccentric band with a VERY eccentric lead singer. The quirky movements and odd behaviour is part of the package that made them stand out and unique in a time when we were bombarded by great bands in concert and radio. They certainly carved their own unique niche into the musical tapestry of the 80's and, so happens, one of my favorite bands from that era in the genre.

We have not had any major warfare in our country since 1865. We don’t know what that’s really like. David Byrne was trying to imagine living in NYC during a war. Taking a side, being committed. To offset the heavy lyric content, the band wrote this iconic party/dance music. And the stagecraft and showmanship raise it all to true art. Fun, absurdist, and deeply troubling all at once. Think of Ukraine…a lot of people a lot like us are living through this.

I turned and looked at him and asked "How do you know this song." He replied "My dad plays Talking Heads a lot. I love classic rock." Yeah it was like getting stabbed in the heart when he referred to it as Classic Rock. But I do love when the younger generation enjoys the music I grew up with. And it doesn't sting anymore, when those bands are called classic.

One of the greatest bands ever but they just are so odd when you first encounter them. David Byrne has such a sense of humor. The fans already knew this song because it was a big radio hit not just on alternative radio but it crossed over to rock and other stuff and it had come out on an earlier album a couple years before, and that whole album is incredible, but life during wartime as a song, starts off that entire album, and the name of the album is, fear of music. So everybody already knew it and a lot of their songs although there was a good deal of newer stuff for this huge concert extravaganza/ movie. So it was just fantastic to watch this huge stage performance of a song that we already knew and loved.

About the meaning of the song, my take is that it is a spoof of all the clichés found in war/spy/action movies. The band running all through the performance underlines how these movies focus more on keeping the action going rather than trying to develop the plot and the characters. Each single verse could be a quote from a screenplay, and the fact that they don't seem to fit together to build a sensible story is again a comment on how the plot of action movies is often only a pretext to introduce a sequence of fights, high speed chases, explosions and such. BTW, love your channel.

Great band, and David Byrne continues to be energetic and quirky at 70. I saw one of the first dates of his 2018 tour (which I believe is still ongoing) in Buffalo and then again a few months later in Toronto, and it was incredible. A dozen musicians and dancers at least to support him, and they were all wireless and doing incredibly choreographed movements. About half the setlist was Talking Heads songs and the other half was more recent solo material. It was an excellent show and everybody in the theatre was on their feet by the second song.

I watched that dude with out the heads, with his own band live on PBS a while ago...and I had no idea how much performance I was I going to witness. At one point he was wearing a unitard musculature outfit. 😂 so weird ❤ oh right, he is the talking part of the heads.

and the lyrics are about life during a certain kind of wartime. He is underground. changing his appearance. Communicating clandestinely. Saving up peanut butter to live a couple of days.

Imagine today’s artist reacting to artists from the 70’s/80’s/90’s live performances and then finding out that concerts were 25-50 bucks.

This is one of my favorite scenes from "Stop Making Sense"... just try to do all of that aerobic movement and still sing in key without gasping.

This is actually a very serious song about war. In my opinion it’s the best. If you listen to the studio version without the visuals you can picture the lyrics.

Saw Talking Heads live about a month before this concert movie was recorded, so I did see virtually the same show, and David Byrne, the lead singer, was all over the place. If you watch the whole "Stop Making Sense" movie it starts with just Byrne, an acoustic guitar and a boom box with a backing tape doing "Psycho Killer", and then the band members are added one or two per song until everyone is on stage. It was very cool live. Bassist Tina Weymouth is truly amazing, and is one of the most influential of all Punk/New Wave musicians. EVER. BTW, David Byrne has publicly stated that he is Autistic, so that may help account for some of his on stage activity.

Saw it a month after they recorded it in Sydney Australia. 40,000 at a 3 day Festival. Also saw, The Pretenders and INXS on the same night. David Byrne came on stage around midnight, running over an hour late, thought he was playing acoustic guitar to placate the crowd as they were setting up. Little was I about to know that I was about to witness a concert and stage show by a band who at the time was my favourite, that has spoilt me for live music ever since. Nearly 40 years has passed and have never witnessed anything better.

@@geoffmaloney2717 Saw The Pretenders twice, once when Iggy Pop opened for them, and once when they opened for Neil Young. Both great shows. And I saw INXS, RIP to Michael Hutchence, a real shame, when they were in a show with Pil (Public Image Limited) and Mr. Johnny (Rotten) Lydon opening for them. But the Talking Heads show was better, IMO, than The Pretenders show, but Neil Young is THE MAN, so not Neil.

Back in the 80's when one of my crowd would gripe about something, being difficult you knew that someone would come back with "This ain't no party! This ain't no disco! This ain't no foolin' around!" 😁

It's a fabulous live performance, but the irony of the dark lyrics over the party type funkiness is also what makes this tune so funny and special. It's Talking Heads at the quirky best.

From their Stop Making Sense stage show. Saw it a 3 day rock festival in Sydney Australia Jan 1984. Was mesmerized by the whole thing. They released a film of the Stage Show later that year, filmed by Jonathon Demme in Dec 1983 in LA. Band consisted of guys like Bernie Worrell, the keyboardist from James Brown, the black guitarist is a cousin of the Brothers Johnson , the back up singers were phenomenal. Everything was choreographed to minute detail and David Byrne was into theatrics therefore the weird dancing. Do yourself a favour and stream Stop Making Sense. It will ALL make sense then :)
