After so much searching, this is the VERY BEST tutorial on stitching techniques for knits. Very, very practical. And, the wonky straight stitch is my winner! Thank you! 👏👏👏

You’re my last hope! Yesterday I was ready to give up sewing…entirely! Once again trying to sew jersey on my sewing machine was a failure….constant sewing on the spot despite a walking foot and a new ballpoint needle. The nightmare of trying to undo it….. However…after a little extra H.R.T and watching this I think I may give it one more go with interfacing…fingers crossed!
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would try some interfacing. You could also try some tear away stabilizer. This would help, but can be a pain to add and then tear away. Let me know how you get on, unfortunately some machines can like sewing jersey more than others. 😀

@@MadetoSew thank you for taking the time to reply. My husband bought me the machine, a Brother, for Xmas a few years ago, as a surprise. It’s always hated jersey. I have a feeling I will get a serger this year so want to do so research so I can point him in the right direction. I’m just about to look at your videos to see if you’ve anything on sergers. Thanks once again for your help and motivation.

@@stephaniepaterson6340 Hi Stephanie, what a lovely gift from your husband. 💜 I don't have many videos on sergers, they are on my to film list. I needed to purchase a domestic one to film. I now have a Bernina and a Babylock, both are good brands but can be pricier than others. I would also recommend looking at second hand, as sergers can be a bit more expensive than sewing machines but also a bit more temperamental (as in you really get what you pay for)! Hope this helps, Aneka x
@stephaniepaterson63403 жыл бұрын
@@MadetoSew I am learning that cheap and cheerful is not necessarily the right choice! I only have (time) limited use of my hands each day so I am happy (willing probably a better choice of word!) to pay more for a machine that will enable me to do more. Thanks again for your swift replies, you are incredibly helpful.
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
@@stephaniepaterson6340 Well the machines I have are Babylock Imagine (they are about 10 years old and still going strong), and a Bernina L460. I also want to get my hands on the new Bernina as this does overlocking and coverstitch, but I haven't been able to try it yet. I live in quite a remote area of Australia with no machine stores. Anyway that might give you an idea of some makes and models to look out for. Do consider if you want the ability to cover lock or cover stitch as well, this is the hem used on most jersey garments with the twin needle on the one side and the overlock style stitch on the wrong side. Some machines do both, however do look at what you have to do to change the machine to do the other stitch (years ago my dealer told me that it means the machine won't do either stitch as well!) However the Bernina machine I mentioned that I want to try is new, and therefore I am interested to see how it does it. Hope this helps and good luck! Aneka x

Hi Anne, I know I am really sorry about this. I was so close to re-filming it.... not sure why I didn't use a dark colour in the first place. I had a lot of the content that I filmed in the summer - and I was really so close to scrapping all the videos - which is why they have taken so long to upload. I re-film a few bits a couple of weeks ago and thought I had the lighting better. Anyway really sorry and I will do this next time. Aneka x

Thank you! I use the "wonky" straight stitch on my Bernina, since the stretch stitches don't perform as nicely. I don't have a serger and haven't been able to get the overcast stitches to look nice on the edges of the light/medium weight jersey fabric; the throat plate tries to eat the fabric. I need to try your tip on stabilizer and see if that helps for overcast, as it does for hemming.
@MadetoSew5 жыл бұрын
Yes I would try using some stabiliser and see if that helps (probably wash away, because it will be tricky to pull away neatly with that stitch). I don't think I have tried the overcast stitch on my machine on jersey fabric, because I have the overlocker. I will give it a go and let you know anything I find out. Aneka x

Hi Aneka, great video very informative. I recently discovered a lettuce hem which I did on some thin rib knits using my Serge, which probably saved me a headache hemming them. I never knew of the wonky straight stitch (great term!), will try that!

Thank you for your tutorial on sewing with jersey fabrics. I learned quite a few things. Unfortunately, I hemmed my little granddaughter's dress before I watched this tutorial. When I hemmed the dress using a twin needle, it started gathering and I had to literally pull and straighten it out, and the underside doesn't look right. I'm not going to hem it all over again, so I'm going to just leave it and hope for the best, but why do you think this happened? Do you think my stretch needle was dull? Also, when I pulled on my bobbin thread, it was very tight. I know now, after watching this video that I need to add some stabilizer to the hem the next time.
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
Hi Virginia, a couple of reasons why this could have happened, you may want to reduce the tension on your needle thread. But you would probably find with stabilizer and a walking foot you wouldn't have a problem. I don't think it will be a needle issue. Maybe do a test with stabilser and change the tension if you still need to? Let me know how it goes? Aneka

This is not a tutorial. This is table of contents video. I've watched 3 videos to find out how to do the blind stitch on a jersey on a sewing mashine and in the end I'm looking for a link to a fourth video. The part about the blind stitch promised in this video is 1 minute long. You made 4 videos by recycling the same set of video clips.
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maski, I am really sorry for this issue. It was supposed to be a series of videos where I could then link to the specific tutorial (the blind hem stitch that you are looking for). I filmed all of these last summer when I was travelling and for some reason the sound quality was horrendous, I wasn't happy with the finished result so I had to pull the other videos down. I am planning on re-doing all of the videos with a whole guide to sewing stretch / knitted fabrics. In the meantime I have this video which shows how to do a blind hem on a sewing machine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2nUqJh8bs-gfZo This is the same technique that you would use on jersey. You may find that your machine has a stretch blind hem stitch which you could use instead of the stitch I do in this tutorial BUT the process is the same (if you are working with a heavier knit like a double knit or a ponte this isn't an issue). You just need to use a ballpoint / jersey needle and I would recommend putting some stretch fusible behind the hem to support the fabric and make the stitches less visible. Let me know how it goes and feel free to email with questions (info@madetosew.com). REALLY sorry to disappoint you with this videos and not have all the attached tutorials. Aneka

@@MadetoSew yes, it did answer my question. I found out I don't like it for active wear :) ..... I don't have a serger and I like to tuck in the raw edge and make a top stitch on it. I just need to figure out how to retain the elasticity and not stiffen the jersey at the seams. looking forward for your new videos. stay well and take care. :) ... and wash your hands :)
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
@@maskichef Yes a blind hem is a bit bulky for active wear. I think your method of turning the hem and topstitching can work; you might just want to play with the stitch you use - I would recommend either a wonky straight stitch (using a zigzag with a small width 0.5mm) this will look like a straight stitch but allow a bit of stretch. Or go for a proper zigzag or 3-step zigzag like you would see around the edge of swimsuit? The other option is some binding in a stretch fabric too? Or even binding in the same jersey fabric? Thank you, and stay safe too. Aneka :-)) x
